If we make him chances he’ll score, and I’m sure he’ll have some nice link up play. He is physically shot which we also know. As an option up front he could be handy, especially when we are going to be passing around against low blocks the whole season

Vardy won the golden boot at Ings's age. Ings last season scored 2 goals in 23 games in the championship.

You can't compare the career trajectories of the two. Vardy is arguably the greatest post 30s striker in the history of the English league.

We don't need Ings to be anywhere near as good as Vardy though do we?

Just because Ings only scored 2 in 23 for Sheff United last season bears no real bearing on how he will perform for us in league one.

Sheff Utd were a bit of a mess, with the appointment and sacking of Selles and then the rehiring of Wilder.

The role he will be asked to play for us could be very different to the one he was expected to play last season. What I do see with Ings is a very good role model and mentor to our younger players such as Evans, Otchere and Hutchinson which could be massive in their development.

err what? Yes it does. Sheffield United were a mess and we are too. He’s not scored more than 10 in a season for more than 5 years. Plus he’s a year older this year.

Vardy had an absolute horror season the year we got relegated under Brendan IIRC scored 3 goals or something like that, following season was excellent in the championship and the year after that had a relatively decent return in a side relegated from the prem.

In reckon Ings if he has a decent run of games will bag a minimum of 10 this season.

Two of the top scorers in L1 last year, Ashley Fletcher and Jack Marriott, and their few seasons before…

Ings could be good or crap, we don’t know, but League one is a massive step down from the Championship

did you just compare Danny Ings to Jamie Vardy?

besides, Sheffield United finished 13th last year, not quite the car crash of a season we had when we were relegated that year.  Plus vardy was in the prem and Ings played in the champ.

I think it's still a bit unclear on what we're trying to do this season, develop a younger team and see how we go in the League or whether we're trying to get promoted. If we're bringing in the likes of Ings, McCarthy etc to help develop the young players in the squad, then great but if we're signing them to be active members of the playing staff, then that's not so great.

Personally, I don't believe we have a chance of promotion given Russell Martins record, so we may as well go down the development route!

Yes I did compare in the view a player can have a poor season, or be impacted by behind the scenes turmoil. Yes United had a better season than we did but they were a car crash until Wilder somewhat stabilised them from November onwards.

I do think some experienced heads to go along with a young team isn’t a bad idea

Ings at 33 in L1 could be a coup as a bit part player

He’s free as well which adds I guess nicely to the package

So you’re on about a relative anomaly for Vardy then, Ings hasn’t scored more than 3 in a season for 5 seasons. We know exactly what we’re getting. He should be accompanying a striker like Tolaj to give guidance and step in when they’re short of form and not our main striker

Free signings also come with issues, higher wages and agent fees which is problematic when you are bound by being allowed to spend 65% of your turnover including managers and staff

I think all players signed come with potential issues tbf

it’s about risk management I guess, of course your right in what you say, but I’d say in the grand scheme of things for where we are at, Ings nonetheless ain’t a bad punt

So why didn’t he score more goals from November onwards? That’s about 3/4 of a season!

A lot of Ings’ game relied on his quick movement over 5/10 yards (prior to his big injury at Liverpool, during his time at Burnley it was over a longer distance), now he’s lost that he hasn’t really got much threat.

He’ll get marked out of most games. We’ll face a lot of low blocks this season and I don’t think a shorter, slow striker is key to breaking them down in League 1. You need a physical focal point, really.

If he’s used as a sub or plays off another forward with that profile then maybe his finishing ability will be useful, but I don’t want to see him leading the line as a lone striker from the start this season.

Possibly mate, but I think with Martin ball, the relentless pressure does create opportunities. I think he just needs a goal scorer to tap things home and that could be Ings.  All comes down to how we build those openings but if we’re getting the ball in the box often someone with good instinct could do well. That’s what I’m hoping at least

How many games has he played at L1 level? It’s a massive drop off in quality between the two leagues

29 games, 8 goals for Bournemouth in 2010/11

All dependent on how many teams are trying to sign him, if nobody else is interested then his wage and agent fees aren’t going to be significant.

He has dropped to league one, after being on over 100k at West Ham and nearly on 40k at Sheffield united. 20k plus is significant for league one

Are any other teams offering him £20k?

If nobody else is interested for him then offer £5k and tell the agent to take his cut from that.

It’s better than **** all.
