If it wasn't for last week this would be a great win. They'll be up there this season. Our side should get better as season goes on, got to understand the tossers from years past have left who let the club down. This lot are new or young academy lads. Our away support class it's just KP being a library don't help

Looking at the very brief highlights on tv last night, it came across that we were lucky to win. They hit the bar twice, two disallowed goals, (should they have been?), a couple of good saves. Is that fair, or was it biased highlights?

I’ve just watched the highlights back, how can professional footballers not pick up players from corners?

Backing off, when the opposition are attacking?

This is very basic stuff that they should know.

One of Rodgers Prem signings, is still stinking the place out.

Very lucky win, I didn't realise Stockport had 2 goals disallowed, which could easily have been allowed on another day.

 

We still don't work hard enough as a team stopping crosses. Stockport created so many chances from them. 

 

We need the wins for any potential buyers to remain interested, but it's a painful experience waiting for the club to be sold.

Dysfunctional beyond belief. 
 

The style isn’t a fair criticism of Martin yesterday. Stockport allowed us to play a bit. Actually think they were very naive first half. It was the lack of subs and how he insisted on a press which was failing every single time for 20 minutes. We looked infinitely better when the subs came on and the front three stopped pressing mad. 
 

Worringly our fitness fell off a cliff. 
 

Louis Page and Will Alves on the goals yesterday, simply superb. Riis and Lundstrum exactly what we need from senior pros. Great finish by Cullen and pressing for our fourth but he’s soft isn’t he.
 

Souttar an absolute shambles. Bullied by Wootton. While Luke Thomas does Luke Thomas things. McCarthy made two saves as good as any in the same game as making two huge errors

Just to add I think under Martin it’s where we pick points. Clubs that want to play football. Barnsley will press like hell next weekend which might suit us if we can get around cos we will constantly be in 4 on 4 transition against them

I’ve watched the extended highlights….. 

 

as an attacking force, were the best in the league, comfortably, the first goal was beautiful, and subsequently all goals after had elements of good play in them….. 

 

The huge issues are, defending, fitness and naturally then, Russell….

 

Our defending is lazy, we concede some horrible goals, stuff you would see on a Sunday morning, so many basic errors…. It’s clear there’s little focus on defensive play, the fact Thomas keeps his place just blown my mind, when he the worst of the lot, but how can we concede such poor goals with the defenders we have at this level? 
 

The keeper needs changing and Thomas needs just taking to the middle of the ocean, and dumping….. that’s at least a start.

They obviously threatened on set pieces, but also, and I realise everyone sees him as a weakness, but every one of their attacks seem to either come from being one on one with Thomas down the left (like Diamonds goal), or a cross from their right focused on getting the ball deep to where Thomas was defending (Wooton’s goal).

 

Hes such a weakness - and if the thought is McFarlane can only go forward and not defend then Aluko needs to be given a shot

I believe Martin discussed Alves playing as a “wingback” today, so it’s possible that what was drawn up on the tactics board today was a 3-5-2 rather than his accustomed 4-1-4-1.

 

And I get why this was done; he wanted to match up man-to-man defensively with Stockport’s 3-4-3, whilst maintaining an extra body in midfield when on the offensive.

 

Notice, Stockport had no holding midfielder themselves, so that 3 v 2 central midfield match up when attacking was very advantageous for us -  especially for Page, who found pockets of time and space to lay on two goals.

 

But Martin clearly changed things after Stockport came back into the game.

 

He’s instructed Page and Lundstram to simply sit to protect the centre backs; we became a mid to low block; he brought on Burns for Cullen to better secure the left hand side that Stockport were getting some joy down.

 

And we conceded possession to ensure a result - we were at mid 60’s at one point, so to end up at 49% possession indicates a clear shift in approach.

 

Mean, yes defensively we were not good for structural reasons; but equally, in an attacking sense we looked incredibly dangerous - it was only a good save that prevented us scoring from all of our 5 shots on target, suggesting the strength of our chance creation was a lot better than in previous games.

Defending and fitness have been huge issues for years and i’m surprised we’ve not sorted it.

 

If we at least fixed fitness a lot more would follow and we wouldnt be as in the mire as we are. 
 

At this point the whole sports science and fitness teams need binning, a complete reset they’ve been stealing a living for years.

All great points but Martin was too passive and didn’t make the subs soon enough IMO.

 

Lucky is the best word to describe yesterday.
