what we don't know and what somebody alluded to, is how she acted, if she was drunk and shouting and being abusive, it would be much easier for other passengers to ignore and for the bus driver not to help. I don't know if that is what happened, I've not seen it on the news or anything, was this in the City Centre or at a club outside of the city?

If you are in the city centre there are other options, such as taxis or even police, there are normally more people around. I do agree with you that it stinks that someone gets left alone at 3am for the sake 20p (regardless of what happened, even if she had made it home safely it is still a shitty thing to do) I had a night bus drive past me in London once and not stop, even though I was waiting, not really drunk and had my hand out signalling, I was livid ended up walking home in a foul mood until I got caught up in a night marathon walk for Cancer Research and ended up surrounded by women in bras.

I digress, as human beings we need to look out for each other, so just remember this story if you are ever the passenger on that bus, it is easier than you would think to ignore somebody in need.

Apparently she wasn't that drunk, and wasn't being abusive. An ex bus driver was on the radio, saying that it would have been understandable to leave her if she was very drunk and abusive, obviously being a threat to the driver, passengers and the bus in the process.

And also, the article states that the attack happened near a busy road (not sure how busy it was between 3am - 4am). But there must have been a few people around, because the sick attacker ran over to a police patrol car and said he had found her.

I agree though, it is easier to ignore somebody in need. And that's what, sadly, plenty of people do.

This really is a serious question, and I’m sure I’ve asked it many times on here .And I'm certainly not thinking of any individual

FT posters , but I'm asking in a general way that seems to include many of us in our society

Please tell me why a person can be so much against corporal /capital punishment meted out by the state , and then utter that they really hope they receive all sorts of tortuous and barbaric kangaroo court punishments from equally despicable characters in the prison ?

All the arguments relating to wrongful convictions etc apply just the same in these circumstances

edit;

i actually include myself in this because i feel the same about it

I wish those horrible things on criminals, and support capital/corporal punishment!

As for the rapist mentioned above, my punishment would be as follows: Physical castration and 35 years in prison. Oh and I mean 35 years. No bail.

Just said on the news the driver has been disciplined. He did not follow company policy. If he had let her on no doubt he would have broken another rule.

What bus runs at 3 am and costs a fiver? That's blown my mind. Last bus anywhere round here is about half 12 and costs like a quid. Madness.

Nottingham to Mansfield.

Gotta say, I'm kind of suprised that the driver wouldn't even wait for her to nip to a cash point within a couple of seconds walk of the bus (I was listening to this on t'radio earlier).

I don't even think buses run here at 3am! Mind you, this place is a sh*t*ole so I always take the walk home alone.

Same, I heard that on Jeremy Vine earlier today.

If you saw it on the news, the road was on one level... then there was an embankment down to the pavement, then there was a another embankment down to a bush/flower bed type thing. You'd never see anything from the road.

It said she was searching for money in her bag for at least 8 minutes. The passengers were shouting 'get a move on' etc as people do. But even if it was out of frustration, I thought someone would have given her the 20p, just to get going so everyone could get to their destination.

Ahh, I listened to it on the radio so Vine just said that it was near a busy road. Even with that, I thought you wouldn't see anything anyway.

A couple of weekends ago at Newport Pagnell services on the M1, I witnessed for myself how ignorant some people can be.

A coach load of elderly ladies had stopped at the services for a break. The parking for coaches is a considerable walk away from the service area. I noticed a group of them slowly making their way along a pavement, when one of them tripped & planted her face into the ground. I was stood some 50 yards away from the incident & there must have been a dozen able-bodied people closer than me, but they all seemed to avert their gaze & pretended they hadn't noticed. It was my Dad & I that ran over to make sure she was ok & help her to her feet.

It is fair to say that we were a little cautious, not knowing how seriously she was hurt. Where were her carers? Is it safe to help her? Will she accuse us of anything inappropriate?

It seemed nobody else was going to help her.......so what else could we do??

With regards to the woman on the bus needing 20p - I can see why some people would prefer to look the other way & not get involved, but why at least one person couldn't come to her assistance is beyond me. The people on that bus will now be aware of what happened to that young woman & I would hope that they may act differently in ever in a similar situation.

How on Earth were you lifting her up?

How on Earth were you lifting her up?

