Corky Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 Geoff Boycott's Mum is the best sportswoman, she could smash international bowling attacks around the park with a stick of rhubarb. Incredible talent.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 How is Don Bradman not on that list?! YEAH hes alright but don't like his commentary too much
Nalis Posted 22 February 2015 Posted 22 February 2015 I'd have to say Michael Jordan for this. His name is probably the most globally recognised out of every sportsman, ever. I think Tiger would have been up there if it wasn't for his shenanigans off the course and the injuries. He's a mere mortal nowadays.. Good call on Michael Jordan.I'd personally go for Usain Bolt.
isaidno Posted 22 February 2015 Posted 22 February 2015 No ones mentioned Valentino Rossi yet . 9 world titles and still winning races 20 years after his first win .
ozleicester Posted 23 February 2015 Posted 23 February 2015 Walter Lindrum - they changed the rules to stop him. Following his death, cricketing legend Sir Donald Bradman wrote to Lindrum's niece, Dolly Lindrum: "In my opinion he was not only the greatest billiards player who ever lived, but he was also the most modest of great champions." Mind you, its billiards, so not really a sport is it?
Jordan Posted 23 February 2015 Posted 23 February 2015 Best all round sportsman ever? Jim Thorpe. Google and find out. Absolutely.Bo Jackson.Bo Jackson was an almost freakishly good athlete but all of what he did put a lot of wear and tear on his body. Jackson was hobbled by a bad hip, and as that cut both his football and baseball careers short, he doesn't have a long enough list of achievements to be considered the greatest sportsman of all time.If women are to be included in a discussion about greatest athletes, then Babe Didrickson Zaharias would be in it.
leicsmac Posted 23 February 2015 Posted 23 February 2015 Maxwell Woosnam or C B Fry. Good shout - was probably the English equivalent of Thorpe at around the same time, excelling in many major sports.
Aus Fox Posted 23 February 2015 Posted 23 February 2015 Where would Sachin Tendulkar rate on the list of greatest ever?
Guest MattP Posted 23 February 2015 Posted 23 February 2015 Muhammed Ali ahead of Sugar Ray Robinson in the list? Behave! Don Bradman is the greatest for me, to be that far ahead of anyone in your field is phenomenal.
Finnegan Posted 23 February 2015 Posted 23 February 2015 Purely for being a physical freak, Usain Bolt.
Stevosevic Posted 23 February 2015 Posted 23 February 2015 Federer for me. Athlete and unbelievable skill.
Steven Posted 23 February 2015 Posted 23 February 2015 Muhammed Ali ahead of Sugar Ray Robinson in the list? Behave! Don Bradman is the greatest for me, to be that far ahead of anyone in your field is phenomenal. Babe Ruth?
Alf Bentley Posted 23 February 2015 Posted 23 February 2015 Following his death, cricketing legend Sir Donald Bradman wrote to Lindrum's niece, Dolly Lindrum: "In my opinion he was not only the greatest billiards player who ever lived, but he was also the most modest of great champions." Got to give the prize to Bradman. Surreal talent, writing to people after his death.
leicsmac Posted 23 February 2015 Posted 23 February 2015 Muhammed Ali ahead of Sugar Ray Robinson in the list? Behave! Don Bradman is the greatest for me, to be that far ahead of anyone in your field is phenomenal. Statistically, you're spot on. He's so much further in front of any of his peers its unreal. Though for me "sportsman" means multidisciplinary talent, hence my going for Jim Thorpe.
leicsmac Posted 23 February 2015 Posted 23 February 2015 Babe Ruth? Athlete Sport Statistic Standard deviations Bradman Cricket Batting average 4.4 Pelé Association football Goals per game 3.7 Ty Cobb Baseball Batting average 3.6 Jack Nicklaus Golf Major titles 3.5 Michael Jordan Basketball Points per game 3.4 Statisitical analysis lifted from wikipedia saying how many standard deviations ahead of the mean some top sportsmen are. Bradman is peerless among major sports in that respect.
Guest Posted 23 February 2015 Posted 23 February 2015 Tiger Woods probs not even the best golfer ever. Jack Nicklaus probs edges him out at the mo. If Darts counts as a sport then it's Phil Taylor for me.
Guest MattP Posted 23 February 2015 Posted 23 February 2015 Babe Ruth? I don't think Babe was that far ahead statically, he certainly changed the way baseball was played though.
LanguedocFox Posted 23 February 2015 Posted 23 February 2015 C B Fry: represented England at cricket and football, played in the FA Cup Final, equalled the world long-jump record, and was apparently barking mad.
Guest ttfn Posted 23 February 2015 Posted 23 February 2015 The highest test average apart from Bradman's is 61. He was 4 runs away from averaging 100. Absolutely no contest in my book, here's a sport that billions of people have played and he's 66% better than anyone else who's played it.
