Well, if the doubters had their eyes open tonight even they might have seen the value of Lloyd Dyer and the difference pace makes to any attack.

That's seven points from three games not only since Pearson returned but since Dyer returned too.

Again, Pearson maintained the number of potential scorers in our team and may just have added another with the energy and attacking commitment he's clearly got out of Danns.

And, although he didn't score we at last made something of the presence of Mills in the attacking box with two headers from the front half of goal almost bringing some reward.

Altogether Pearson won the tactical battle hands down and showed Blackpool that, even with a commitment to attack and a whole bevy or players who can flick the ball about dangerously, attacks can be contained with relative ease if there's little or no real pace.

Dyer - the man who supposedly struggles to deliver a final ball - picked out two simple yet perfectly weighted passes to lay on goals for King and Danns.

And, despite Blackpool contributing some tidy football, it was City who always seemed the most threatening with Nugent desperately close to an outstanding breakaway goal when he blitzed the chasing defender for pace and chipped the ball coolly past the keeper only to see it go wide of the far post.

Howard blasted a decent shot just over, Nugent hit a gruber past the far post, Mills had his headers, Gallagher a decent free kick and finally King might have rounded off another decent performance with a snapshot wide which he might just have taken a little quicker.

But, once again, Pearson managed to draw a solid collective performance out of his side with everyone seemingly aware of the role required from them.

Another clean sheet, the second in three games not only complimented the back four but also the likes of King whose more defensive role has made us meaner and helped our passing flow better coming out from the back and also the likes of Dyer and Nugent who also added some decent recovery work to their more creative efforts.

Pearson chose to suck Blackpool in and hit them fast on the break and it worked perfectly but I really didn't like to see the negative ball retaining at the end when there were players and spaces available in the box to possibly score again.

For me there was more risk in the possession play because the ball was inevitably lost and there was no chance of us scoring from such tactics.

Had we kept playing for goals I didn't see that Blackpool had the energy to break us down at the end.

They were a spent force when the second goal went in and, although I imagine possession was quite even, we really could have scored more with Beckford also going close on a couple of occasions and King and Dyer both having a case for being more greedy and shooting instead of passing when breaking through wide of goal.

But nothing should overshadow an organised, professional victory which finally lifted us into the play-off places for what I believe was the first time this season.

Man of the Match? Lloyd Dyer for his two vital assists but with so many honourable mentions to the likes of King, Nugent and the back four generally.

I didn't agree with Schlupp being discarded and I do wish Beckford would pass the ball to his team mates occasionally but for all that tonight was possibly his best all-round game for the club. Still a long way to go but he still might have had a brace...his ability to take shots early is quite exceptional.

Again I disagree with Nigel's subs, Gallagher had a good game, his delivery from set pieces was better today and he has the ability to score or create a goal from nothing and Beckford was playing better than Nugent and deserved to stay on. What benefit is there in playing Fernandes for the last few minutes :dunno: but then he's the manager and gets paid to make these decisions, just not the ones I would have made.

But it was a very good performance another good result top 6 :scarf:

I have a feeling it will be back to SSL for the Hull game.... I am GUESSING he picked Bamba as he fitted in more with his counter-attack mentality for the game... and one big difference between Bamba and SSL is that Bamba is more mobile and gets forward more... now that might not work away from home when you are Nigel Pearson and you like to keep it tight at the back when playing away from home...

Not saying Danns shouldn't have come on I just feel like it was harsh on Gally and Beckford when both were playing well.

It was exactly the same subs as on Saturday and it wouldn't surprise me this Saturday to see the same changes at the same time.

Only a small point about the subs, and it was good to see Danns playing well and score, another man who looks like he is benefitting from NP.

Beckford had two damned good shots which might have earned him goals. Otherwise he looked keen enough but certainly didn't play well. His lack of either vision or selflessness frustrated his team-mates no end. Four times in the first half he totally ignored well placed runners to go it alone into a proverbial brick wall. It's a wonder the players bother making the runs at all for all the chance they've got of getting a pass. And his control was still clumsy at times. "Better" was probably the most you could say. He's dangerous no question and his ability to shoot so early is what sets him apart but I'd not say he "played well" at all. People want to believe he played well but for anyone else tonight would rated a six or seven at the most.

While I understand that Mills didn't pass it well, especially 2nd half and Bamba might have given away the odd free kick, I thinks it's worth reminding ourselves that we kept a clean sheet against a team that scores for fun. I was impressed with the defensive work of both and expect them to continue together.

