Leicester City takeover: What we know about £200m value and administration rumours
Football finance expert Dan Plumley assesses the Foxes' future

September 18,
LEICESTER, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 5:
Leicester City are a League One club eyeing a Premier League-level sale
Michael Hincks Sports writer

Leicester City’s owners must accept the reality that their 2016 fairytale counts for nothing when looking to sell the club.

King Power are actively seeking to end their 16-year reign of the Foxes, with investment bank Citigroup overseeing the sale.

A valuation of more than £200m had been reported in August, taking into account Leicester’s major assets, including their stadium and world-class training complex.

However, King Power chief executive and Leicester chair Aiyawatt “Top” Srivaddhanaprabha would be fortunate to receive anything close to that figure, with the club’s Premier League triumph a decade ago carrying far less weight than the fact they are currently a League One outfit.

“The valuation is on the high side,” Loughborough University sports finance expert Dan Plumley tells The i Paper.

“It’s probably more of a top-end Championship club valuation rather than their current position in League One. Revenue will have dropped compared to the Premier League days.

“However, they will be factoring in other assets that they own. The training complex is huge so there is some value in that.”

What is a fair price for Leicester City?
Plumley points towards Sheffield United’s £105m sale as a helpful comparison, although the Blades were top of the Championship at the time of their takeover in December 2024.

Leicester meanwhile are 13th in League One after six games, having suffered the ignominy of double relegation amid financial breaches and supporter protests.

The Foxes naturally hope to bounce back, but Plumley estimates potential buyers may chase a sale closer to £100m given the club’s current standing.

“It’s really tricky,” Plumley says. “I would assume the revenue would have dropped to around £80-100m. If you work off that and a small multiplier plus the training ground and assets, I think you could get to a rough estimate of around £130-150m.

“But if I’m the buyer, I’m probably trying to push that down to around £100m. All are estimates, though, and a lot of it is based on ‘feel’ and comparative sales like Sheffield United.”

Debts and administration threats
On Tuesday, Leicester confirmed they had converted £8.5m of owner debts into new shares. King Power also wrote off £194m three years ago.

“The owners have always supported the club financially and have written off debt in the past to help them financially,” Plumley adds.

Meanwhile, rumours of an administration threat seem far-fetched for now. The club were deducted six points last season for financial breaches, but a careful summer transfer window alluded to the Foxes addressing losses in previous years.

They sold Jeremy Monga to Manchester City for £10m in July, and spent just £4.7m on players compared to the £43m they made in sales.

“On administration, that comes down to cash to keep going day to day. We can’t see that from the outside looking in so it’s tough to say how bad it is,” Plumley says.

“Expect them to continue pushing to sell the club though, that’s clear. And probably some more player departures in the winter window if the club is still in limbo sale-wise.”

Who wants to buy Leicester?
Currently only Scottish-Indian businessman Neil Lal has publicly expressed his interest, telling Talksport his Bharat Consortium Group consortium – featuring three other investors – have made an offer.

“We are all wealthy businessmen,” Lal said last week. “We have contacted the board directly, which saves time. It is now a waiting game.”

On the reported £200m valuation, Lal added: “Leicester is valued as a successful Championship club, and yet it’s in League One. So, for me, the valuation is over the top.

“If, God forbid, Leicester ever drops down to League Two, financially, it’s Armageddon. It really is… My fear is if this [form] continues for the long term, over the next two to four months, and Leicester’s not playing well in the league, then unfortunately, we are going to have to review the situation and possibly walk. And I don’t want to do that. The foundations are there, but the problem is the financial stability is not.”

Daniel Storey: Leicester City ignored their fans. Now they are paying the price

Michael Hincks: Leicester City and the great £34m reset

The i Paper understands that no formal engagements have taken place with the club despite the reported expressions of interest.

Reports of Saudi boxing mogul Turki Al-Sheikh being sounded out, just weeks after he pulled out of a takeover of Derby County, also remain rumour for now.

The i Paper contacted both Leicester City and Citigroup for comment.

So that’s saying we asked him if he wanted us. And he’d get approval quick. Nothing about him being slightly interested lol

I think some of you don't realise how long takeovers take, its not like a transfer it can take months if not over a year, depending on how many bidders there are.

The next step will be someone getting preferred bidder status and going through the due diligence process, that's if any acceptable bids were received

It could go down to the wire and a preferred bidder pulls out at the final hurdle and the whole process starts again, the whole process of selling a business is fragile and unpredictable.

Heard some reassuring stuff. The challenge will be the current finances - for some reason it appears the club still think we're a championship club with some of the contracts being handed out....

That was obvious with the signings of Chaplin, Cullen, Riis, Burns and Kangasniemi.

Kangasniemi being signed for well over £2m makes him the 2nd most expensive signing in League 1 this season and he's a bench player.

Reassuring in what sense? re the new owners, or that this season is not promotion or bust (i.e. administration)?

Why it this surprising to anyone? When we were relegated from the PL we gave PL contracts out in the Championship. Shock horror we do the same with the same people and structures in place after being relegated again.

