An "evil" father who welded his badly-injured son into a cage and threatened to set him on fire, has been jailed.

Kevin Clifford (51) and accomplice John Cope (47) were both jailed for 16 years yesterday after a jury at Leicester Crown Court convicted them of false imprisonment and inflicting grievous bodily harm.

    Kevin Clifford

Their victim, Gary Clifford, 29, suffered multiple broken bones and lash marks having been relentlessly beaten with a baseball bat, a pipe and an industrial hose.

He was smashed in the face by his hammer-wielding uncle, Patrick Clifford, also known as Ben, who was jailed for 12 years.

Kevin Clifford, of Ashby Road, Moira, lured his son to a workshop at the back of his home, with the offer of work, to mete out the barbaric punishment.

During the attack the victim was welded into the cage and had brake fluid sprayed into his face and was threatened with being set on fire.

Prosecutor James Thomas said the assault was "horrendous, amounting to torture".

The victim was suspected of stealing gold jewellery from his stepmother, Kevin Clifford's wife, on April 3 last year.

The victim's father knew Cope was looking for Gary following a fall-out and recruited him. He also recruited his brother, Patrick (44), of Cherry Tree Court, Moira, who pleaded guilty to the attack and false imprisonment charges.

Another man, Desmond Marsh (35), of Meadow Lane, Newhall, Swadlincote, who played no part in the violence, admitted false imprisonment and was jailed for 40 months.

Marsh had driven Gary's "almost dead and broken body" from the workshop, inside a builder's sack, and dumped him outside the Traveller's Rest pub, in Church Gresley, where he was found by a shocked neighbour.

Sentencing at Leicester Crown Court, Judge Ebraham Mooncey said: "Experienced ambulance officers said the injuries were the most extreme they'd ever seen. You don't often hear of someone being hung upside down from a forklift truck and caged. He had a sack put over his head and a cable around his neck. Patrick and Kevin Clifford gave him a beating as he hung upside down and he received many injuries, from the waist to his head, at the hands of his father.

"It was a systematic beating of the most vile kind,'' the Judge said. "The father of the victim stood calmly in court when he gave evidence, telling lie upon lie to the jury, saying he wasn't involved in this enterprise."

He said Cope, of Market Street, Church Gresley, turned up after Gary was welded into the cage. When he was taken out, Cope laughed as he smashed Gary's kneecaps into several pieces.

Judge Mooncey told Kevin Clifford: "It's hard to fathom how a father, his own flesh and blood, could to something like this. I watched you giving evidence and I take the view you're an evil man and you shouldn't have done that to your son, whatever he'd done.

"The victim was subjected to gratuitous degradation."

Gary's injuries included a broken arm, two leg breaks, a fractured foot, multiple cuts and bruises . He was in hospital for four months and is still on pain-killing medication.

Kevin Clifford and Cope had denied the charges, claiming they played no part in the violence.

Piers Wauchope, for Kevin Clifford, said after the verdicts that Clifford was concerned for the welfare of his wife, who suffered from ill health.

Steven Newcombe, for Cope said his long-term partner and parents were in court to support him.

There was nothing in either man's history to suggest they were capable of such ferocious violence.

James House, for Patrick Clifford, said: "He's had the good sense to accept responsibility and plead guilty."

Mark Jones, for Marsh, said he dumped the victim by the pub, hoping he would be found quickly and was too fearful of the co-accused to even make an anonymous call to summon help.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Castle said: "This could easily have been a murder investigation. This young man has been through a horrendous ordeal and I hope today's verdict goes some way to bringing closure on this chapter of his life."

Gary Clifford, said: "This incident has changed my life. It was absolutely horrendous and at the time I was wishing I could die. The pain was so unreal.

"But since then I have managed to move forward and I now want to put it behind me."

The officers in the case were commended by the judge.

I can never understand how more than one person gets involved with these things.

Don't know if posted before, but, here we go. There is a massive debate ATM on radio... What happened is this 'young, attractive girl' tried to catch the last bus home at 3:00am. The price was £5.00, but she only had £4.80. The driver wouldn't let her on the bus, as she didn't have enough cash, and none of the 30 passengers onboard would borrow her 20p (they could have donated 1p each!). She searched for 20p for 8 minutes, but the bus left. She arranged to meet her mum, but as she walked to meet her, she was raped by a person 'high on cocaine and alcohol'...

a) The man is a wa**er and should be in prison forever

b) What has happened to the country when nobody would borrow someone 20p?

Full article:

A NOTTINGHAM man has been convicted of violently attacking and raping a young woman in a city park.

