Nice win for Andy, tough first round too… good to see him look so composed. I still hold out, he might have one more slam in him crazy for sure..

Not sure on the Slam, v hard for 7 5 set matches, but maybe make the last 16 or quarters & it looked a good game, Cerundolo looked a decent player.  And for once a 3 set match when he needed it, he also takes 24th place in the draw.

Wish all the Brits well in the US, lets hope it was as positive as Wimbledon.  2 weeks great evening sport coming up.

Raducanu out in the first round of her defence.

Not been a great year for her, but then Cornet isn't the kind of first round opponent you'd want when struggling for consistency either.

Probably one of the worse non seeds to get !

Unfortunately means Emma will lose loads of rankings points carried over from last year .

Disappointing for Emma but an unsurprising loss imo.

First round against Cornet as defending champion on a show court, Cornet thrives on matchups like that.

The losses for Halep & Rybakina were far more shocking in R1.

Raducanu being out in the first round, to nobody's surprise. How on earth did she win the US open? It seems a total aberration given how poor she has been since.

I actually think the support group, primarily her father totally messed it up.

They should have retained the coach post the US last year, until they found a long term coach, they got rid immediately and then she has had a number of very short term coaches, she has been riddled with injuries, they shouldn't have more or less taken the rest of the year off.  She should have played a few tournaments towards the end of the year and used the high ranking to her advantage, that has been totally wasted.

She now has to qualify again (though presume she'll get wildcards as an ex Grand Slam champion) but that doesn't mean she won't draw a top seed every time.  Get herself properly fit and strong and get a coach that will last at least a year and just get some continuity.  Get a bit of time and support with Andy Murray to understand what desire, drive and application tbf if she's really bothered as she has earned £17.9M?

Her game lacks power though which might be a problem, Garcia outhit her at Wimbledon easily.  Hope she makes a fist of it over the next year and starts climbing, it would be such a waste if this was primarily it.

I don't believe it was just their choice - my understanding is the coach she had stepped in purely as a temporary measure as he didn't want to commit to travelling on the tour. Fingers crossed it works with Dmitry anyhow.

Despite dropping all those points, she's still our number 1 women's player, and should still automatically qualify for most tournaments. Considering it's her first full year on tour, she's in a fairly healthy position.

Fair and hope so, seems a good kid but the caveat being if Harriet Dart wins another match she will go no 1 I believe and many of the draws are 32/56/64 etc. so not sure how a mid 80's ranking stacks up to that. but good luck to her and lets hope she generates a good upwards trajectory like Jack Draper has.  World no 110 or something at the start of the grass court season, up to low 50's with Felix AA to play, he was 265 at beginning of year.  She has a run to the last 16 at Wimbledon, a US Open title and wins against S Williams & Azarenka to draw on, that should help.

When it's the smaller tournaments (e.g. 32 man draw), there will be multiple tournaments going at once and some players who will give them a miss altogether so she won't have an issue. It's just the 1000 pointers she will struggle to automatically qualify for, but she doesn't really have that many points to defend post US Open so hopefully her ranking will keep steadily going up.

Jack Draper has benefited so much from having the focus on Emma. He's a year older than her though, and has been full time on the tour a fair bit longer. Emma is progressing at a faster pace than would normally be expected considering she just left school last year, it's just all been thrown into confusion because of the huge slam win!

The stars just align sometimes, too much too quickly when you’re already a young player to replicate the heights again. She at least took the trophy I guess

Believe she’s going down to 80 something which will get you in most tournaments bar the 1000s

And probably more like her actual level, for now at least, big upset her winning last year but upsets are far more common in the Women’s game.

She won because she had zero pressure on her shoulders and played to her best.  Since then she has had multiple injuries, coaches, lucrative commercial distractions and the pressure of trying to replicate that as a grand slam holder.  Give her some stability and time to work her way back to a place where she can play to her best.

Jack Draper! Sounds like a fantastic performance beating FAA. Looking forward to catching up on it later

Making a strong impression in the last few weeks.

Probably got unnoticed in the media for now.

Draper forced to retire hurt. Unfortunate.

The guy definitely has potential.

He would have won that, had turned the match around but yes injury stopped him from being able to do so such a shame

Gods, I miss the days where we could reliably expect a Brit guy (Murray, naturally) to make the latter stages of a Slam with consistency.

Edit: I looked it up, there was a 6 year time period (2011 to 2016) where he only lost before the QF once.

The mens draw is incredibly wide open, you could make a case for all 8 winning it from here. I think Rublev at 16’s is good value personally but Ruud and Alcaraz will see it as a good chance to get their first under their belts.
