Kitchandro Posted 11 July 2015 Posted 11 July 2015 We were always going to struggle next season. Everyone outside of the top 9 was in deep shit at some point this season (Palace, late season darlings were in the bottom 3 and sinking like a stone at Christmas). It was never realistic to expect us to do anything other than simply stay up this coming season. Sure, maybe 45 points would be the target, but make no mistake, Pearson or no Pearson we'd have been in trouble at some point next season. As it is, we're a weak-ish Premier League team with no manager a week into pre-season. Other sides have started playing friendlies. We've given ourselves a massive disadvantage from the off and even with a fair wind our ceiling for this year was always likely to be lower-mid-table. There's a thread asking "Where will Okazaki fit in?". Nobody has a bloody clue because here we are, 4 weeks from the opening day with a squad of players who won't be familiar to a new manager, 3 new signings 2 of whom we have no idea how they'll fit in and a squad totally unsuited to playing any formation without 2 central strikers, a system which is largely out of fashion these days and not one we can pin our hopes on a new manager adopting. Add to that the fact that our best player from last season seems unlikely to re-sign and we've got a bit of a problem. Right now I'd say we're in a worse position than we were this time last year. The only thing we've got in our favour is experience and the rest is an absolute shambles. We need to get the right man in next week. I don't really agree with this and I'm not sure last season has anything to do with it. The only reason we really struggled last season was due to tactics. We'd have been fine if we had stuck to the principles we started and finished the season with. There's no real evidence to suggest that we'd struggle this season regardless of who the manager is, that's just your gut feeling. Whether we're in a shambles because we've made a hash of this managerial appointment is another thing, but if that is the case, it's not going to be an excuse. I expect the owners to appoint someone who will at least match last season. If not, we're heading in the wrong direction, whichever way you look at it. If we do get the right man, we won't go backwards.
Guest Papasmurf Posted 11 July 2015 Posted 11 July 2015 He signed Cech too unless I'm very much mistaken.
Kitchandro Posted 11 July 2015 Posted 11 July 2015 I think a huge amount of that is down to the addition of Robert Huth and his influence on the defence. Plus we over performed in the run-in and there was a great deal of luck, Burnley for example could have just as easily been a defeat on the performance or had Taylor netted the penalty. We got sides like Newcastle when they were shambolic and a few others when they had less to play for. Newly promoted side, that had some pretty clear weaknesses particularly in the defence for much of the season, I think 14th was probably slightly above par. They were shambolic when we played them in October, Villa were shambolic when we played them both times away, Burnley were shambolic when we only drew 2-2. There are always crap teams and always teams out of form, we played plenty of them all season, but we weren't getting the results against them until the end of the season. We also played quality sides near the end and won. We played quality sides at the start of the season and performed well. Burnley was lucky, I'll give you that, but the rest wasn't. We simply came to our senses and played the right way. We finished 14th eventually, which is about where I expected us to finish, based on the squad we had. But the struggle that lasted several months really shouldn't have happened, and considering how good we looked by the end, there is an argument to say that had we done the right things all season, we'd have accumulated more points. Even if, because of that, we were one of those teams who had little to play for in the run in.
Stevosevic Posted 11 July 2015 Posted 11 July 2015 Are we sure it wasn't Walshy who recommended these players for Chelsea?
kingfox Posted 11 July 2015 Posted 11 July 2015 All these posts on his failure at Greece, they have been poor for a while. They made the knockout stages of the World Cup but they didn't look great, then they got knocked out by Costa Rica. Yes they lost to Faroe Islands under him, but they lost to them again after he left. Juventus finished 3rd & 2nd in the two season's he managed them, after he left they finished 7th for two consecutive campaigns. Got Roma finishing 2nd in his first season with them, Inter Milan didn't go as well but they have been on the decline for years now. Then went onto do a brilliant job at Monaco achieving a promotion, then had the team finishing 2nd in their first season back in Ligue 1, yes he spent big & perhaps Monaco wanted the title but being pipped by a heavily backed PSG is still a good achievement. Might not be fans first choice but if he comes we could of done much worse.
ARM1968 Posted 11 July 2015 Posted 11 July 2015 Ranieri would be a decent appointment, MON would be better but not if he brings that tw&t Keane with him. Think NP was a head case. Bejesus!!
dylanlegend Posted 11 July 2015 Posted 11 July 2015 Ranieri- always the bridesmaid never the bride. Always second best.
PAULCFC Posted 11 July 2015 Posted 11 July 2015 To be honest, out of all the names that have been rumored (including MON) It has to be Ranieri for me.

Stevosevic Posted 11 July 2015 Posted 11 July 2015 He pulled off a Pearsonesque escape for Parma in 2007, on a half season contract so he's dealt with the bottom of divisions before as well.
dylanlegend Posted 11 July 2015 Posted 11 July 2015 This would be a bad appointment in my view. Yes he's had some top jobs but actually the expectation at these jobs was often high and can be argued hr underachieved when he was in the jobs. The top jobs is not a good thing either. When did he last experience a team at the bottom rather than top of the league? It is also a short term appointment, I'd be happy with MON as he knows the ethos of the club but Ranieri... I'd be surprised if he lasted beyond Xmas. As much as a Sven type appointment as you could get... SPEND SPEND SPEND
STUHILL Posted 11 July 2015 Posted 11 July 2015 I'm sure this link has already been posted but now he is backed as new favourite, it's a good read for anyone who hasn't yet http://metro.co.uk/2015/07/09/claudio-ranieri-would-be-the-perfect-manager-for-leicester-city-5286998/

The Doctor Posted 11 July 2015 Posted 11 July 2015 He signed Cech too unless I'm very much mistaken. No, that was Jose. Claudio signed cudicini though I'm sure. Anyway, probably the best manager we could get (anyone who thought Klopp is living in cloud cuckoo land); it's not a long term appointment, but it'd be a good one to establish and push on.

I'm sure he was signed in January on a free by the tinker man. Jose was in charge at the start of the next season when he actually joined.
Spiritwalker Posted 11 July 2015 Posted 11 July 2015 To be honest I would happily take Ranieri or O'Neil.
Stevosevic Posted 11 July 2015 Posted 11 July 2015 Yes, Cech deal agreed season before he joined. would have been Claudio
Guest Papasmurf Posted 11 July 2015 Posted 11 July 2015 Signed Petit too. Although I can't for the life of me remember if he was any good at Chelsea.

Robin JD Popley Posted 11 July 2015 Posted 11 July 2015 If our new manager is to be either Martin or Claudio Ranieri I'm very happy. They're the only people I think could take us to the next level.
