Raw Dykes Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 I searched for this thread and couldn't find it, so I'll start it myself. They don't necessarily have to be your favourites, just albums that blew you away, or opened your eyes in some way. Mine have to be: 1) Nevermind - Nirvana Couldn't really be anything else at no.1 2) Hot Rats - Frank Zappa My dad kept all his vinyl under my desk. Decided to play some one day, heard this and thought, "Why the fvck have I never heard this before?" 3) Astro-Creep:2000 - White Zombie Was exactly what I was looking for when I heard it. Just perfect. I thought it was written with me in mind. 4) Mirrored - Battles Rock from the future. 5) Home Invasion - Ice-T At school, me and all my friends eventually had a copy (or a copy of a copy of a copy) of this on cassette. Couldn't believe there was so much effin' and jeffin' all on one little bit of tape. Brilliant!

Alexikokopops Posted 19 September 2011 Posted 19 September 2011 James and Guitar band shock!!! I see as Nevermind is 20 years old this month there is a free exhabition on Brick Lane this week. I hadn't heard about that. Might pop along and grab a curry while I'm there.
shen Posted 19 September 2011 Posted 19 September 2011 Underworld - Beaucoup Fish - Probably would never have delved into electronic music if it weren't for them. Such an epic album, and a shame they never reached those heights again. Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon - Such a big influence on my music taste. The most iconic of the albums and the one that stands out in my opinion. I consider myself somewhat eclectic, but prog has been my favourite genre for years and still is, which is largely due to them. Tool - Aenima - Always had a soft spot for heavy rock. Their sound and in particular drummer Carey completely blew me away in my early teens. Their lack of productivity and their slightly underwhelming effort from 2006 means I've lost some affection for them, but they kick-started my whole heavy prog period. Porcupine Tree - In Absentia - Upon hearing a song of the Deadwing album in a shop, I impulsively bought the one album I could find which was this one. It got me hooked and I now have most of their back catalogue as a result. In a way, I felt they could combine the emotions I got from listening to Tool AND Pink Floyd at the same time while having a distinct sound of their own. I hold these guys in very high regard and even if it isn't possible to compare bands, they do set a kind of benchmark for me. Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine - The one album that both me and my sister absolutely loved! To be fair, she had a decent taste in music then, but our paths have since gone in separate directions. I hadn't heard anything like this when it came out and I still think it's one of the most successful examples of genre crossovers. Was also wildly different from generic mainstream music with their lyrics.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 20 September 2011 Posted 20 September 2011 American Football - American Football The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses City & Colour - Sometimes Placebo - Black Market Music Glassjaw - Everything You've Ever Wanted To Know About Silence
hairy Posted 20 September 2011 Posted 20 September 2011 A Guy Called Gerald - Black Secret Technology Linton Kwesi Johnson - Dread Beat an Blood The Subhumans - The Day The Country Died King Crimson - Court Of The Crimson King Burial - Untrue 5 is not enough! Edit forgot Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Uplift Mofo Party Plan really changed my music tates for a couple of years. Shame everything they have done since is poor by comparison. Could of gone for Dummy, Blue Lines, F#A#oo, Nevermind, I This It, Screamadelica, A Northern Soul but I had various releases by the artists before the albums were released so they didn't have as much impact.
Jay Posted 20 September 2011 Posted 20 September 2011 I hadn't heard about that. Might pop along and grab a curry while I'm there. it's at The Loading Bay gallery which is near Rough Trade East, Old Trueman Brewery area of Brick Lane. don't seem to have a website though There is a ridiculous food stall outside outside rough trade on Saturdays as well. Was planning on heading down this Sat myself wanted to go to Graffik in Ladbroke grove as well, but stupid Circle Line closures make it a pain in the arse to get to.

Sorry mate but i did have a good old chuckle at this then relating it to the title and i laughed again
martyn Posted 20 September 2011 Posted 20 September 2011 Boards of Canada: Music Has the Right to Children My Bloody Valentine: Loveless Godspeed You Black Emperor: F#A#O Nas: Illmatic Idlewild: 100 Broken Windows The first 4 albums I loved and made me check out other material in the same genre. The 5th album reminds me that as well as diving into 'pretentious' genres, there is still a place for simplicity.
Nick Posted 20 September 2011 Posted 20 September 2011 Albums that changed my life (not my top rated 'musical albums') impossible to pick 5 - Here are a basic 20ish albums that influenced me massively at a range of ages. The Clash - Cut The CrapThe Cure - Bloodflowers Enter Shikari - Common Dreads Foo Fighters - One By One Klaxons - Myths Of The Near Future Manic Street Preachers - Postcards From A Young Man Mastodon - Crack The Skye Nirvana - Bleach Primal Scream - Screamedelica Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation Stiff Little Fingers - Guitar And Drum Stone Roses - Stone Roses
Samilktray Posted 20 September 2011 Posted 20 September 2011 Donuts - J Dilla Low End Theory - A Tribe Called Quest Get Rich Or Die Tryin - 50 Cent (not ashamed to say this) Untrue - Burial College Dropout - KanYe West Reasonable Doubt - Jay-Z Stillmatic - Nas (Illmatic is the better album but theres something about Stillmatic for me) Word Of Mouf - Ludacris Home Sweet Home - Kano Off the top of my head anyway.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 20 September 2011 Posted 20 September 2011 Bona Drag - Morrissey A bit of a lame choice as it's actually a compilation of singles and their 'b' sides but it took me ages to realise this at the time, and it hangs together better than most proper albums anyway, I reckon. I always think of this as the first 'proper' record I got my hands on, my formative years being spent listening to stuff that my older brother enjoyed, like Dire Straits and Billy Joel (such heady times). I'd always quite liked Morrissey and the Smiths but as a callow youth raised on daytime radio and my Mum and Dad's old fashioned tastes, and by default sucked into the mainstream world of recorded music, getting into anything vaguely alternative seemed like a huge and frightening leap of faith. I asked for this particular record because it had 'Suedehead' on it (which remains my favourite song to this day, more than twenty years later), but was amazed to find that I loved every single one of the fourteen tracks. Ouija boards! The Kray twins! Disability! Burning hairdressers! Rent boys! At last, someone writing about things I could relate to Radiator - Super Furry Animals This is one of those unusual records that you expect to enjoy but it massively exceeds your expectations anyway. SFA are always pretty eclectic but the mixture of dischordant glam stompathons, atmospheric ballads, two minute pop songs and barely listenable techno is spot on. I can definitely say it's a great album whether or not you're on a drug The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars - David Bowie It's probably not even my favourite Bowie album, but I bought it pretty much on a whim, and a bit like the slaying of the demon of my fear of alternative music, this destroyed my perception that music from ye olden times was somehow deficient or less satisfying than current music. It's very easy to focus on the here and now, and of course stylistically music evolves over time, like any art form, but it doesn't by default get any better The Life Pursuit - Belle & Sebastian I'd been a fan of theirs for years, but I was amazed by this when it came out and it's probably in my top three most listened to albums ever. It's just a perfect pop record to me - there's a lot going on in it, but not a note is wasted. It's a shame that a lot of other B&S fans seem to hate it, but this just goes to show how ridiculous and precious so called indie fans can be Vauxhall and I - Morrissey Morrissey again, sorry. After a slightly disappointing album (which in turn had followed a very disappointing one) my expectations weren't that high, but this is just beautiful, and is possibly my favourite album. Like a lot of my favourite records, there's a lot of instruments used and a lot of layers, but it all hangs together fantastically. Absolutely lush, atmospheric, frequently spine tingling in its beauty and seventeen years later he's not really come close to making another as good
