Ross_Spencer Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 But we have Steve Oakley for Plan B Who is this Steve Oakley you speak of? Is it Steve Howards and Matt Oakleys love child
Babylon Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 Who is this Steve Oakley you speak of? It's Steve Howard is you are a Swedish ground announcer.
Kent Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 Most of his goals came from counter attacking football, which is what Sven advocates massively. They tore us to pieces on the counter at their gaff and Long was exceptional at it. I don't think we counter attack to be honest. We like to keep possession and stroke it around more than anything, don't get me wrong we're no Barcelona but I wouldn't say we sit deep, work to get the ball and then explode forward on the break. From what I've seen of Reading they seem more direct and counter attacking than us so I don't know how well SL would adapt to our system.
PegguyArphexad Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 Steve Oakley has a fantastic goalscoring record for Leicester. Is it 4 in 1? That's a goal every 22.5 minutes... Who needs Long?
Happy Fox Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 http://www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/Leicester-City-8216-closing-record-signing-Long/story-13062503-detail/story.html Leicester City are closing in on the club record signing of striker Shane Long, according to reports last night. City are said to be winning the race to sign the Reading striker, beating off interest from Premier League Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion and Championship rivals West Ham United. Shane Long City have tabled an initial £6 million bid. The deal will rise further depending with add-ons and clauses, including goals targets and promotion. The Mercury revealed last week that Long had emerged as City’s number one target.
FrankieADZ Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 £6+millions for a striker who has only had 1 good season. by that i mean.....double figures in terms of goals; just seems steep imo. I could understand if he's had 2 or 3 15+ goals a season but he hasnt. So to a measure he's still 100% unproven imo,
MikeyT Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 If this happens, Reading will have made some money from us this summer.

thybluefox Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 Part of me wants him signed just so this whole sage is over. Thats worth £6million alone surely?
Guest shearfox Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 Overpriced without doubt, but we could do with him and he will get the goals we need. Reading are willing to sell unlike Bristol so this is certainly more likely to happen than the Maynard deal in my view despite interest from the PL.

FrankieADZ Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 But he is a talent though, and someone who will have his best years ahead for us imo no doubting that; theres a part of me thats just worried that all this could go tits up.
Ric Flair Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 I couldn't give a cuntybollocks how much we pay. If he scores 24 goals for us this season then it'll be worth every penny. Every striker we have placed a bid for this summer comes with a gamble factor. At least Long scored a lot of goals last season. Maynard was out injured, so was this North Korean. Robbie Keane and Yakubu would be the safest in terms of their proven quality but both have clouds over their name due to age, wage and weight issues. What do people want? A striker who has scored a lot of goals at this level for a couple of million? Well fook off and play Football manager and use the editor, it doesn't happen any longer in football. We have cash, let's spend it and get promoted. It's not a trick.

If Long scores the goals that get us up his value to us would be far greater than £7m.
Petchy Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 Really not convinced with Shane Long, but I trust Sven so will wait and see.

Fez of Mahrez Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 I saw a fair bit of Long last season but, more interestingly, I also saw him in a pre-season game at Northampton recently. He scored a decent goal and generally looked dangerous as you would expect. But it's more his aura that stands out. It reminded me of Darren Bent when Sunderland played us in pre-season - that impression of a Premier League standard striker with a good touch and fantastic movement off the ball. People will say he has only had one good season but he is clearly an improving and developing player. The Ireland/Trapattoni link may have come into play again here as with SSL. Not sure if that's been mentioned yet. I think he'd be an excellent signing. He is quite a good all-round player with pace, strength and aerial ability. We haven't had many (any?) forwards like that since Heskey.
mkaiser1 Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 Haven't voted on this as there's no option for a mere 'Yes'. The reason I'd vote that - and I think this is something we all need to think of -is that £6m isn't alot when you consider the negative impact it will have on Reading's results. Reading (I would expect) would be a playoff team this season at worst but with the loss of their captain and key defender coupled with the loss of their main striker, it increases City's chances more than just getting another good striker would. I don't know if we can put a price on this, but the difference between promotion and non-promotion is £multimillion more than £6m. Also, Sven is buying a lot of British players - this might be useful in 2 or 3 seasons time as they will either stay with us as we no doubt climb the Prem, or get sold at a profit to teams in need of British players with Prem experience. All food for thought when considering "Is £6m too much for Shane Long".
Fez of Mahrez Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 Completely disagree that Reading will struggle if they lose Long. They have great depth to their squad. They can cope with losing their star striker a lot better than most teams IMO. But we'll see.
MikeyT Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 It's not a saga until this thread reaches 100 pages!! We best get cracking then!

thybluefox Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 It's not a saga until this thread reaches 100 pages!! Haha, I meant the striker saga in general, rather than Long himself.
mkaiser1 Posted 3 August 2011 Posted 3 August 2011 Shane Long isn't British! Do you know what...you're absolutely right! Don't know why I just placed the whole of Ireland in Britain!
