Mahrez -> Roma / Villarreal?

There's absolutely no way we're going to bring in a player whilst selling Mahrez who keeps us up, for five million.

How often do we ever get premium price for one of our assets? Mahrez is okay offensively but I wouldn't fret over his departure cos he's not a great defender and we can't afford the shortage of cover he leaves on occasions.

Three million, four million...who cares? We'll need to compete like lions to save being buried back in The Championship and I don't see Mahrez as being big enough or strong enough for the sort of sustained trench warfare where dogged 1-0.wins are greeted like cup-final triumphs

Get rid and bring in the footballing equivalent of the SAS. Calm but accomplished killers who can survive 89 minutes of any kind of pressure yet still deliver a fatal blow to take the points. .

Support, rather than any particular system, will matter most...the ability of all our players to offer support in defence or attack - and to concentrate while they're doing it.

We'll need attackers who can defend and defenders who attack. We can't keep playing with fundamental handicaps like an inability to score from free-kicks or without defenders and midfielders contributing a goal or two one way or another.

We've nothing to lose football wise because, apart from the first few games and a cameo or two thereafter, we've not really played much. .

Victories now would  be sweet in any footballing language. But first  we'll need to be tough throughout - in body and spirit. Tough enough to combat any opponent and fit enough to move back and forwards as a single unit. Mahrez won't be missed. In firework terms he's a Catherine wheel not a banger.

Well bugger me backwards with a pneumatic drill....

Let's sell Mahrez for peanuts and replace him with a player with great decision making, fantastic defensively and a creative genius.

"We need a player that battles" - Average but industrious players won't win us games but quality will. At the minute Mahrez is the only player who looks capable of winning us the game with his technical qualities.

Player being linked to other clubs and already 'well he hasn't really proven he is good enough' comments come out.

Mahrez is by far the most gifted player in our squad. Not many players in the world can beat an opposition player constantly and with the ease as which mahrez does.

Yes he has weaknesses defensively, so does Sterling at Liverpool....so maybe we should play him more centrally.

In our favour to is ACON smaller clubs wont want to know as they are buying a player they cant play for 6 weeks if done early.

So 2 or 3 big boys that could stand that could start a biding war.

Depends when we lose our bottle as to his worth.

Thrac, you say "we need attackers who can defend and defenders who can attack". But first of all, we need defenders who can defend! That's where our priority lies.

If we want to get rid of a player of Mahrez's ability then we might as well give up following football.

But he also looks like he is going to lose us every game every time he is needed to cover his full back...

We're not losing games because of Mahrez not tracking back

He is by FAR our most gifted player. Probably only one of 2/3 that are genuine premier league players in our squad.

At this stage i just wouldn't sell him. Come the end of the season if he wants to go and he's consistently played this well he'll be worth £10m+ without a doubt.

Precisely this. I really fear for us if we sell him

The way these things work when a big boy comes in pretty much always ends in losing the player.

Big boy comes in with a bid. Club dont like the bid, but the player in question knows of the link to the bigger club.

Player gets frustrated when club reject the bid. Says the club are holding him back, his head is turned, he becomes unhappy and starts giving the club very little in return. Puts in a transfer request, or starts chirping in the ear of the other players around the club, damaging the overall morale.

Smaller club dont want to keep annoyed player. So either try and sign him up to a bigger contract to match what he would get, bringing its own problems, or look to sell him.

Big club comes back, player leaves.

If you search 'Mahrez' on Twitter, he's picking up a lot of attention at the minute. I hope we hang on to him.

Was thinking about this thread earlier...didn't people say he's not worth more than £4 mill here? I'd be gutted if he went for twice that.

Posted

is he the best player to ever play for a team bottom of the league?

No that award would have to go to Lee Cattermole last season.

4 Million. lol

This is what infuriates me about football transfers, we're forced to pay 8 Million for a player with no top level record at all yet when it comes to selling we should let one of our better players go for pittance with no chance of replacing him unless we unearth another gem. Just because a bigger club want him. Load of shit, don't sell for less than 10, if the rest of the fcking footballing world has gone mad I don't see why we shouldn't as well.

If Wilfried Zaha went for 15 million or whatever it was without proving himself in the premier league and arguably in the championship too, I don't see why Mahrez should go for any less if does end up going.

Take the last four words out of that question and I'll get on board.

haha yes that's true.

i was being deadly serious though, i can't think of any player who's been this consistently good for a side who picked up 2 points in 13 games. can't work out if I'm delighted or distraught that people from other clubs etc are noticing how good he is now.
