Walshy5 Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 Just a quick rant but been thinking lately why did sven by so many CM,s in the summer but no wingers. We,re playing a diamond midfield to try to accomadate them all which means we lack width. If we had bought a cupple of wingers and maybe one or two less CM,s then obviously this wouldnt be a problem. I await the sven bumming brigade to slate me!
The Doctor Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 Because we really struggled in CM last season numbers wise, and (if you believe even 10% of the stuff in the papers) we did go in for several wingers, we just didn't manage to do any deals.
EnderbyFox Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 It would appear that Sven's initial idea was to play 4-3-3, he also stated that he wanted 2 players for each position
Simmo86 Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 Don't see the problem with the diamond anyway? Norwich used it all of last season, did a job for them!
Walshy5 Posted 30 September 2011 Author Posted 30 September 2011 It would appear that Sven's initial idea was to play 4-3-3, he also stated that he wanted 2 players for each position Even if he did want to play 4-3-3 that would require wingers and the only recognised winger at the club is Lloyd Dyer and i dont believe in playing strikers out wide ie Vassell, Nugent even in a 4-3-3
acooling08 Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 We do lack width. Someone who can skin a defender, get to the byline and cross the ball. I can't stand Wellens or Konchesky floating it in aimlessly. We need a Guppy
Tielemans63 Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 For me, getting in a winger or two is the key to the lock. I honestly think if some quality was added down the flanks we'd be flying.
Len Finsbury Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 I don't understand all this 'we need a winger' stuff. We only need wingers if he wants to play with wingers. Sven preferred the diamond for England, perhaps it's his preferred formation. In which case, we don't need wingers. Also, as the diamond is a narrow formation, we're not likely to have any width, are we? Nor would we want any as it would disrupt the diamond shape. We don't need to buy every type of player available 'just in case'. We need to have a team of players that fit a system and if the diamond is Sven's formation for this season, then so be it.
Fox92 Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 I agree. We have to many central midfielders and Sven tries to accomodate them all at times. I would have liked us to have brought a quality right winger (quality, not Gallagher).
MrAus Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 Would absolutely love Townsend from Spurs after watching him last night !!!!

somebum Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 For me, getting in a winger or two is the key to the lock. I honestly think if some quality was added down the flanks we'd be flying. Not with this manager. It's the same old story: "Once we get...."
Trav Le Bleu Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 Very few teams play with dedicated wingers anymore. So what's the fuss?
Webbo Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 There are times when we are crying out for width, it's why I can't understand why Dyer isn't at least on the bench.

That's plan A sorted. But what about plan B? Sometimes a diamond might not work and we NEED width to alter the game. That's when our lack of wingers becomes an issue. Agree with Webbo. Dyer can provide it, whether he's got the quality to consistently change a game is another question.
kam6 Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 point is we lack width and with no wingers our full backs are exposed. one of the reasons why people slate koncheskey too.
bluebeau Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 There was an article in the Mercury this week regarding wingers. I can't remember the name of the reporter, but he stated that football clubs just don't play with wingers anymore, or at least very, very few do. It's a fact that there just aren't any of the exciting type of wingers that we used to see. The Lennie Glovers, Steve Lynex, Steve Guppy, Darren Eadie etc. that would take on defenders, beat them, take the ball to the line & cut the ball back into the box where a centre forward ( taget man ) would be there ready to head the ball into the net, or a Gary Lineker ready to strike. Exciting times that got the crowd roaring. What has happened to Eamon Duffy? Where is he? He was a very good winger when he broke into the Blackburn 1st team. Then we had the MON era when our team would often play with wing-backs, this was very effective & great to watch. But alas, it's not 'fashionable' to play with wingers now, regrettably in my opinion. However.....................In Sven we trust!
Joe. Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 Tanner says Beckford, Johnson and Wellens all major doubts. So who in midfield? Picks itself really. Abe, Fernandes, King, Danns. Hopefully Nugent's fit, but Schlupp's putting more than his fair share of weight around to get a sniff.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 I do believe we should have a couple of quality wingers, in order to change the style of play, should the need arise. We just can't totally rely on the "diamond" formation.
Babylon Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 Even if he did want to play 4-3-3 that would require wingers and the only recognised winger at the club is Lloyd Dyer and i dont believe in playing strikers out wide ie Vassell, Nugent even in a 4-3-3 His thinking would have been that with Dyer, Gallagher, Vassel, Waghorn and the additions of Danns, Nugent and Schlupp we were covered with options n the "wide striker/midfielder" roles, we scored quite a few goals last year with them there. Where as the CM department was massively lacking in numbers. I would agree we probably have one too many, maybe Johnson became available and he thought he was too good a player to pass up on, who knows.
cc_star Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 we haven't got many options to alter a game, managers apparently like options but Sven has opted not to buy himself any with regards to this, seems odd to me, but Sven knows what he's doing, hopefully.

bettso Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 There are times when we are crying out for width, it's why I can't understand why Dyer isn't at least on the bench. It might have something to do with the fact that he's crap. A winger that cant cross is as good as having no wingers at all. Stick to the diamond.
funkyrobot Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 Very few teams play with dedicated wingers anymore. So what's the fuss? The best teams in England have quality options on the wing.
