Dan Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 You cannot argue with his record. Definition of solid but unspectacular.
Guest MattP Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 That player in front of the back four shielding is as important as most others on the pitch these days, I think we've been slow to realise that in England. Hammond does a great job at it andhe's an assured starter at the minute.
Banks Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 He does a good job but we could get better in doing the same - Jack Cork? Iis just too poor in possession for me to ever rate him. Jack Cork is a great shout.
shailen Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 its all about finding a balance in a team game. Hammond isnt our best midfielder but he is the best and sitting back and stopping attacks. Drinkwater and Cambiasso use the ball the best. King is good at those late runs and keeping the ball. Look at Arsenals midfield, probably one of the strongest in the world on paper. but they buy very similar players, in Ozil, Carzola, Wilshere, Rosicky...etc. Its never going to work.
Vicki Vixen Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 Saw him on SSN this morning and here is our record with and without him in PL With P10-W3-D4-L3- PTS-13 - PTS Per Game-1.3 Without P11-W1-D1-L9-PTS-4 - PTS Per Game-0.36 Always thought he was a decent pro but nothing spectacular, this would suggest he is a bit more influential than I thought. Good post. In many games this season we have conceded goals from open play, mainly through either i) being hit on the counter attack, ii) balls being half cleared by our defence and the opposition scoring off the scraps/rebounds, iii) runners not being tracked by our midfield. The common thing - Hammond was not on the pitch when these goals went in..... Newcastle (away) West Brom (admittedly this one was very unlucky) Southampton QPR Liverpool (home) Aston Villa (away) Man City Spurs Hammond's positioning is very good, especially when we don't have the ball. I agree he does slow things down going forward, but is this such a bad thing in the Premier League? It's important we have a player like Hammond slowing things down and keeping possession, because it is damn hard to get the ball back in this league.
AdamN Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 While he may not be the sole reason for that record, it does at least show that his inclusion in the team isn't some surefire road to defeat, as many seem to think when they see his name on the team sheet. I've yet to see the bloke have a genuinely bad game for us - he's an incredibly consistent, if unspectacular, performer. Some more stats: Out of our midfielders, Hammond has the highest amount of tackles (2.5), blocks (0.4) and interceptions (2.1, joint with Cambiasso) per game, and out of the whole team makes the second most amount of passes (39.9, behind Drinkwater on 46.4) with the third highest accuracy (81.7%, behind Drinkwater (81.8%) and King (86.1%)) so it's hard to argue that he isn't doing his job - getting the ball and recycling possession.
Ricey Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 Reads the game well and is an excellent tackler, but looks off the pace at times and gives the ball away sloppily. I think we benefit from having a player of his ilk in the side. I wouldn't class Cambiasso and Hammond as equal styles of midfieder, Cambiasso is much more attack minded.
5waller5 Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 What teams has that been against though? I like him, he's infinitely better than Richie Wellens Fixed. Personally I like DH, quietly effective.
Stadt Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 When you have two midfielders that push high up you'll get caught on the counter, Hammond prevents us from being wide open,
Lionator Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 I think he's extremely intelligent on the pitch too. He seems to read play very well.
st albans fox Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 I think he is vital in this league. It doesn't have to be him but it seems the other players either don't have the discipline to play where he does or Nigel changes tactics when he isn't in the side.
RUDZY Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 Deano is Meano top player and essential to the survival and rise up the table TOP 6 PLEASE
ealingfox Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 Hammond is better than Cambiasso ever was tbh.
funkyrobot Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 Hammond is the enforcer. He breaks up the opposition play and lays it off to the ball players. He looks more comfortable in the premier league than he ever did in the championship. He's been a surprise stand out player for me.
Buzzell Posted 15 January 2015 Posted 15 January 2015 And the most improved player award goes to..... **** I used to hate winning that award.
UpTheLeagueFox Posted 15 January 2015 Posted 15 January 2015 Cant argue against that record. He has made more of an impression on me this season that Drinky. If you told me that preseason I would have shit myself. You cannot argue with his record. Definition of solid but unspectacular. He's done a lot better than pretty much everyone expected. He deserves credit for that. Solid but unspectacular sums it up perfectly.
reynard Posted 15 January 2015 Posted 15 January 2015 He's done a lot better than pretty much everyone expected. He deserves credit for that. Solid but unspectacular sums it up perfectly. Exactly. Certainly surprised me. He seems a good pro and I'm glad for him he's had the chance to play in the Premier League as he didn't get the chance at Southampton.
Grewks Posted 15 January 2015 Posted 15 January 2015 Its his positioning which make it very hard for sides to get at us through the middle.
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 15 January 2015 Posted 15 January 2015 Saw him on SSN this morning and here is our record with and without him in PL With P10-W3-D4-L3- PTS-13 - PTS Per Game-1.3 Without P11-W1-D1-L9-PTS-4 - PTS Per Game-0.36 Always thought he was a decent pro but nothing spectacular, this would suggest he is a bit more influential than I thought. Dean or Elvis?
Jace Posted 15 January 2015 Posted 15 January 2015 We seem to play better with the majority of our reserves lets just play the reserve team?
Leeds Fox Posted 15 January 2015 Posted 15 January 2015 Before we can try and win a game, we have to get a foothold in the game, stop any attacks from the opposition, and then we can try and get a goal, hold the lead and counter. Hammond helps us massively in not going behind in games, and agaisnt 15 of the 20 sides, going into half time 'not losing', you can see us coming out with something from the game. Once you go behind in the Prem, you're very lucky to even get a point.
Foxmeister Posted 20 February 2015 Author Posted 20 February 2015 We're now at 4 pts from the 15 games he hasn't played and 13 from the 10 he has.
bovril Posted 20 February 2015 Posted 20 February 2015 These stats say less about the effectiveness of Hammond and more about how lacking in Premiership quality our squad is.
cc_star Posted 20 February 2015 Posted 20 February 2015 We're now at 4 pts from the 15 games he hasn't played and 13 from the 10 he has. With Hammond 1.3ppg Without Hammond 0.26ppg A defensive mid is a key position in the Prem, those players are usually unsung heroes but are essential in the modern game The fact our defence has received such poor cover from Cambiasso, King, Drinkwater & James means a defensive-minded midfielder is even more essential Would also like to see stats with & without Nugent... The team generally seems to play better & at a higher tempo with him than without him
