A firm says it hopes 2,500 drinkers a day will attend an Oktoberfest-style event it is planning in Leicester's Abbey Park.

London Oktoberfest Ltd is seeking permission to hold a five day celebration from August 19 to August 23.

The company tries to recreate the experience of the world famous Bavarian knees up in UK cities and has chosen Leicester.

It hopes to set up a 3,000 square metre 'big top' style tent in the park in which it will serve lager specially imported from 500-year-old Germany brewery and food.

There will also be live traditional German music.

London Oktoberfest's event manager Filiberto Capone said: "

"We want to hold a fun event for people in Leicester. Most of our visitors usually dress up in traditional German clothing like lederhosen.

"We aim to make it as close to the real thing as possible."

"There will be traditional German bands but we realise five days of that might be a bit boring so there will be some dancing and some British pop music."

He added: "Somewhere like Abbey Park is ideal because it is easy to get to but at the same time it is quite far from people's homes so there won't be disturbance."

Leicester City Council's licensing committee will have to decide whether the event can be held without causing disturbance to nearby residents or anti-social behaviour.

Mr Capone said the company had been arranging similar celebrations in other cities without incident.

He added: "Last year we gathered together 100,000 across England and Scotland and our events have always been low risk.

"We have never had the need to call the police or measure injuries.

"We always work closely with the police and the local authorities and we will have the right number of security staff.

Mr Capone said ticket prices would be £5 though entry may be free on one of the days.

The Sunday could be a family fun day.

The council said London Oktoberfest had applied for a licence to serve alcohol from 4pm to 10.30pm from Wednesday to Friday and from midday to 10.30pm on Saturday and midday to 6.45pm on Sunday.

Live music would be played from 4pm until 10pm from Wednesday to Friday, from midday to 10pm on Saturday and from midday until 7pm on Sunday.

Recorded music would continue for a further 45 minutes (until 10.45pm) from Wednesday to Saturday.

Anyone wishing to comment on the event before the council makes a decision on whether to allow it should do so by April 22.

Munich's famous beer festival - Oktoberfest - runs for 16 days from late September and attracts more than six million people from around the world every year.

Meanwhile

Health bosses are considering raising the legal age for buying alcohol to 21 to tackle binge drinking.

The proposal has been put forward by experts at NHS Health Scotland, the Scottish Government’s health promotions agency, which says more action is needed to tackle the ‘continuing problem’ of ‘hazardous alcohol consumption in young people’.

The move would apply in pubs, clubs, supermarkets and off-licences in Scotland.

YES!

Was suggesting Oktoberfest to my mates a few weeks ago but none of them were too keen because of cost to Germany/Hotels, e.t.c

But if it happens in Leicester, no excuses, also the German market in Birmingham is always great at Christmas, apart from being surrounded by Brummies.

Yes Mike deffo.

You been to any of their other bars? Top brewery with an amazing range of their own brews. One is around 50% strength. Others at 10 and 15%. Not cheap, top notch though.

Yeah been to Shoreditch, Camden, Birmingham and Liverpool been waiting for them to open in Leicester but thought that it would never happen. I love their selection of world beers, not a massive fan of their own beers though.