That doesn't sound reassuring!

I swear I read quotes from Top last week in the Mercury that suggested he doesn't have any interest in selling up anytime soon.

The family might want rid but Top doesn't seem too keen on the idea. While equally he doesn't seem too keen on running the football club. It's an odd one.

Newcastle's PIF takeover began in April 2020 and wasn't finalised until October 2021.

We're miles away yet.

You move at the pace of the bidder - so timelines in that sense are meaningless

Talk of him being the new Fofana? If we get anything close to £70m then I'd have thought this was a fantastic piece of business.

You read and believe The Mercury?

Anything you say in the future will now be ignored.

The numbers are not huge and if an interested bidder is really loaded then they may be less bothered about losing 40/50 m on valuation v reality

( as long as that doesn’t hamstring our financials moving forwards)

but you’d assume that the owners may well be less than forthcoming with data which will delay even a buyer as I describe

Interesting article in the mail

about Burnley and how they are saddled with debt by the latest owners, shirt sponsor being pulled last minute.
Poor fees for players etc

Fans worried they could be the next Leicester

so many shit bag owners out there

“So much of it, though, comes back to the money. The £142m debt from the most recent accounts for the 2024-25 promotion season, the interest on bank loans of up to 12 per cent, the £36m of net interest payments over the last five seasons when there was none before the takeover.

The £9.5m taken in ‘management fees’ under the current ownership, ones that jumped from £1.5m to £4m after relegation. The transfer debt of £95m that was just £3m four years ago and takes the club’s total gross debt to nearly a quarter of a billion. The near £40m sale of incoming transfer fees to London-based firm Fasanara Capital. And why Velocity Capital, ALK’s investment arm, still owes the football club around £81m.

Under the previous ownership, made up of local businessmen, Burnley were famously debt-free, cash rich, and one of the most profitable clubs in Premier League history. Dyche worked miracles on a budget as he established the Clarets in the Premier League and took them into Europe.

Now, according to respected finance blog Swiss Ramble, Burnley’s external debt of £142m last year was the fourth highest in England behind only Tottenham and Everton, who have built new stadiums, and the Glazers’ United”

The concerns are that the club has £75m of short-terms loans, £30m of long-term loans, has sold players but has sold the transfer instalments from the sales and owes £94m in unpaid transfer fees. Under those circumstances they will struggle to borrow more and, if they do, will have to pay punitive interest rates.

‘It therefore could come down to whether or not Alan Pace has (a) the cash and (b) the desire to provide funding himself.’

All sounds familiar

Hmm, doesn't this contradict the view in the fan base that nothing really matters anymore because of the title win? Why not pay a minimal salary and small transfer fees and just roll along with a low cost base?

Asked Chat GPT regarding any news of the takeover to go through the papers etc this is what it came up with, regarding potential deals buyers etc asking if the Boehly rumours have any substance ?!

— there is fresh LCFC takeover chatter tonight (21 September), but the important distinction is between what’s confirmed and what’s speculation.

The strongest confirmed fact remains that King Power is exploring a sale and Citigroup has been engaged in the process. Sky Sports reported that the sales material valued the package at about £224m, including the stadium, Seagrave training facilities, the men’s and women’s teams and OH Leuven.

The biggest development today is a report quoting former Everton CEO Keith Wyness suggesting King Power may ultimately have to accept something nearer £100m rather than the £200m+ valuation. Importantly, that is Wyness’s assessment, not evidence that a £100m bid has been accepted. He also believes a credible buyer could be operating quietly rather than appearing in the press.

There’s also continuing interest around Neil Lal’s Bharat Consortium. Lal has publicly said his group has made an offer and has been communicating directly with the club rather than going through Citigroup.

The Turki Alalshikh story is still alive too. Recent reporting says he has been discussed in connection with Leicester following the collapse of his Derby County move, but I haven’t found reliable confirmation that he has submitted an LCFC bid. The latest claims about how quickly he could obtain EFL approval are commentary from Wyness, rather than confirmation of a transaction.

And there’s one particularly interesting piece of official LCFC information: on 15 September Leicester announced that £8.5m of King Power funding had been converted into equity. The club specifically stated that there had been “no change to the ownership structure” and the Srivaddhanaprabha family remained the ultimate beneficial owners at that point.

So, as of tonight: the sale process appears real, but I can’t verify that a buyer has been selected, exclusivity granted, or a sale agreed. The rumours about a less-publicised American investor are worth watching, but at present I’m not seeing sufficiently strong independent reporting to treat that as established fact.

And on the Todd Boehly angle we’ve been watching, I still haven’t found solid evidence connecting him personally to an LCFC bid. The Citigroup connection by itself isn’t evidence of Boehly involvement

Thanks mate this is great. Can you ask ChatGPT if we'll get promoted this season too and if Martin will be sacked please?

Nah it said we’re Fuched under Russell Martin but Flop is far too stupid to see he’s not the right manager for us which we all said before he was appointed even Chat GPT laughed that Flop appointed him !