I was very impressed with the fine technique and body position that Beckford displayed with his two fine efforts that brought outstanding saves from Gilkes.

Very pleased with that. We played as a team and that's what won us the game. Countless chances, how Nugent or Veckford didn't score tonight is beyond me.

Everyone from start to finish was well pumped up and for me this was the first time you could tell the team ethic about us.

Let's hope we can build on this.

That's what it's about, we're a team now. Say what you like about Pearson's football but for me the people that claim it to be some bore-fest are talking rubbish. Every man in your team trying their heart out, working hard to wear down the opposition in an up-and-at-em manner and defending resolutely? Entertainment enough for me.

How many times this season under Sven did we all walk away from the KP struggling to remember a chance, having seen us fail to break down the Bristol Citys and Readings of this league?! Tonight there were nigh on ten opportunities where we could have scored.

I think I agree with you. The thing is no-one can claim Beckford is a good player on what we've seen so far. His touch is terrible, his passing suspect and so often he fails to find the right pass. But he does look like a goalscorer in the main. I think Pearson recognises this and is happy to give him an hour or so to see if he can get a goal and then freshen it up with someone better equipped to help the team overall when it's tiring.

Tonight he did okay though, two fantastic saves to deny him.

Nugent is obviously right up his street and rightly so. The guy works so hard but matches it with skill and ability. Fantastic work again tonight.

Other points...

Schmeichel has made such a difference this year. Eight clean sheets! We've now got a keeper who wins us points rather than costs us them. Is there a better keeper in the league?

Glad to see Bamba back although he looked like he might have been asked/encouraged to keep it a little more simple than usual. Not surprising but the couple of times he did attempt his thang it didn't seem as relaxed or free-flowing. I love his ability on the ball but even without this he's such an asset with his size and aerial ability. St Ledger's done well but he's just not as good as Bamba.

Fernandes making an appearance: I think if he was wanting to be off NP would know this by now and he wouldn't be involved. Seemed keen to show what he could do in his limited time.

Andy King. I'm not buying into all of this Gary Speed nonsense, King did what King will continue to do with or without any bereavements; hard work, clever runs and ability on the ball. I think that's probably the first time this season that someone's found him on one of those runs, he's been making them as much as ever but we just haven't been finding him.

Overall it just all feels so very right. The players clearly want to work for Pearson and in 90 minutes you get a very small glimpse of why. The way he spurs them on from the side, the man hugs for Beckford, the way he greets them off the pitch individually at the end with a different kind of affection for each one. Again we're getting that feeling back that we are part of the team, getting that connection with the players that I've only felt during the MON years and his last reign. Pearson's back where he wants to be, where I want him to be and I'm feeling optimistic about the rest of the season.

Can't believe I'm about to say this but I agree with Thrac about Beckford. Was shocked to read how many people thought he played well.

If he'd not had those two shots that were well saved his all round contribution to the game was questionable.

King made some absolutely fantastic runs last night. Only two of them got picked out - the first led to a goal and for the second his cut-back was intercepted in the six-yard box.

Man of the match for me.

Bamba continues to look our best centre back, despite the occasional aberration.

Are you for real what does beckford have to do score a hatrick every game I saw a big difference in beckford he looked confident and very sharp you can say what you like about him but he will come good.he needs the fans behind him not constantly on his back I for one will be chuffed when hes on top form

Nobody is on his back they are just saying what they saw. Was there more effort from him, yes. Did he get involved in the game a bit more, yes. Was his first touch and passing still bloody woeful, yes.

To say he was "brilliant" or "awsome" as I've seen people state is just nonsense though considering his basics were still below what you'd expect. It's a promising improvement from him, and for his failings he could easily have had a goal or maybe even two yesterday.

I thought Blackpool played well 1st half, although we gave them a bit too much time on the ball and better teams may have taken more advantage. 2nd half we perked up and started to press the ball higher up the field. 2 well worked goals and 2nd half we never looked like losing it. Beckford was unlucky wit two good efforts, he may not have sublime ball skills but he is always a threat and defenders must hate marking him, he does f**k all for 20 minutes then spins or turns so quickly and shoots early. He'll frustrate us us but I suspect he will get his fair share of goals. 1st half we huffed and puffed and managed to keep them out, so much more confidence 2nd half we looked like we meant business.
