Danny Simpson

While I agree about needing higher calibre players I disagree that we need them all just yet. With a signing like this we are adding strength to depth, which is what we need first and foremost this season in case of injuries. Our first XI is more than good enough to compete. We just need the whole squad to be able to cope with injuries and rotation. Simpson fits the bill perfectly. We can't come up and suddenly expect to change 4,5 or 6 of our first team for an upgrade. It's just not the way we need to do things. It's about sustainable transition. Get a couple of squad players and a couple of real quality players, consolidate and stay up this year. Then push on the next and add upgrades. That's what's I think Nigel will do. Too many at once could cause a lot of problems. That said, I can't say we've added too many better players already!

totally agree and this is what I meant just. But I cant write an essay on my tablet, I think he is a good player and will fit in well

Wow we are desperate!

If you honestly believe this, then you clearly don't take any notice of anything our manager says. the clubs scouting network scouts players for months and years before signing them, do you honestly think that NP is going to risk his job and our prem status by just throwing random bids at players?

they'll have done their homework on this lad, and if he comes in, it'll be because NP believes he will improve the team. maybe backing his judgement might be worth a try.

I remember my Newcastle supporting mate always complaining that Simpson would just constantly back off and seemed too frightened to make challenges.

Need another right back though so wouldn't say no!

Can't have been that bad if he was first choice when they finished 5th

Wait, are they now going down because they're buying too many or because they're selling too many? Sounds like a weird one to be getting rid of though

they're going down because i dislike them.

but yeah, they're going down because this is what they do; get a somewhat settled squad and then get rid of half of it the season after. They're selling both full backs and it's common sense in football that you need to keep a settled defence. They're going to go into the end of august with a defence that hasnt played together and thats going to make for funny viewing

Very happy with this if wage demands are accepted by both parties.

RDL whilst good going forward is not very good in defence. Our RB won't be on the half way line like he was most of last year.

Simpson is a slight upgrade, not great but good enough and has plenty of Premier League experience.

On the flip side, with every signing we make I feel like I am losing that close bond with the squad of players that took us up, I know most are still there and I want us to sign players as much as the next person but it's a double edged sword.

Totally disagree. This player has never been mentioned on any radar - forums, club, twitter, rumours, manager interviews or any of the many other media outlets that cannot help but to 'leak' information. Suddenly we are 3 days to deadline and we have no defensive cover and Simpson suddenly becomes available - so were In for him. Smacks of let's get in whoever is available. I'm sure Redknapp would not sell to a relegation rival if he was that decent a player?!

I'm with the other posters that want players who have quality to 'improve' the squad now not just sit on the bench to push other players.

good defensive RB, we could use him as competition and cover for De Laet. Also think he will be better than De Laet when we face trickier wingers like Sterling, Hazard, Sanchez, Silva and co, whereas De Laet is better when we play weaker teams and are required to go forward.

Not a bad player and would fit in ok, if he joins as a squad player. Good competition rdl. Having said this I dont want to keep getting players that are as good as the ones we have we should be looking for better. With a fully fit squad we are lower half prem side. We need higher calibre players to improve

Rome wasn't built in a day. All fans would take lower half finish as long as it's. 17th or higher.

This season is all about surviving and strengthening the squad. Simpson does that as it gives good competition for RB now, which we didn't have last season.

All of NP's signings this summer have been clever, and all add to the squad, and improve positions that needed improving, without spending a fortune or disrupting the successful squad from last season.

If Simpson deal gets completed, a winger and one striker and possibly a CB would be more than enough. However NP mentioned he was looking at midfielder (Cambiasso) defender (Simpson) and striker.

So maybe if this deal is completed a striker is all he's looking for.

What a well constructed and insightful response. Many thanks for that.

PS.. I have read all the "scouting articles" as you put them and still zip on Simpson so at lest base your crude responses on fact. I thank you.

So what would you rather do, sign nobody?

Are we desperate for cover, yes of course we are there are only days left.

Does that mean he's not been thought about or scouted properly, no it doesn't.

Redknapp wouldn't let him go if he was good enough... Is this the same bloke who didn't rate Bale and wanted to flog him off for a couple of million?
