All managers care about is results and team performance. If I'm a manager and the guy in charge of financials at the club says "We can do the deal to sign X (who was my first choice to sign) you think I'm gonna turn around and say "hang on a minute, great news that you've got the deal sorted but how much are we paying him? Because I think he shouldn't be on more than £15,000 a week"? "Actually maybe we should go for my 2nd choice because he's cheaper". The manager is judged by how the team performs and results, managers aren't in charge of clubs finances, in the modern era often they aren't in a job long enough to even comprehend caring about finances.

And if you need to sign 4 players in 4 positions, but spunking all your money on player one who is top of your list in one position means you can't get any more in.

But getting in no.3 on your list lets you get in two others because he's cheaper. You think the manager isn't there to make those decisions or isn't interested?

That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever read. It's not a video game, when have you ever known in professional football for 16 new players to come in all in the same 4 positions? Even under Sven the club didn't bring that many players from the same position in and look how ridiculous the club looked in the media at the time. That is what the loan market is for and again bringing youth through academies. Look at the team's current situation, everyone knows we need a CB and the club will be doing exactly as I have said working through a list of targets that Pearson's scouting department, coaches and himself have compiled. It's up to the Director of Football to get the best player for Pearson whilst working within a budget. Manager's care about team performances, results and keeping the squad happy and in check. They don't get swamped down with contract discussions, transfer fees etc. They don't have the time to be in charge of a squad of players and everything that comes with that as well as all the stuff you think a manager does. 20 years ago maybe but not in modern football. Business is business hence why business people are in charge of the financial side of the club and the manager is in charge of the football.

Edit: Just realised you meant 1 player in 4 different positions. The Director of Football knows that the manager wants 4 new players so he's not going to spend all the money on 1 player is he because he's not done his job! He needs to bring in 4 players and he will bring the best 4 players in that he can within budget. That is what a Director of Football does brings in the managers targets whilst working in the clubs budget.

Great News means we can recruit the best young talented players in the Midlands Region and beyond.

How about Derby and Forest, in particular (are they category 1's, or below us)?

The best thing about this is it means we can't have our best kids poached. Hull City lost one of the best products to another Prem club for £75k recently.

Sums up what a corrupt system it is.

It's good for Leicester don't get me wrong, but the whole system just reeks of corruption and my opinion on EPPP doesn't change just because my own club has benefitted from it.

Step forward for Leicester, step backwards for English football.

Everyone knows a manager wouldn't get bogged down with actual contract discussions themselves, they still select target within resources available and make hard decisions about who to go for based on their price, wages & how that balances with their worth to us... eg. (a topical example, that may come to pass) Selling a £2m+ goalkeeper to buy-in a replacement keeper, a CB & a LB all within the fee received and wages saved

Sven wouldn't know how to manage normally if it him in the face, after outspending the whole of Western Europe added together to buy Trophies in Italy for a quarter of a billion (even back then) etc, then obviously managing the best collection of England players all at the right age, for generations... to blowing £20m+ here on exorbitant loan fees, stupid wages, silly transfer fees & yet more stupid wages arriving with a team that never once troubled even 6th, never mind the top of the table.

Managers manage, and to manage is to make decisions... irrespective of the fact you're not the one sat face to face with an agent.

No they don't what you have just described is the exact role of a Director of Football. What do you think a Director of Football does? You think clubs hire two people to do the exact same job? English football at the elite level is near identical to the rest of Europe now thats why there was such a furore when the "Director of Football" role came to England in the first place. Managers choose players, DOF does the rest.

Well done City, important step for the future to be cat 1. Saves our good young academy players from being nicked cheaply and hopefully build team for the future.

Andrew Neville is not a Director of Football in a form that is anything like European DoF's or ones even in this country.

And back to the original point, everything you are saying backs up that Neville was just doing what he was asked.

At a guess I would say the 5 other teams who are cat 1 in the football league are Crewe, Derby, Birmingham, Leeds and Ipswich

It'll be the five richest sides. I'll go for Leicester, QPR, Bolton, Reading, Derby (who have been confirmed) & Forest.

You want to blame Sven for something, blame him for bringing in shit players that couldn't work together (albeit it some of them Nugent, Kasper etc), poor tactics, poor man management and poor results. You cannot blame him for financials, he gave them targets but he didn't set the budget nor did he take part in contract discussions or transfer fees. That was Andrew Neville.

Pretty sure managers and the financial guys work together on this. They don't hand a list over and say get them at all cost.

Sure there would also be a reccomendation or a request to ask the manager of what you would actually value the player at you are chasing, Andrew Neville he isn't going to pick up a list from Sven with a loads of names on it and then just bid £15million for Sol Bamba because that's what the other club demanded.

I'm sure Sven would of had a transfer budget of lets say 20million and get's a call from Neville.

"Do you want Mills, we can get him for 5million of what you've got" and then the manager gives his answer.
