Zoumana Bakayogo: Leicester City sign former Tranmere man

Leicester City have signed former Tranmere Rovers left-back Zoumana Bakayogo on a two-year-deal.

The 26-year-old, who came through the Paris St-Germain youth system, left Prenton Park this summer after rejecting the offer of a new contract.

The Ivorian made 146 appearances in all competitions for Tranmere in a four-year spell at the League One club.

"This is a big club and a big challenge for me, stepping up into the Championship," Bakayogo said.

"I've taken the chance, I hope to have a good season this year and do well for the team.

"The Championship is a new league for me so I will have to work hard to catch up to the pace, but I'm looking forward to working with everyone," he told the Leicester website.

Bakayogo is Foxes boss Nigel Pearson's first signing of the summer and will provide competition for Paul Konchesky.

Leicester City Football Club has completed the signing of Ivorian defender Zoumana Bakayogo on a two-year contract, subject to Football League approval.
The 26-year-old full-back finalised personal terms and completed a medical on Monday, joining the Foxes as a free agent following a four-year spell with League 1 side Tranmere Rovers.

An athletically gifted left-back, blessed with great natural pace, Bakayogo established himself as one of League 1’s outstanding defenders during his time on the Wirral, combining solid defensive instincts with an adventurous attacking approach.

He becomes City manager Nigel Pearson’s first new signing of the summer.

Pearson said: “A number of clubs were interested in signing Zoumana this summer and we were one of those that had been monitoring him for a considerable period of time.

“I’m really pleased he’s chosen Leicester City. It’s important to us that we recruit players, not only with ability, but also with a desire to play for and work hard for this Football Club.

“He’s a good player with a great attitude and I’m sure he’ll fit in well with the current squad we have.â€

Born in Paris in 1986, Bakayogo began his career as a youngster with Paris Saint Germain, before moving to London in 2006 to join Millwall. He spent two and a half years at The Den and made 22 appearances for the south-east London club, several alongside Foxes defender Zak Whitbread.

He joined Tranmere in July 2009 and immediately established himself in the first team, making 34 appearances in his debut season. He would go on to play nearly 150 games for Rovers, including 52 in his final season, in which he also weighed in with five goals.

Nice.

I'm not going to put a downer on it when I've never seen him play. Obviously good enough at League One level, so lets see what he can do here. Pleased we've got another left full back as well, whether it's as cover or a replacement for Konchesky.

Good point, also should free up Jeff to play a more advanced role, let's see what he is made of.

By the way how is his name pronounced? is it back-a-yo-go?

Happy to just see some change ..... but will wait til i see him play .... He's not quite the young and hungry, more unproven and possibly slightly peckish!!!

1/10 on that Youngy and 50% of fans calls him Bakayoko all season after the ex-Everton and Championship Manager great Ibrahima.

I'm quite excited, it's probably because I'm surprised we have actually signed someone. Heard he was very good for Tranmere last year and I hope he can do some good performances here. Free agent and can't be on a lot seems quite good. I hope this means Konch is on his way.

On Radio Leicester Moore his previous manager said his only weekness was defending  me thinks this might be a problem for a LB!!

This is the calibre of player you would expect the Burnley, Barnsley and Doncaster's of this world would be making. How sad that this is now our level.

It's not like we have never signed lower league players who have turned out to be quite good before is it?

Matt Elliott, Robbie Savage, Neil Lennon, Steve Walsh do I need to go on? All signed from lower league clubs all club legends in premier league city teams and there are many more...

If it does turn out that we're playing 3-5-2, then it's quite possible he won't need to be back defending as much, and will be used as a LWB instead? I'd be happy if Konchesky moved into the middle as a LCB with Bakayogo/Schlupp/Dyer playing the more advanced role and covering.

This signing points even more to 3-5-2. He's good at attacking from deep, absolutely rapid, great stamina and better going forward than he is defensively. All equates to a perfect LWB.
