Ghost Story (1981).

ghost-story4.jpeg

Underrated. A little supernatural horror gem.

One of the last movies for Fred Astaire, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and John Houseman – and the last one for Melvyn Douglas, who died before its release.

Miguel Fernandes is very good in it, too.

Also features Alice Krige (later on achieving fame as the Borg Queen in Star Trek: First Contact).

A Man For All Seasons currently on BBC I player. Brilliant acting and filmed. Can see why it won so many Oscars in 1966. Interesting to read most of the actors took a pay cut to keep within budget

Just watched Saipan, it was interesting i'm not sure its strong enough story or event worthy of a feature length movie for the big screen. Perhaps better suited as Netflix or amazon drama. Performances from both actors was very impressive. If your thinking of watching Saipan.. wait for when its released or dvd or on stream. Its not worth the price of the cinema. That's not saying its a bad movie. There is some really good intense senses between Keane and McCarthy. The movie is not quite on the same level as Damned United but still worth watching. 6.5/10.

After reading about the success of Chinese animation Ne Zha 2 being the highest grossing animated film of all time I decided to give the two films a try.

They were ok, your classic "good vs evil" and "you can choose to be who you want to be no matter what your origins" tales, but can't say they were that interesting to me really. I guess it's a cultural thing and maybe the 16th century book that they are based on is taught in schools or something.

This is pretty much exactly what I was expecting. Will stick it on at home in 6 months!

Weird decision to release to theatres, considering they released it alongside other bigger blockbusters like 28 Years Later and Avatar. Not exactly going to make that much money.

Watched Hamnet a couple of weeks ago an and watching Sinners tonight mainly based on the Oscar nominations.

Maybe it’s because horror isn’t really my thing but to me Hamnet’s on a level above.

North by Northwest.

Just perfect.

And Eva Marie Saint looks absolutely gorgeous. Going on 102 this year!

Yes. Definitely one of the best Hitchcock films. 2 British born stars with distinctive voices opposite each other in Cary Grant and James Mason. Totally agree about Eva Marie Saint. Great to know still with us

Don’t watch many films, but watched Life of Chuck the other day and thought it was great. Really clever concept I thought.

Two very contrasting films over the weekend.

28 Years Bone Temple on Friday, which following the last installment that I found pretty meh was actually really good fun. Gore definitely ramped up and just about stayed on the right line in the silly fun vs plain ridiculous at times.

Then Lars and the Real Girl last night. Thought it was a really beautiful gentle telling of healing, love and compassion which once I'd got over the initial premise I actually really enjoyed.

I heard somebody from the industry say the two movies were meant to be one. That'd be the better artistic choice, imo.

It appears as if they wanted to profit more financially and exploit the series' standing with two separate films.

I mean they literally follow each other in terms of storyline so could’ve been one with some scene cuts and longing running time. It’s a trilogy though so not sure how that would work. Either way not hard to believe dollars over art was the deciding factor!

Finally got around to watching Sinners yesterday.  Was good but 16 Oscar nominations good, definitely not.

I had a similar reaction to Hamnet. Haven't seen Sinners yet.

I did see Sentimental Value, which was a much more affecting film for me - more authentic and more nuanced. Glad to see it's also got a lot of Oscar nominations.

I personally thought Sinners was superb and I enjoyed it more than Weapons (the other big horror last year, infact i'd put Bring Her Back above Weapons actually)

Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere

My biggest issue was that I just couldn't see Jeremy Allen White as the Boss. Don't get me wrong, he did a good job, but I just couldn't get past seeing the chef from The Bear doing a Springsteen impression.

The movie itself was good. I'm not an expert on Bruce, so it was interesting to see that particular time in his career and the choices he made.

I much preferred the Bob Dylan one with Chalamet.

Really enjoyed Sinners.

Didn't like Hamnet - beautifully filmed but I found it pretty boring. Could hardly hear what was being said most of the time and when you could, the actors 'over-acted'. Found it all a bit hammy.