Joseph Moran, 19, of Sneinton, was today found guilty of the attack at Forest Recreation Ground on December 9 last year.

3864165.png

He has been described by police as a “a singularly depraved and highly dangerous individual who committed a grotesque and extremely violent crime.”

Moran was convicted of rape and wounding with intent to cause GBH in a unanimous verdict by a jury at Nottingham Crown Court today.

His victim had been out in the city on Friday, December 9 for an early Christmas celebration.

She had arranged to be collected by her mother and was walking along Mansfield Road to meet her in the early hours of the following morning when Moran grabbed her and dragged her into the park.

He then subjected her to what the jury was told was an appalling and protracted attack.

The victim was found by police officers just after 4am, unconscious and with very serious injuries.

She was rushed to hospital and police began an immediate investigation. Moran was arrested within minutes.

Said Detective Chief Inspector Rob Griffin, who was in charge of the investigation: “This young woman has undergone extensive surgery to repair the physical damage she suffered.

“She has also received support to help her deal with the mental and emotional injuries.

“Moran refused to accept his guilt, and so added to the torment she and her family have had to endure.

“Despite her lasting physical, mental and emotional scars, this young woman has shown the most tremendous courage and dignity, despite the many challenges she has had to face, and has played a vital role in securing his conviction.

“Moran is a dangerous and violent man. A thorough police investigation and a courageous victim have ensured that he has been taken off the streets and no longer poses a risk to other women."

In a statement, the family thanked those involved in the case.

They said: “The last six months have been a very difficult time for my daughter and our family. We would like to thank the Police, the prosecuting counsel and the medical staff at the Queen’s Medical Centre for the care and support they have shown to us during this time.”

Saw it on the news yesterday. The police are not blaming anyone other than the attacker. The passengers were not to know and the driver followed company policy, The bloke may have finished up attacking somebody else.

Not sure what I would have done if I was a passenger at the time. We can all say afterwards someone should have given her the 20p or the driver should have waited for her to go to the cash-point. He may have been late already, a bus load of moaning passengers and wanting his bed after a shift of late night drinkers getting on his bus.

It's not about the law it's about the lack of decency in this world, if it was any other time of day it would be more understandable, but at 3am, and 20p, ffs.

When the **** did getting a bus cost £5 anyway?

Bus drivers are put in situations every day, where they have to make a call about passengers. Drivers stick to the company policy, obviously, but this is more than a policy in my opinion. Where is the human nature here? Obviously the driver wasn't to know that the girl was going to get attacked, but, surely he could have taken her name, let her on for £4.80 and then relayed the story back to the Trent and Barton. If the company want the 20p, you know what some companies are like, then they find a way of claiming the money back, but 20p (ffs), just makes the story look even worse, if that is at all possible.

People may blame the driver, but at least one of the 30 passengers on board could have borrowed her 20p, surely? You would think that, even out of frustration of the bus not going, someone would have given her 20p. I'm afraid the times of supporting one and other seem to have gone, people seem to be bothered about animals more than fellow humans. I would have gave her the 20p. Leaving a girl, especially a young girl, a student, in the middle of a big City with no buses running after this one, is horrible in my opinion. Anything could happen, and of course it did.

Of course, the person that attacked her was that high (and already had a fight earlier in the night) would probably have attacked somebody else if it wasn't that girl, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, I'm afraid. But I hope our poor system gives this person a long time in jail, he is a danger to the public. And how many accounts can you get him on? Using drugs, drunk, attacking, rape etc...

A minor point but it's annoying me.

Somebody could have LENT her 20p so she could have BORROWED some money to get home.

Gah!

what we don't know and what somebody alluded to, is how she acted, if she was drunk and shouting and being abusive, it would be much easier for other passengers to ignore and for the bus driver not to help. I don't know if that is what happened, I've not seen it on the news or anything, was this in the City Centre or at a club outside of the city?

If you are in the city centre there are other options, such as taxis or even police, there are normally more people around. I do agree with you that it stinks that someone gets left alone at 3am for the sake 20p (regardless of what happened, even if she had made it home safely it is still a shitty thing to do) I had a night bus drive past me in London once and not stop, even though I was waiting, not really drunk and had my hand out signalling, I was livid ended up walking home in a foul mood until I got caught up in a night marathon walk for Cancer Research and ended up surrounded by women in bras.

I digress, as human beings we need to look out for each other, so just remember this story if you are ever the passenger on that bus, it is easier than you would think to ignore somebody in need.
