Fox92 Posted 25 July 2013 Posted 25 July 2013 http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jul/25/santiago-train-crash-spain-mourning The Spanish government has decreed three days of official mourning after Wednesday's train crash near Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, which left at least 78 people dead and 130 injured, 20 of them seriously Just posting, RIP. Looks terrible, well have a look for yourself on the video. Driver in for investigation.
Dan Posted 25 July 2013 Posted 25 July 2013 Driver's fault. Doing 190 on an 80 bend? Complete idiot and deserves everything he gets. RIP.
ADK Posted 25 July 2013 Posted 25 July 2013 It's not necessarily just the drivers fault, there are supposed to be safety systems to stop this sort of thing happening.
Carl the Llama Posted 25 July 2013 Posted 25 July 2013 I hate how these tragedy stories are always accompanied with the number of Brits or Americans involved. Fine if you're providing a break down of every single nationality represented, but don't single out specific ones as if it makes it more tragic that an innocent Brit was involved.
ADK Posted 25 July 2013 Posted 25 July 2013 It's of more relevance to britain though, i can see why they do it.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 25 July 2013 Posted 25 July 2013 Dreadful. Last I heard was 78 dead, 20 critical, and most of the remainder injured. We can't blame the driver without an investigation. It has been suggested the speedo was at fault. The driver could have collapsed, etc. Whatever caused it, may the victims rest in peace.

I don't see how the speedo can have been at fault if the driver knew he was going at 190: According to El PaÃs, he said over the radio while still trapped in his cab: "I was doing 190. I hope no one's been killed because they'll be on my conscience."
The Year Of The Fox Posted 25 July 2013 Posted 25 July 2013 Shocking if he's broken the speed limit by that extent. Ronaldo has flown out to try and give blood apparently. RIP
VinceNoir Posted 25 July 2013 Posted 25 July 2013 Saw a video of the crash earlier, it looked absolutely horrific RIP
pSinatra Posted 25 July 2013 Posted 25 July 2013 The driver (or his co-driver) made a call to the control centre seconds before the crash. He told them he was going too fast & that he thought they were going to derail. It doesn't sound like the driver's fault. Makes me wonder why he wasn't able to override & stop the train somehow? Terrible for anyone involved http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/spain/10202008/Spain-train-crash-Driver-Im-at-190-kmph-and-were-going-to-derail.html
Bayfox Posted 25 July 2013 Posted 25 July 2013 the video on sky from the cctv makes it look like its shifting. clearly to fast for the bend. but strangely the engine makes it round the bend. it's the 1st carridge that leaves the tracks. followed by all behind it. one ends up 40/50 feet up the embankment. seems either the driver is at fault or there has been a major fault in a safety system.

British media reports on British involvement. Nothing wrong with that whatsoever you PC nonce. RIP victims.
Jon the Hat Posted 25 July 2013 Posted 25 July 2013 A terrible tragedy. We put our trust in the technology and the drivers, and very occasionally they let us down with tragic consequences.
Captain... Posted 26 July 2013 Posted 26 July 2013 I'm actually out in Galicia at the moment, the atmosphere is very strange because it is the period of festivals and parties here, but obviously this tragedy has put a bit of a dampner on things. I was actually trying to convince my missus to go to Santiago on Wednesday as they were having a big fireworks display and celebration. But she said it was too crowded and we wouldn't see anything, so we stayed in her village. As for the blame, the track is actually part of the high speed rail network so braking only kicks in automatically if the train is going over 200kmh but this wasn't a high speed train, as to why the driver didn't slow down himself nobody can explain, he has 30 years experience and has been driving that route for over a year. He has now been formally charged so we will see.

Captain... Posted 26 July 2013 Posted 26 July 2013 You're alive!!!! Perhaps not the most appropriate thread for that comment, but yeah I'm alive. I got logged out on my phone and didn't see a thread worth the effort required of logging in to comment on.

I'm genuinely pleased to hear you're alright.

pSinatra Posted 26 July 2013 Posted 26 July 2013 Just heard on 6pm news driver is under arrest and is under investigation, Train was at twice the speed limit and would appear the driver knew it ....... RIP to all those killed The Telegraph article didn't read like it was driver fault - that he was on a runaway train. I read a Daily Mail article the same day where they referred to the driver taking photos of the train's speedo & posting them on twitter, but the twitter pics were not taken on the day of the accident. If the driver was at fault, what's he doing on the telephone.........hit the fvcking brakes!!
