I wasn't one to target Wellens before, but when he is back to fitness I still don't want him near the first team, I think we now have three CMs better than him, and two wingers who would do a better job at CM than him. Sorry Richie, thanks for everything but time to move on I think.

The suggestion is that Wellens plays in the attacking midfield role currently occupied by Knockeart, and we know from last season that this is Marshall's best position too.

Both players drop into space and demand the ball when we are in possession in defence, something Wellens has never really tried to do.

His lack of energy and reluctance to track back would make him a liability..... :(

Leave Wellens alone you cads!

If he can get fit he'll have a role to play this season.

Love as in respect innit...

Never understood the Wellens hate. He always gave his all on the pitch and he is a good Championship player..

Totally agree with this. Last season he was poor, as was every other player, but overall has been a good signing for us, and one of the best signing's made by Nigel Pearson. Hope he get's back to match fitness.

And maybe the shortcomings were more to do with the supporting cast than with Wellens.

I've no desire to try and blame him entirely but this idea of having Wellens as our attacking midfield fulcrum has always been flawed and even more so now Knockaert and Marshall are options and Kingy is playing properly and freely again.

There are three or four serious limitations with Wellens and the years going by won't help any one of them. I'll try to put them in order of importance.

a) He doesn't score enough goals or even try to score very often. We have to score around two goals a game to stay with the pace and that means goals from more than just our centre-forwards. Wellens just doesn't do that.

b) He takes too long to pass the ball. With today's fitter and better organised defences the ball has to move quickly. We've more players to do that now and that, in turn, encourages those around them to make the necessary runs.

c) Wellens doesn't play one-twos very often but prefers to spray the ball out wide. Why? Not because he lacks the capability of delivering such a pass but because it demands further, fast and immediate action in going for the return. And that leads me to point four ...

d) By his own admission he can no longer do the training necessary to play a lot of one-twos and to maintain the all-round edge needed to be an outstanding central attacking pivot.

Wellens is a willing and skillful player but he's not good enough for the job here and I don't see him as a good enough defender or quick enough passer to command a place further back. When I look the collective way our team operates now i can't help but believe his time here seems passed.

He's perhaps still good enough for a mid-table side but I don't imagine him being happy here in what would be an occasional supporting role at the very best.

Wellens has joined Ipswich on loan for the next month. I was always on the fence re Wellens as I don't attend many games because of where I've lived since 2005 obviously. I've seen him have a mix of good, indifferent and poor games since his time at Leicester began in our campaign back in the Championship in 2009.....totally unlike our latest star Knockaert on current form of course who has just been sublime!

I'm still surprised the likes of Wellens and Gallagher have only been loaned out for a month though - so Pearson must still see them as worthwhile back up for when the winter months come and potential injuries may start to kick in.....or if Pearson feels that a shuffle of the pack may be required if the present starting 11 start to lose their way in the coming months for whatever reason, as can happen of course. That is probably why he's not sold them on altogether, although that wouldn't be possible to do next until January now I guess. I thought Wellens would've been sold in the last transfer window personally, despite his experience of course. Maybe it's that, that is keeping him at our club when just being loaned out for the short term, plus to gain some first team footie...........
