Sooper Steve's shin Posted 14 August 2008 Posted 14 August 2008 Personally, I might be tempted to stick Kish in at left-back as a stop-gap if we don't get someone in on loan this week. It would minimise changes (Gilbert is developing a partnership with Max on the right) and he's a reasonably experienced pro who should be able to adapt for a game or two. It might also help Tunchev settle if he has his Bulgarian mate playing right next to him.

But whether he's ready for a senior debut I don't know. Trouble is, without knowing if any of the new signings can play left-back, I just don't see an obvious solution. Dyer at the back and Porter in front might work because Porter would cover back and help Dyer quite responsibly. I could make one eccentric suggestion but it really is radical and only made as a one-match option simply through observation of players abilities. We could play Gradel at left-back. We know he's comfortable on the left and he's quite tall. We could play high up the pitch because no-one will outsprint the lad. He competes for every ball and even if he got beaten his recovery is so quick he'd likely get in another challenge. It would scupper Stockport's plans to deal with him. Adams could play on the right and we'd have an extra attacker if things go wrong and we need to move out of the more defensive formation I feel sure Pearson will adopt away from home. It's just a thought and one that will doubtless be greeted with some derision. My biggest concern is the loss of his attacking potential. But defensively he's the most improved player I've seen at City and I don't think anyone would make a fool of him cos, apart from his speed, he shields the ball well, he's brave and seems very strong. If Pearson knows that, say, Dyer can play left back or even Gilbert then fair enough but perhaps the Gradel idea is worth considering because we have far more options up front than we ever have at full-back. .

But nothing I've seen suggests Dyer's as combative as Gradel who just seems like a man with a mission to me.

Anyway the point was that he's not tall, which at roughly 5,7 he certainly isn't!

The only thing that would worry me would be Gradel's tackling; a crunching tackle on the wing is one thing, with much less risk, but if the ball goes over the top of him and flies in he could get himself sent off, or give away a penalty. For that reason I think he'd have to be quite restrained which would probably reduce his attacking threat. Plus taking into account the fact that despite having some of the attributes of a left back, it's nothing without the experience. Besides, he's a capable left winger beceause hes comfortable cutting onto his right foot. At left back he'd need to be able to use his left foot. It's not a terrible idea but I hope it won't come to that.

knowitall Posted 14 August 2008 Posted 14 August 2008 Berner is still not fit so you can count him out. I can not see a new player coming in and starting the match. A change of formation is not what NP is noted for. Luke O'Neil is a right back who likes to get forward. Which would help Max. Luke is also ahead of Lee Cox because he is faster. Lloyd Dyer was a possible left back for the Palace game, However NP went for what he thought would be his main team.

Unabomber Posted 14 August 2008 Posted 14 August 2008 Really tricky who to play at LB, I wouldn't want to ruin the combination of Gilbert and Gradel as it is becoming clear that they are really starting to understand each others game, and Gilbert is always looking to play the ball to to Gradel as soon as he gets it. However if we have players who are more comfortable playing at RB it may mean that Gilbert will have to switch.
