What makes a big club?

Was talking about it to a friend the other day and I'm sure I'm right.

I think it should be based on fanbase, history, facilities and current position.

He seems to think it's history alone meaning he thinks Huddersfield are bigger than Newcastle lol. However, some Birmingham fan thinks it's entirely on recent history, just the last few years.

Where do you draw the line??

I'd say Leicester were about the 6th biggest club in the league this year behind Leeds, West Ham, Southampton, Forest and Derby.

Thats a joke, right?.

Current league position/recent history, really old history and fanbase I'd say.

Depends who you talk to though, every club will try and swing it their way.

How come you highlighted Forest and not Derby? lol

Derby are the same as Forest but with shitter support (especially away) less trophies, and a large chunk of their history in the third tier and at the bottom of the second.

I think fanbase is the most important thing, being a big club is about it's potential. History can be an indicator of future potential but it has to be consistent. For example, Forest won the European Cup and title in a short space of time but have an average/wank history otherwise. Leicester's recent history is shit but it is pretty much our worst spell since the dawn of time so it's ridiculous to assume we're a small, run of the mill Championship club in the grand scheme of things. Were we Doncaster we'd be whooping with joy after this season but we know things will more than likely get better within the next 5-10 years.

I'd agree with history, fanbase and current position. I guess it is dependant on the club that you support, the reason Birmingham fans say it's just recent history would be due to them spending a few years in the Prem recently and their league cup win. No doubt Wednesday fans would say it's fanbase alone.

Leeds - fair enough (not that it counted much on the last day.. lol)

West Ham - probably true, but bear in mind they've had had no long spells out of the top flight in the last 50 years, so the loyalty of their fanbase hasn't really been tested.

Southampton - about equal (though our away support has been slightly better this season)

Forest - in the current century we've been a much bigger club. The European Cup wins are generations ago now. More recently they've been regularly stuffed in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, which their fans are curiously slow to mention.

Derby - about equal, they have slightly better home support, we have far bigger away support.

Fanbase, history and current position... I think Manchester United and Liverpool are the biggest in the Country, but I also see the likes of Everton as a big club.

I'd say West Ham are the biggest in our division, and then Leeds, who I think have the best following. Leeds fill every away end whenever and wherever.

And thats it for me in our division. Forest have good history, but like most clubs in our division, have won nothing for years. There has been a vast amount of changes though, such as, Burnleys following used to be very good but now it isn't.

History and fanbase. No way for example are Wigan a bigger club than us because they're higher up than us.

I agree.

I wonder if youngsters today see the likes of Leeds and Forest as big clubs though? I mean Forest were conquering Europe before I was born and remained a big name for a few years after but kids today surely wont be aware of this.

In fact, kids probably think Blackpool and Hull are bigger than Forest and Leeds because those teams have featured in the Premier League recently.

I've put Forest and Derby above Leicester because of their respective histories. Our 3 home/away attendance figures combined would all be pretty similar but obviously we've never endured the success they have.

Self-importance of the fans involved in the discussion is the single biggest criterion for determining the relative "bigness" of clubs. It's such a subjective, stupid argument.

History, fanbase & current position.

I don't really think fanbase. Look at Blackpool for example they have a great history and are doing extremely well at present but would never be able to pull a 30/40,000 crowd because of where their situated.

I don't get the Southampton love in, I don't think they are a big club. They won the FA Cup once, finished runners up three times and runners up in the League Cup. That's about it in terms of major trophies.

Like I said before, I see West Ham and Leeds as the biggest clubs, with Forest behind (they do have a great history), and then that's it for me.

Agree.
