Haydos Posted 18 August 2014 Posted 18 August 2014 Why? Avoiding aspartame not the leg chopping off. It can cause a spike in your blood sugar as it tricks your body into thinking it's having sugar when it's actually not - this will make you hungry, so it can be counter-productive to drink/eat products with Aspartame or other artificial sweeteners if you're trying to lose weight. TBH though, this will only happen if you drink a significant amount of stuff like Diet Coke though, and drinking Diet Coke is much better for weight loss than drinking full sugar Coke, for obvious reasons. I would suggest sticking to water if someone is serious about losing weight, but stuff like Diet Coke aren't bad options really. I haven't got time because I'm at work but if you have a look into it I'm pretty sure you'll find no peer reviewed articles that support your claim.

This is quite an interesting one: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/261179.php No definite proof that it does cause an insulin response, but there's enough anecdotal evidence out there to suggest that it may have some effect, but proving it will be difficult. I don't want to get into a whole debate, because it will derail the thread and that won't be fair to the OP, but in my experience if I've consumed 1-2 cans of Diet Coke on an empty stomach, it's definitely led to an increased appetite, more so than if I'd been drinking water. I actually work in the soft drinks industry and I personally think Aspartame and other sweeteners are totally fine and they can definitely help with weightloss, but at the end of the day there's no substitute for plain old water and if someone is serious about losing weight fast, I'd say drinking a lot more water and cutting out all the diet drinks would be a good contributing factor towards that.

Fair enough, it's been done to death anyway. It's one of those things that until it's proven has no effect I will give the benefit of the doubt to. There are lots of people that seem to have better success cutting soft drinks altogether but there are others that say they notice no difference. I just don't like the way it's used as kind of scare tactic and tossed around by some groups as fact. I BET there's a Daily Mail article on it

I BET there's a Daily Mail article on it Yep, I hate all the scare tactics and rumours around sweeteners, I spend so much time trying to debunk all the myths - articles like that in the Daily Fail don't help! I think it's about doing what's right for you in terms of your diet - some will get better results by cutting out the diet drinks, some will find that having a Diet Coke or Coke Zero lets you keep a little bit of a treat and keeps you on track. All about trial and error, I guess! Anyway, back on topic - I'm also going on holiday in 4 weeks and I want to shift at least a stone. Aiming for 1.5 stone loss by the time I go, so I'm going to practice what I preach and will let you all know the results...
NewburyFox Posted 18 August 2014 Posted 18 August 2014 Use the money you save on not drinking to hire a personal trainer for the month, despite what someone said above running is probably the worst exercise to do to lose weight you need a targeted weight loss exercise plan and having a PT will hopefully provide the motivation to stick to it. That'll be me I don't claim to be a personal trainer or an expert on weight loss, just from personal experience I've found running outside is the best way. It's intense, it's free, you can just run from home and it doesn't take up too much of your time. I guess hiring a personal trainer would be better as you get a specialised training programme but it's costly. Agree with everything else you said captain.
FoxLAD Posted 18 August 2014 Posted 18 August 2014 Try the insanity DVD. Heard its suppose to be quite effective.
Buzzell Posted 18 August 2014 Posted 18 August 2014 Ok, I'm opening myself up for ridicule and normal foxestalk shite, but....... Mrs BB has booked a hol for 4 weeks time, as I'm about 4 to 5 stone overweight, any ideas how I can lose it in the time mentioned? (Besides amputation!) Still got my speedos from the 80's but with the beer belly overhang I doubt you will be able to see them! Also with the flab if you can see them it might look like an elastic band All answers, serious (if any!) or ridicule accepted. So from beach whale to Adonis in 4 weeks pls Cut down on the Maccy D's fat boy.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 18 August 2014 Posted 18 August 2014 Do some core exercises. They won't burn a lot of fat, but will help you hold it all in a bit better. Worked for me

I guess hiring a personal trainer would be better as you get a specialised training programme but it's costly. Agree with everything else you said captain. Don't get me wrong, running is good exercise and running more will help you lose weight as you are more active, and as you said it is free and easy and doesn't take any specialist equipment, but just going out for a run isn't that intense as say interval training, it is better for maintaining your current weight and increasing stamina. The other problem is it is very easy to go for a run once a week and think you are making a big change, but unless he goes running for an hour every day for four weeks he isn't going to lose any weight and it is just as easy to stop running as start, whereas booking in sessions with a PT you will actually make time in your life to do it. The other change you can do is get into a better routine, eating at the same time every day plan what you are going to eat, and get a good nights sleep and getting up at the same time every day and not using food or sugary drinks/coffee to compensate for tiredness and give you energy boosts when you are flagging at work.
Ashley Posted 18 August 2014 Posted 18 August 2014 Clean/detox 9 it's expensive aloe Vera based diet/shakes but you can lose up to two stone in 9 days
Captain... Posted 18 August 2014 Posted 18 August 2014 Clean/detox 9 it's expensive aloe Vera based diet/shakes but you can lose up to two stone in 9 days Is that from first hand experience? I'm very sceptical about these things, and seen a lot if false info in adverts for these quick fix products.
Ashley Posted 18 August 2014 Posted 18 August 2014 Is that from first hand experience? I'm very sceptical about these things, and seen a lot if false info in adverts for these quick fix products. No but I know someone who done it and it seemed to have worked. I share your views believe me on other things like this.
Dr The Singh Posted 18 August 2014 Posted 18 August 2014 If that worked I'd only be 6 stones. So true!!!
Finnegan Posted 18 August 2014 Posted 18 August 2014 Nerd Fitness is pretty cool n'all but the guy's obsession with the Paleo Diet is a little bit irritating. To the point of outright pretentious. I mean, how many professional athletes does he think eat practically no grains or carbs? C'mon. Making out like you have to live like Tom and Barbara Good to be in shape is a bit misleading.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 18 August 2014 Posted 18 August 2014 I used to be a proper fat lad when I was 16/17 but managed to shed just over seven stone over the course of a year by playing five a side and not eating pies in bed. Losing weight really isn't rocket science. Eat better, excercise more.
Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 18 August 2014 Posted 18 August 2014 Clean/detox 9 it's expensive aloe Vera based diet/shakes but you can lose up to two stone in 9 days Got to be very careful with what is essentially starvation diets. I lost two stone in two weeks by just having fruit smoothies at lunch and dinner (probably 400 calories a day). I felt terrible and when I realised I couldn't maintain it I put all the weight back on in another 2 weeks.

Yeah, it annoys the crap out of me too, he acts like it's the only credible option. I think the workout side of the site is pretty good, but I more or less ignore all the diet stuff. I think because it's aimed at Americans with their fast/processed food culture they dumb it down quite a bit too, which annoys me. My Mrs does the Slimming World diet, which is a lot more balanced, and consequently I end up eating most of the same stuff as her a lot of the time and I find it works for me quite well.
Captain... Posted 19 August 2014 Posted 19 August 2014 Where does coffee fit into a healthy diet? Black coffee has bugger all calories, but gives you an energy/caffeine boost, is it a healthy alternative to sugary drinks, or even diet drinks with aspartame, or does it have drawbacks, other than caffeine addiction? At the OP if you start calorie counting it is amazing how quickly it all adds up, I'm on 1100 calories already after what I though was quite a healthy start to the day. Bowl of Fruit and Fibre, Orange Juice and a natural yoghurt for breakfast, Apple and a ham cheese and salad baguette for lunch, and a couple of biscuits with my coffee. Half my calorie intake done and I've not had a main meal or a drop of alcohol yet. That isn't even taking into account achieving a calorie deficit to lose weight.
