foxfanazer Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 I know some won't class Darts and Snooker as sport but lets include It here. Struggled to think of the best footballer of all time. Zidane, Messi or Ronaldo maybe
davieG Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 Carl Lewis had some great achievements in athletics and I'm fairly sure he'd have excelled at other sports if he'd have competed in them
foxfanazer Posted 21 February 2015 Author Posted 21 February 2015 Probably missed loads of obvious ones so apologies
Fox92 Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 I know some won't class Darts and Snooker as sport but lets include It here. Struggled to think of the best footballer of all time. Zidane, Messi or Ronaldo maybe Cruyff. And that's why I voted for "other".
foxfanazer Posted 21 February 2015 Author Posted 21 February 2015 Cruyff. And that's why I voted for "other".Yup. There's that Real Madrid player as well, Di Stefano I think.
ScouseFox Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 Depends what you class as best. In terms of achievements you can't knock AP or The Power. 20 consecutive years at being the best in your field and winning everything, 15 times champion of the world spanning over 20 years and still both arguably the best in their games as well as the best there ever was. Natural ability/skill over achievement and sheer willpower might be a different debate. Guess it also depends what sports you like . I think if forced Id probably go with AP from that list. Think being a jockey combines everything you need in a sportsman. Power and strength, skill and a tactical mind, bravery, dedication to the game and ability. Then add to that the way AP continually bounces back from broken bones, dislocations, concussion, near death experiences and gets back on the horse (literally) to still be the best. Some going.

Good post. Suppose I mean your favourite of the men that dominate/dominated their particular sport
foxfanazer Posted 21 February 2015 Author Posted 21 February 2015 Natural ability I'd have to say O'sullivan
ScouseFox Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 Good post. Suppose I mean your favourite of the men that dominate/dominated their particular sportyeah like I said it's tough to compare. people like Federer and Woods and Ronnie have pure skill and natural ability for their games, probably more so than Ali or McCoy, but in terms of training, dedication and exceptional achievement in their fields they're all legends aren't they really!

Absolutely mate. Although Federer had to work very hard as he didn't set the world alight straight away
leicsmac Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 Best all round sportsman ever? Jim Thorpe. Google and find out.
yorkie1999 Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 Muhammad Ali or AP McCoy, mainly because they're the only ones in that list who are true sportsmen, the rest play games.
Collymore Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 I'd have to say Michael Jordan for this. His name is probably the most globally recognised out of every sportsman, ever. I think Tiger would have been up there if it wasn't for his shenanigans off the course and the injuries. He's a mere mortal nowadays..
fleckneymike Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 Henry VIII hands down; top jouster, crown green bowler, hunter and real tennis player http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2009/may/03/henry-viii-exhibition-british-library
Amin Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 It's hard to compare athletes across all sports, but I would go for cyclist Eddy Merckx.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 Woods. His dominance was incredible. Probably the hardest sport out there too, requiring natural skill as well as mental robustness
ADK Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 Of sports I follow: Tennis : Federer Boxing : Mayweather Jr Football : Messi I follow F1 but couldn't name anyone stand out. Could be any of Schumacher, Alonso or Hamilton. I'm only going by people who've competed whilst I've been watching.
Strokes Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 Woods. His dominance was incredible. Probably the hardest sport out there too, requiring natural skill as well as mental robustnessGone off the boil since we signed him though.
purpleronnie Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 Totally forgot about F1 Most people do, hard to pick a recent driver as best sportsmen where the winner is bound to come from a works teams.
