He's not bald Posted 13 August 2007 Posted 13 August 2007 Ah come on he'll be good for us, we'll have more strikers than we know what to do with and he is old and fat but he should give us something different, that being footballing abilty. Do you think Swan Vesta will want to sponsor us now weve got all these strikers?
Ric Flair Posted 13 August 2007 Posted 13 August 2007 I wonder whether Hasslehoff will be signed in time for the trip up naaaaarth? I would have thought the team will be setting off very early tomorrow, so as regards to a press conference would they do it tomorrow or tonight?
Fez of Mahrez Posted 13 August 2007 Posted 13 August 2007 I'm not that excited by this news like some other people have said. We have strikers at the club already who have the ability to score enough goals to take us close to the play-offs, if not in them. The least worrying aspect of Saturday was our strikers imo. I was more worried by the midfield and certain defensive frailties. We've spent money on Campbell who scored goals at this level last season and we've got Hume who scored goals in a poor team last season. I'm more concerned about who else is going to pop up with goals seeing as Kishishev and Clemence both looked less than attacking on Saturday and we were playing with a right winger on the left and a central midfielder on the right. I share your concerns about goals from midfield but I trust Allen (and Mandaric) to address that. We lacked a strong goalscoring forward on Saturday. MDV is not a natural goalscorer in my book. None of our strikers have the experience of scoring goals on a regular basis at the top level like Hasselbaink. If he's fit and motivated he will be better than anyone else at the club in my opinion. If...
Jonbluefox9 Posted 13 August 2007 Posted 13 August 2007 You raise some good points, but by the looks of things, If we aren't winning by about 55 minutes, Allen will throw more strikers on anyway, it's going to be a bizarre old season.Enjoy it. I won't mind that, just a bit worried that the first of these '3 or 4' signings still to come is going to be a striker. In my pecking order of what we need to improve our starting 11 I would put almost every other position ahead of the strking berths. Having said that, we need someone better than de Vries if Allen is determined to play with a big man because balls were drifting over his head and easily into the arms of the Blackpool 'keeper towards the end of Saturday's match.

breadandcheese Posted 13 August 2007 Posted 13 August 2007 It's basically a big gamble. The big worry for me is that he isn't an Allen signing so we potentially end up with a poor man's Shevchenko situation, but I definitely think it's worth a gamble because he brings a steely quality that we don't have upfront. Still think Jonbluefox is right, that the problem is supply from the midfield so Murphy or another player are needed. I don't yet buy into this Kaebi prince of persia hype yet.
breadandcheese Posted 13 August 2007 Posted 13 August 2007 Where does everyone get this idea that Hasselbaink is a good targetman? I've always thought of him as a player who plays best facing the goal, rather than back to goal, holding the ball up or winning flick-ons.

Agreed, but De Vries isn't a problem when the goal kicks aren't falling vertically from the air and when the ball is aimed towards his feet or chest and not his head. You have to play to strengths and our defenders weren't playing to his strengths. Theres no point in trying to fit players into a system if they don't suit it.

Me neither, although i think in my case its because - HE HASN'T FU**ING PLAYED! Whats the problem with some people, moaning just for the sake of it.

Dr The Singh Posted 13 August 2007 Posted 13 August 2007 Do not confuse caution or reserving judgement with moaning. Yes, cus I just like to moan!!
MC Prussian Posted 13 August 2007 Posted 13 August 2007 Do not confuse caution or reserving judgement with moaning. We're all pretty much very good at it!
Babylon Posted 13 August 2007 Posted 13 August 2007 According to some MA is not a happy bunny about this.
Geo V Posted 13 August 2007 Posted 13 August 2007 There are too many pages to go through so I wont JFH is a superb finisher and always has been! He looked quite useful at times last season but I think he`ll find it a hell of a lot easier at this level and will be a bigger signing for us that Robbie Fowler will be for Cardiff. He is a moany old sod and if DJ is as bad a moaner as everyone makes out, we could have the most miserable striking pair in the country . I can see that working as a partnership to be honest and although it pains me to actually mutter these words, I think we should drop Hume on to the bench to see how they do. I am convinced Matty Fryatts career will be continued away from here after we complete this signing and hopefully that newly found cash will help us bring in a quality attacking midfielder.

I don't know how Allen views de Vries' role in the team? It sounds like Allen wasn't approving the long balls. He said he wanted to see us knock it about a bit more and not be so direct. Like you say, if we're going to use de Vires we have to play to his strengths because he looks like a fish out of water when trying to win high searching balls.
Simi Posted 13 August 2007 Posted 13 August 2007 According to some MA is not a happy bunny about this. I've heard that as well. I can't see the thinking behind this signing when surely they know about the left side issue.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 13 August 2007 Posted 13 August 2007 According to some MA is not a happy bunny about this. Blah blah blah. Just another tool who thinks he'd be a good manager for us. Brian Little knows what he's doing.
Geo V Posted 13 August 2007 Posted 13 August 2007 2nd biggest arse in football. I thought he had that title all on his own. I hope we can get the lad some shorts that fit.
MC Prussian Posted 13 August 2007 Posted 13 August 2007 According to some MA is not a happy bunny about this. This has "Martin Keown" written all over it.
Ric Flair Posted 13 August 2007 Posted 13 August 2007 This has "Martin Keown" written all over it. I think you might be right.
teblin Posted 13 August 2007 Posted 13 August 2007 This has "Martin Keown" written all over it. Not so sure myself. Think Les Ferdinand. But Jimmy is younger,
Dames Posted 13 August 2007 Posted 13 August 2007 So where does this leave Fryatt and Cort ? Clearly they won't be getting much of a look in. I'd rather have Fryatt who has the potential for us to get a few good seasons out of him. While Hasselbaink is looking for one last pay cheque and we probably will only get half a good season out of him.
Ric Flair Posted 13 August 2007 Posted 13 August 2007 If the rumours are true that Allen isn't happy about Hasselbaink signing, then this spells trouble. I don't recall many occasions when a manager has players thrust upon him and it leading to a happy outcome. Let's hope Allen is either won round by the idea or that the rumours are false and that JFH comes here and does the business.
