Kitchandro Posted 18 May 2014 Posted 18 May 2014 What are we classing as british? From our run in. Kasper dane Rdl belguim Schlupp ghana Wes Jamaica Wasyl poland Knocky french marhez algeria wood Australia so thats dd james vardy nugent and moore. it's very subjective. would we really care if we were top 4? It's not subjective apart from maybe Wes, who's as English as they come in reality. Schlupp as well actually. It's just common sense. Sure we've got more foreigners than Brits by the looks of it but our spine is quite English - the 2 strikers, the 2 centre mids and the 2 centre backs (who were first choice until Moore's injury). So I'd say we have a good mix. We've got a lot of good English players at the minute but I expect our number of them to go down if we progress as a team. Like it or lump it but England don't develop as many quality players as foreign sides do and whilst quality English players are overpriced, as well as pretty rare (compared to other countries), then it's no wonder the league is full of foreign players. 32% of the Premier League is English. Under a third. That is the kind of stat I'd expect of a league like Qatar. If Southampton is the model their key players are English, I'd say their foreign centre backs are their weak link, I do not rate that Fonte at all. The top teams have less English players in but for the level we're aiming for there are plenty of English/British players in Premiership teams, Newcastle are an exception for the also rans.
Danizen Posted 18 May 2014 Posted 18 May 2014 For me, being British or English doesn't matter. Knockaert has a great attitude, works hard and seems to really enjoy playing here. If we had a squad full of players like him, I wouldn't give it a second thought.
themotivator Posted 18 May 2014 Posted 18 May 2014 I guess it depends on your political persuasion.Personally being English/British isn't as high on my priority list as having players who have a strong relationship with the club. That could be by way Liam Moore, playing for his local team or Muzzy coming from London with Turkish heritage.Id say players like Knocky, getting over his watford penalty drama, and Vardy with his re-birth have the potential to become a part of the clubs history in a similar way.I'm speculating of course, they could sod off in a years time, but I'm kind of trying to point out that Its not important where you come from.
Dr The Singh Posted 18 May 2014 Posted 18 May 2014 For a small town in Pakistan, we don't seem to have many Pakistanis play for us
ceredigion Posted 18 May 2014 Posted 18 May 2014 Home grown players are always better. The Premier League began in 1992/93 so now supporters under 30 won't have any memories of football when it was Divisions 1,2,3 and 4 and foreign players were thin on the ground. Once foreign players become a majority in the team, I think there will be a problem. No common language to start with. Also it is undeniable that before the advent of the Premier League and the influx of foreign players, going to watch live football was much more affordable for most people. If you pay the players more in a week than most fans earn in a year there'll be problems. The KP might be sold out every game next season but that will also mean a huge amount of money leaving the Leicestershire economy and going elsewhere. It won't be recycled back into the local economy by the players and owners.

The top teams have less English players in but for the level we're aiming for there are plenty of English/British players in Premiership teams, Newcastle are an exception for the also rans. And what about when Southampton's spine is as usual ripped out of them this summer? I think Southampton are very much the exception here, rather than Newcastle. I think it's less than that I would say more like 20% The reason countries like Germany and Spain who have successful national sides is because 60% of there players are from there own nations plus there leagues help out as much to the national team, where by ours the premier league want to keep separate to the national team as much as possible. 32% is the figure I heard, I'm sure it was. Spain have 60% playing in their own league because they're better players and don't have to rely on imports from Spain (lets say England for arguments sake), France etc... Top flight English clubs are too reluctant to use youth players and there aren't enough of them that are of a high quality. These are both problems and that's why the percentage is so pathetically low.
LCFC31 Posted 18 May 2014 Posted 18 May 2014 I think Jace is staging a silent protest about the mods for removing the 'Real Developments' thread. Also, am I the only person who noticed it says Julian Lescott in the original post?
fox_47 Posted 18 May 2014 Posted 18 May 2014 Wood has a British passport (dual nationality) as his mother is English, so would he count as an overseas player because he plays for New Zealand?
