I've always thought the opposite. He has world class ability, but not a world class mentality. Whenever he's the main man he tends to disappear: see England or important Man U games without Ronaldo or RVP.

When he was the main man for Man U they didn't win anything. They won when RVP or Ronaldo were the figure head of the team.

But I do agree RVP takes away his goalscoring threat, but then I'd say that's cause RVP is better (until this season when he's quite clearly having a sulk).

The season before Van Persie came Rooney very much the main man... and he scored over like 35 goals or something..

I do see what you are saying, Rooney most natural in the second striker role but Rooney was fantastic in that season despite the team not winning anything...

Yeah but they didn't win anything or even get out of the group stages of the Champs League in a group which contained Benfica, Basel and some Romanian team. It's like he can turn it on against teams like West Ham, etc which push his stats up. But when it comes to do or die matches he's not as effective.

To help your argument they did win the Prem in 10-11 with him as sort of the main man but he didn't score as many goals (25/11) in the league; Berbatov (24/20) and Hernandez (15/13 - but a lot of extra sub appearances) scored most of them. I'd say that's the only year that counters my argument.

I do hope he has a good world cup and then is Man U's main striker next year with Mata behind him because I think he has the skill.

Two word that are derailing Arsenal's season, Mathieu Flamini. Not him because he's not good enough, it's him because of Wenger's seeming reluctance to play him in big games. He's they only player they have that's a truly defensive midfielder that can break up play and stop teams that will really attack them and press them, yet Wenger is refusing to start him in most games. A lot of their early season form is down to what he's brought to the team. He should have started today.

Money on Shearer saying "if that was <insert foreign country here> player we'd be talking about it for ages" about Rooney's goal.

Just watching the Arsenal game on MOTD.

Firstly, why was a red card given at all? What red card offence had been committed there?

Secondly, why on earth has the commentator likened it to the Rafael one against Liverpool? The two incidents weren't remotely similar.

Guess its deemed as handball on the line - does it matter if the ball appeared to be going wide?

Chamberlain would have not tried to do it if he thought that.

Surely Chamberlain's intention was to stop it going in, therefore technically denying a goalscoring opportunity?

Why? The ball is going out of play. No goalscoring opportunity was denied by Oxlade-Chamberlain's handball.

Law 12 states (with regard to handball):

"a player is sent off if he prevents a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball. This punishment arises not from the act of the player deliberately handling the ball but from the unacceptable and unfair intervention that prevented a goal being scored" [my emphasis]

Its a tough one as there isn't really a direct law for this situation, I would say red as he thought it was going in and thus deliberately prevented what he thought would be a goal.

I'd think we would all be screaming for a red card if it happened against us...
