Ashes 2013

This is definitely one of the highlights in the Sydney Morning Herald comments section.

"Smith is a bowling all-rounder that should be batting at 7 or 8. If he's not going to bowl 20 overs then he should not be in the team. The poms hate playing leg-spin, especially Bell, Clarke's refusal to bowl Smith was the difference between winning and losing the series."

I know we get some absolute dross written on this forum, but that's beyond priceless. My sister could bowl better leg spin than Smith.

That's the bit that got me. I'm glad I'd just been to the toilet otherwise I think I would have actually pissed myself.

Some of the sour grapes and whining on there are first class; make this place look relatively normal and balanced.

It's funny I was watching the Australian coverage of the ashes, and the question was posed to Ian Healy and Greg Chappell who is the best captain in world cricket? Both answered Michael Clarke by a long way with only MS Doni able to even run him close. Our own Ali Cook was not even worth a mention.

I know a lot of England supporters arnt happy with cook either but if you look at the facts:

Hasn't yet been captain for a year and won in India and won the Ashes, how many England Captains have done that? Vs Clarke 8 defeats in 9 tests including 4 in India and 3 in England, how many Australian captains have done that?

I think it depends what you want someone who is well respected and brings his team together liked by all and makes a plan before a test begins and sticks to it, or someone who is disliked by man if his fellow professionals and constantly changes his approach depending on what is happening.

One gets results the other doesn't.

Cook will only better and

I think it is too early to start putting Cook up their with the best, he hasn't been captain long enough to judge, winning in India was pretty special, but otherwise we have underperformed in NZ, beaten NZ here 2-0, but Cook got criticised for the late declaration, and won the Ashes against a pretty poor Australia. Cook didn't really do anything special, strange decision to put us into bat first at Trent Bridge, but generally has been solid if unimaginative. But then Clarke gets a lot of praise for imaginative captaincy, yet they keep on losing. Cook has been groomed for captaincy for a while, but it will take him time to put his stamp on the role, unlike Clarke, he has taken on full responsibility with Strauss retiring, whereas Clarke took over with Ponting still in the team so he had a lot more support.

The 0-0 is New Zealand can be put down to Swann for me, (although how we didn't lose 1-0 is now a mystery) he had them for breakfast usually and although it was important to get him fit for the ashes Monty Pissenar just isn't good enough as a front line spinner anymore.

Cook is nowhere near the best of course but he isn't going to be at his age, he's still going to be really learning and a brilliant point above is made that he is still learning the game and doesnt have a guy like Strauss on the pitch to learn more as Clarke did with Punter.

Still he's 12 unbeaten and that's pretty fair going.

People suggesting Cook not captaincy material.  lol  lol  lol

Love seeing people not normally interested in cricket getting stuck in to The Ashes but reactionary ****** like that really do make me laugh.

Shane Warne is also a disabled like me?

P.S. For your information I was at the Ashes test The Oval 1985 with my dad, and have been to a test match with him pretty much every year since.

So I'm hardly fair weather. Were you born in 1985?

How Aussies can criticise our captains when Ricky Ponting chose to bowl Marcus North with England 9 down on the final evening of a Test match is beyond me.

Cook has been in the job less than a year and is still finding his way.

With all due respect, Warne is a brilliant cricketer who commentates on Sky when he isn't playing poker. Andy Flower is in the dressing room and working with Cook all day, every day.

Where was Warne's comments when he kept Bresnan on to get the wicket of Warner, Warne was calling for Swann back but Cook persisted with Broad for the late afternoon, wasn't a bad decision that one was it 2 hours later?

Cook is 27, he's going to make mistakes, he has had a superb start though.

Putting a couple of players at short long off for a batsman or at silly point in the second over makes you unorthodox, it doesn't automatically make you a genius.

It is easier if you have the cattle, i do find myself raising my eyebrows at a few of cooks field placings. But when you have the batters to take wickets and the bowlers to take the wickets it can gloss over small errors.

For me Clarke is by far a much better captain than Punter but we just never make the runs to win the matches.

Really is. This an article where Shane Warne, chain smoking, binge drinking, womanising, drug taking, Shane Warne the man who danced on the balcony at lords with one of the stumps is criticising how the England players behaved after the games?? Haha anything he says after that has no relevance.

Very possible Finn comes back with it being at the Oval.

With Bresnan and Onions injured now I suspect Tremlett will get his chance for the 4th test?

I think you will be wrong! I also have still strange feeling that you will win the 4th test after a major batting collapse by the Aussies being 0-109 chasing 299 to win with Broad taking most of the wickets.......just a guess.

Yep 4th test, 1st test and wish it didn't rain in the 3rd.

Overall i think we have been more competitive than what i thought we would be.

Aussie batsmen playing for their place in a match against England A:

Cowan c Buttler b Plunkett 17 69 47 1 0 Warner st Buttler b Kerrigan 35 59 46 5 0 Hughes   b Barker 30 118 92 4 0 Watson c Plunkett b Harris 45 44 44 8 1 Smith   b Stokes 18 32 30 3 0 Khawaja c Buttler b Stokes 4 10 8 1 0

Not a half century there, so who will bat with Clarke and Rogers at the Oval?

Posted

He'll be opening soon at this rate, if they pick Agar for his batting then it would be ridiculous, I guess he probably isn't that much different to Steve Smith, but if they can't find a better number 6 in the whole of Australia then they really are in trouble.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Wade brought in as a batsman, Warner and Watson will play, but who do you pick as number 3? Or do you open with Watson and Rogers and play Warner at 3 Clarke 4 Wade 5 Agar 6?

Cowan, Khawaja, Smith and Hughes have all looked poor with the bat.
