Blackpool cancel pre season trip to spain

I post on another forum upon which a Blackpool fan who is in some way involved with the club posts. I'll post his account of the events leading to this.

 

Ok, here goes...

The club is struggling financially. Owen Oyston buys the club. Puts some money in. Positivity returns again, even if results don't match it. Owen gets arrested for rape (not surprising; his best mates are Stuart Hall and Viva Ken Barlow). Owen starts chucking money around and promises a flash new stadium. Gets sent down for rape.

His wife Vicki (who he divorced but has since remarried) takes over and sacks Sam Allardyce for failing to win promotion. The fans kick off and protest. Someone spits at Vicky and she resigns leaving their son Karl to take over. Karl hates football, but loves money.

Karl does everything on the cheap. Despite that, we have some success under Steve McMahon. He resigns after falling out with KO and we appoint Colin Hendry. Hendry turns out to be shit and eventually gets potted for Simon Grayson. Grayson keeps us up and gets the gig full time. That summer Latvian Valeri Belokon buys 20% of the club. Gives Grayson money to spend and puts the money in to build the South Stand. We start badly but end up getting promoted. Grayson then keeps us in The Championship by hook or by crook until Leeds come calling.

Tony Parkes (Grayson's assistant) gets made caretaker manager until the end of the season and keeps us up. Gets offered the job full time on a pittance of a salary. Says no. Oyston says in local press that it's because his wife's dying. Parkes goes mental.

Alan Knill's about to be appointed when Ian Holloway talks himself into an interview (KO having refused to deal with his agent initially). Karl turns up late for the interview and not wearing a suit (Ollie was). Ollie goes beserk, but impresses Karl and gets the job. Karl refuses to give him anything to spend, so Ollie flies out to Latvia and begs Belokon to give him money. As a result we sign Charlie Adam for £500,000 and he fires us to promotion with 20+ goals. The club receives a guaranteed £90 million for promotion.

Oyston refuses to sign anyone until 48 hours before the Wigan game on the opening day, citing greedy players and agents. We eventually make a flurry of signings and thump Wigan 4-0 to go top of the league. However, the game was played at the DW and not at home (as originally scheduled) because our ground is not fit for purpose (the PL force us to upgrade our temporary stand amongst other things). By New Year we have 28 points and are 8th in the league.

We don't have a good January transfer window and have a flurry of games called off due to bad weather, so the fixtures build up. KO refuses to buy covers for the pitch, so we borrow them off our non league neighbours Fleetwood. We have a shit second half to the season and go down on the final day. Charlie Adam is sold for c.£9 million and DJ Campbell is sold for £1 million+. David Vaughan leaves on a free (travesty).

Next season we undeservedly lose the playoff final to West Ham. Ollie leaves soon after after a breakdown in relationship with KO who offers to 'drive him to another club' himself. Ollie joins Palace and gets them promoted in his first season (before having a breakdown). Michael Appleton gets the gig. Falls out with KO over transfer budget and leaves for Blackburn after less than two months in charge. Nigh on a dozen managers turn the job down so KO gives the job to Paul Ince purely on the basis that he's seen all of our games over the past 18 months due to watching his son so is familiar with the club (he's not even interviewed). Matt Phillips is sold for £7 million.

Paul Ince is dreadful. Despite that, we top the table going into the September international break. From there, it's downhill and we go on an incredible losing streak. Fans protest about Ince's negative football and he has a pop at us in the press saying that if we were to attack teams 'we would have our pants pulled down'. KO dithers about firing him but does so eventually along with all coaches at the club.

Barry Ferguson gets the gig until the end of the season. Doesn't know what he's doing but we somehow stay up. Mass protests from the fans, including stopping the Burnley game (the same game where one of Fergie's assistants lamps Stephen Dobbie). Ferguson doesn't get the job and there's a massive clear-out with KO saying he's reinvigorated and we'll have a new manager in 7-10 days.

A month later we appoint Riga (probably a good appointment). He does one media interview then refuses to talk to the press (he's still not spoken to them). Tony McMahon (gaffe prone) signs a new deal, but there's no other news really apart from players leaving us (Gilks to Burnley (having been offered a new deal with us by text), McGahey to Sheffield Utd (having been offered less than £200 a week), Ince to Hull etc). We sign some Estonian fella on a free who takes squad number 20 despite 1-11 more or less being free. Riga appoints his backroom staff but there's a hitch and they don't sign contracts and are currently working for free. Start of pre-season gets cancelled due to lack of numbers, but eventually gets underway as per the picture above. We arrange one friendly v Burnley but don't arrange any others. Riga organises a warm weather training camp but it is postponed due to lack of numbers. 32 days to go until the start of the season and we have 8 players (no keeper). KO says in press today he's not worried. Fans start claiming refunds on their season tickets and organising next round of protests.

Meanwhile, a look at the club's accounts tells you that the Oystons have extracted £30 million plus of the £90 million out of the club. Much of it is propping up their other companies. Indeed, their own auditor warns that there is little chance of the club ever seeing the money again. The accounts also say that being in the Championship is not a financial risk to the profitability of the Oystons, which sums it up really.

KO pays his dad a salary of £11 million for the year we are in the PL. He justifies this in the press by saying 'So what?'. He appoints us son as the manager of the hotel and his daughter as Head of Youth. In the meantime, the bare minimum is done to keep the club/ground operational (including only replacing the pitch when the league force us too), there is little investment in players/coaches and no investment in a new training ground despite it being promised years ago (it's literally a portacabin with some grass behind... when the weather's bad we have to either a) cancel training or b) train at a local school/the YMCA). A well known figure in football remarks that Bloomfield Road 'is like a brothel', referring to Owen's behaviour.

There is no tangible legacy from the Premier League. We are probably worse off for having been there as the Oystons have stripped us of every asset. They've even split the ownership of the club from the ground so we're screwed in that regard longer term.

Sorry that's so long... could go on, but hopefully gives a picture of things. I don't go any more, didn't renew my season ticket when Ince took over. Still go to the odd game, but mainly to see mates. Such a sorry state of affairs.

Anyone know who the 8 trialists were today?

 

I heard Ben Alnwick, Nathan Delfeouenso, and Faris Haroun

 

Nathan Delfouneso, Faris Haroun, Elliott Grandin, Martin Cranie, Jacob Mellis and Angel Martinez and former Tottenham goalkeeper Ben Alnwick are believed to be among the trialists.

Haven't most / all of those already played for Blackpool at some point? What a mess.

Delfouneso, Grandin, Haroun and Martinez have I think.

Yet he still convinced a manager to join a club with 8 players, no keeper, an owner who won't spend money and where fans throw tennis balls on the pitch.

 

And it's more attractive than Charlton lol

Very sad situation, hate seeing clubs being destroyed this way by greedy cvnt owners. Makes you realise how lucky we've been with ours. Riga potentially leaving after 5 weeks shows what a mess it is. Hmmm I wonder if they'll ask GTF to come back as player manager, wouldn't surprise me.
