Tom Daley Comes Out

Basically this.

The fact it gets a news story each time makes it more of an issue than it actually is.

I'd guess lots of people "come out" every day but they don't have it as breaking news headlines.

As many people have stated it's just confirming what most of us thought we knew anyway, give it a few days all the jokes a furore around it will have died down.

This will never happen in English football. Imagine the player, playing away at a backwards club such as Millwall or Leeds and having 2,000+ singing "you take it up the arse".

If I was a footballer and I could make Leeds and Millwall fans hate me, I'd jump at the opportunity.

Don't see why he should need to come out anyway. He's gay. So what.

Unfortunately, being in the public eye means he has to come out publicly. If he doesn't, the tabloids will run a story about Tom Daley's 'secret gay sex shame' even if there's nothing secret or shameful about it.

Plus for most gay/bisexual people, coming out is a massive milestone for them and is a sign of self-acceptance.

'Coming out' probably does happen every day, but it makes the headlines because of who it is. I mean, people cheat on their husband/wife on a daily basis but when Rooney or Giggs does it, it makes the news. Because of who they are.

(Some) people read news to keep interested in people's lives. 'Oh he come out', 'did you see what she said', 'they cheated on their other half' etc.

Why Millwall and Leeds? ... Last time I went to Millwall away, last season, we spent a good 20 minutes talking football with two nice Millwall fans at the train station. Not everyone is the same.

I'm afraid a footballer would get abuse wherever he went, not just those two clubs. Just like players with long hair get 'tramp' and certain players get 'abuse'. I know these are separate and different examples but ultimately they still single a player out.

Because Leeds and Millwall are known for having some of the most racist, homophobic and general all round BinHead fans. My mate is a Brighton fan and he said when Leeds play at their place, it's constant homophobic chanting for 90 minutes occasionally interspersed with the imaginative "we all love Leeds".

I suppose it will make his life easier, no questions will be asked by reporters, no cameras trying to catch him out, it's public knowledge and won't be an issue in the future.

I await  the day a 'big celebrity' comes out and this discussion doesn't take place. Then we'll know we've made a bit of progress.

I don't think he mentioned who his boyfriend is, gives the gutter press an excuse to drag this story out.

Steriotypes are usually right though and I wasnt suprised to hear this news. Do you think Tom is a giver or a taker?

He's a giver. I've heard his boyfriend marks him out of 10 for his entry.

The Guardian can be very annoying with its right-on attitude. However, I'm not sure they did anything wrong here. At the time (Sept), in the face of speculation, he was denying that he was gay. Should they have outed a 19-year-old, even if they had evidence that he wasn't being fully truthful? Where a mature adult is telling such untruths to abuse a position of responsibility, there's a case for outing, but not with a teenage sportsman....it's up to him whom he tells and when, surely? Anyway, the main point of the article seems to be that neither straights nor gays fit one "stereotype"....which is true.

From your comments, you seem to be straight. The same applies to me. If either or both of us was a secret member of the Village People [photoshopping opportunity alert!], would that be anyone's business but our own?! In all seriousness, I faced some of this crap when I was a teenager - people speculating/insinuating that I was gay (even though I wasn't) and it was distressing and confusing.....maybe you just didn't face such problems as you weren't pretty enough, Matt!   I don't face such problems myself these days, now that I'm a fat, ugly, booze-addled old git!  lol

Also, as Kingfox correctly points out, Daley seems to be saying not that he's gay, but that he's bisexual and in a gay relationship (there's a phrase you don't often read: "as Kingfox correctly points out"!). Good luck to Tom - and may God (or Darwin) bless us one and all....it's nearly Christmas!

Right on attitude is annoying but to continue on with the "we're more educated than you" attitude when you are consistently proved wrong about everything from economics to homosexuality takes some doing. They'll pull it off though. No pun intended.

Should they have outed him? No. Should they produce a huge document saying anyone who thinks he's gay is wrong? No. Most of us live in the Real World and it was obvious from a very young age he liked a bit of back door boogying.

Don't understand why you have had a go at me for the highlighted bit, I couldn't care less what he is and the sooner it's not an issue for anyone to come out the better. I have the right to laugh at anybody who was genuinely surprised by the news though for someone as obvious as this.

I've had more than my fair share of attention as well from the male sex, I'm what they class as "one of the bears" from the limited time I have spent in gay bars, not to mention some very unwanted attention in a previous job, had a woman recieved some of the stuff I got they bloke would have been in court rather than it treated as a "bit of fun" because the perpetrator was gay.

If he wants to say he's bi then fine, but I have a feeling you'll have more chance of seeing me writing a column for the Morning Star than Tom Daley going muff diving anytime in his life.

Because the new series of splash is on telly soon and he needs to whip up some interest.

Dating a 40 year old, can't stop smashing the stereotypes these guys.