She was a BIG lady!! She took some lifting, she was on crutches & she couldn't support her own weight. There was a point in the lifting process when I thought my Dad had better be careful where he was grabbing her........the dirty old bugger!!

Incidentally, she never thanked either of us. All I got for my effort was a large scratch on the back of my neck from one of her talons

Merc - Check your gas pipes

A mum has hit out at thieves who stole copper pipes from her house, flooding the property with gas.

The 44-year-old said the thieves had put lives at risk for the sake of scrap metal worth £40.

A number of houses in her neighbourhood – around Narborough Road, Leicester – have been targeted in a similar fashion in recent months.

The price of scrap metal, including copper, is at an all-time high and is driving a crimewave across the county.

The gas pipes were cut from the outside of the property, where the woman, who is deaf, lives with her three-year-old daughter.

The action caused gas to flow into their home.

"The awful smell hit me as soon as I opened the front door," said the woman, who asked not to be named.

"There was a haze in the air which had a blue tinge to it.

"Normally my daughter charges into the house ahead of me and switches on the lights, but fortunately she didn't do that on this occasion.

"I dread to think what could have happened if she had, or if someone had walked past the house smoking a cigarette.

"I was really worried so I went around the house trying to find out where the gas was coming from.

"I checked the fireplace and the cooker, but I couldn't find anything.

"I opened the back door to get some air into the house and went outside because the smell was so strong, and then I noticed that the gas pipes at the side of the house were gone.

"I can't understand why someone would saw through a gas pipe. As well as everyone else, they're putting their own lives at risk, aren't they?"

She said that the repair man said the amount of copper taken was worth about £40 as scrap.

"Why would you put lives at risk for the sake of £40?" she said.

The woman sent a text message to her mother, who then alerted gas engineers who went immediately to disconnect the supply to the house.

She now faces a repair bill of up to £1,250 because she has chosen to have her gas pipes installed inside the house instead of on an exterior wall.

The company with which her house is insured has said that it will not pay to cover the extra work.

The woman's mother, who lives in the south of England, said: "Luckily my daughter does not smoke and didn't switch on the lights because it was in the early evening.

"I can't believe that someone would put people's lives at risk in this way."

Sergeant Simon Barnes, of Hinckley Road police station, said there had been a number of similar incidents in the area over the past few months.

He added that a thief was jailed recently for a series of similar thefts.

"We are going to end up with a house being blown up because the pipe has been cut and there has been a spark," he said.

"We would urge people to call us if they see anything suspicious and we will come and check it out."

Anyone who spots any suspicious activity outside homes is asked to call police on 101 immediately.

Here's the thing reading that, and then comparing it to some of the prisoners on "Lifers", I genuinely think that what they have done is worse, their actions could have very easily resulted in the death of 2 people one a young child and it was only luck that it didn't, and their motivations were greed. I find that much worse than someone losing it and killing someone through blind rage and anger.

I'm sure their court defenders would plead ignorance (stupidity) I thought it was a water pipe guv!

Baby beater jailed for six months

A man who was caught on camera repeatedly punching a friend's sleeping baby has been jailed for six months.

The parents of the 20-month-old boy had become concerned about the behaviour of Stephen Carty, 39, and put a camera in the room, Newcastle Crown Court heard.

Carty of, Westfield Park in Wallsend, said he carried out the attack while under "pressure" because his daughter had health problems.

He admitted assaulted occasioning actual bodily harm. The baby recovered.

The hearing heard how the child, who was bruised after being hit on the back, was found covered in vomit after the attack at a house party in Gateshead in May.

'Distressed state'

Mark Donkin, prosecuting, said: "As a result of concerns about the child, the parents had set up a video camera in the child's room.

"During the course of the evening the child was put to bed in its cot. During the evening the defendant was seen to leave the party area and go to the toilet.

"He was followed by the child's father and he saw the defendant coming from the direction of the child's bedroom.

"The father went to the child's room and could see the child had vomited and was in a distressed state in the cot.

"When looking at the video later he saw the defendant strike the child five times while he was sleeping then leave the room quickly."

Chris Morrison, defending, said Carty felt "remorse" for what he had done.

6 months wow 6 years aint enough in my eyes .grrrrrrrrrrrr ime fuming what a c**t he is and the judge aswell grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
