Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 20 February 2012 Posted 20 February 2012 To be fair something can only really be overrated if people like it. Yeah you're right, just sort of defeats the object of being overrated i guess! But you see my point too.
Raw Dykes Posted 20 February 2012 Posted 20 February 2012 IMO, the point of Family Guy is that the characters and plots are really just a vehicle for lots of individually funny sketches or one liners. I totally agree with this, and this is the main reason it is so badly written. The writers either have no clue about building good plots or characters or just can't be arsed. The sketches normally consist of a random 80s pop culture reference in a random location or event performing a random activity. For example, Peter might say, "Remember that time I was A.L.F.'s boxing trainer in Kentucky?" Cut to flashback of 5 minute boring boxing match between A.L.F. and Colonel Sanders trading blows, with Peter on the sidelines shouting abuse. A child could write this stuff. I'm ridiculously cynical about most American humour, but I think Family Guy is one of the funniest programmes ever made. I was skeptical at first, I admit. Each to their own, but it's never made me laugh. Can you think of any really funny Family Guy scenes? Or a stand out episode I may have missed? There's a lot of great American humour; Spinal Tap, South Park, The Simpsons, Tim & Eric, etc., but from what I've seen, I think Family Guy is far from it. I wish I could see what other people like so much about it. A lot of the humour is absolutely biting satire and, admittedly, could sometimes be lost on non-American audiences because of context. I'm not sure this is the case. I wouldn't say a lot of the humour is satire, I'd say a fraction is. I think most of it is just pop culture references or those drawn out jokes that go way past the point they should have ended. The show has never gone over my head. I mean I always know what they're trying to say, on the rare occasion they actually are. Some of the nostalgic pop culture references are just too obscure, I admit, but it's clear when they attempt satire, and I've never seen them do it well.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 20 February 2012 Posted 20 February 2012 The UK Office Nirvana Napoleon Dynamite Justin Bieber Any book made in to a film Most of the England team The Hangover 1 & 2 Avatar Madonna 3D TV's X Factor Celebrity Juice Any Character created by Leigh Francis Arsene Wenger Really? What about films like Jaws? They are classic films (the first two anyway!!!!!!) I havent read the book myself but i know people who have who say although its altered it is a great film from the book. Though again, gererally you might be right i think.

Yeah but the point is, you wouldn't watch it for the storylines. For instance, I often flick onto an episode mid-way through and just enjoy the jokes. Lots to be fair, but obviously it's down to personal taste. I'm not sure this is the case. I wouldn't say a lot of the humour is satire, I'd say a fraction is. I think most of it is just pop culture references or those drawn out jokes that go way past the point they should have ended. Again, the drawn out jokes are just down to individual taste. For example, I think The Fast Show is one of the all-time best comedy shows, and that was basically a handful of jokes spread of a series or two. I think a huge proportion of the comedy value comes from the one-liners, like my favourite: Lois: "Peter, you're acting like a child" Peter: "If I'm a child, that makes you a paedophile, and I refuse to be lectured by a pervert"
Raw Dykes Posted 20 February 2012 Posted 20 February 2012 The UK Office is just brilliant and you cannot rate it highly enough, so it is impossible to be overrated, as much as Gervais has been rightly slagged off for being overrated, the UK Office really is TV perfection. As for any book made into a film, do you mean that the book is overrated or the film? I assume the mean the film is overrated and not as good as the book, but it sounds like you think that any book that has had the audacity to be made into a film is shit. If you mean the former then I say you are wrong, and what you mean to say is any film made from a book that I had previously read. For example the Bourne trilogy, good films (although I would stick them in here as overrated), never read the books so I don't know if they are better or not. I totally agree with you about The Office (original), Chris Moyles, the Bourne films and to a large extent Ricky Gervais, so I find it really odd that we disagree so strongly about Family Guy. Actually, since the UK Office has been mentioned, I'm assuming they think the US remake isn't overrated. It's definitely the other way around. The original could well be the best thing that ever happened to television, while the American remake is just ok. It's pretty good, but gets far too much credit for what it is.

Don't agree with eveyrthing you've said but I will say that Simpsons is far and away better than Family Guy.
GLC Posted 20 February 2012 Posted 20 February 2012 I was saying, 90% of films that are taken from books, I.e. Lord of The Rings, Harry Potter, I Am Legend and so on, are a big let down, with often changes to the story that most of the time doesn't add much. Regarding The Office, it was ok, but it wasn't the that great, the funniest bit was trying to get the trainer over the roof
Fox92 Posted 20 February 2012 Posted 20 February 2012 Arsene Wenger I know things are not going well for him at the minute but overrated? No.
GLC Posted 20 February 2012 Posted 20 February 2012 I know things are not going well for him at the minute but overrated? No. I disagree, since the unbeaten season, the team hasn't looked anywhere near as good, it's time for him to leave for the good of the club
Captain... Posted 20 February 2012 Posted 20 February 2012 I disagree, since the unbeaten season, the team hasn't looked anywhere near as good, it's time for him to leave for the good of the club But is that his fault or the players? Which admittedly he signed. I don't think anyone else would get much more out of those players, what I think Arsene should be rated for is transforming the way the club was run, they have consistently made profit, which they needed to after building the emirates, they have bought well, generally improved the players and then been forced to sell them rather than be blackmailed into higher wages. They have been blighted by injuries, and signing Mertesacker was a mistake, but when they can get their squad fully fit they have some outstanding young talents which will set them up for years to come. Ramsey, Wilshire, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jenkins, they are just the British ones, there is still more to come form Walcott then you have Ryo who is proving himself to be a prospect at Bolton. They made mistakes and I think players like Rosciky, Song, Mertesacker, I don't rate Koscielny and they need a better keeper, but for the way he has run that club more so than managed the team he should be considered to be one of the best.

The way he has run the club should be appluaded, but maybe it's time to take a step upstairs, rather then manage the team, before he gets more fans on his back. Some of the players he has signed have been nothing short of poor
Finnegan Posted 20 February 2012 Posted 20 February 2012 Calling the UK Office TV perfection is just proving GLCs point. What a load of rubbish, I can't stand the show and I'm not alone.

Of course you're not alone but so what? what TV show, or movie, or band does everyone like??? None. p.s. Was a great show though, unlike the Yanky one.

Was a great show though, unlike the Yanky one. To appreciate the American one (which I don't, fully), you have to forget about the original. They realised after the first series that the mockumentary humour was too subtle for the American audience and so went off in their own direction.
