Mathew Upson seriously underrated?

Recommended Posts

Wasn't Arsenal away his PL debut for us? He lasted about 51 minutes before he went off injured.

He played about 4 games for us and didn't look good in any of them.

Got nothing against the guy but he was useless for us. It's not often Pearson got it wrong but this one he did. When Mesut Ozil out runs you with ease you know you're slow as hell.

I had hopes for him, given how solid he was for Brighton. But he is seriously injury prone and then when he did play he was far too slow.

My Brighton fan mate told me he was the POTY the previous season.

Not bad considering he beat Ulloa to that accolade who cost us £8m.

It never worked out for him here but he looked a good signing on the face of it.

Can absolutely understand why they went for him, we'll never know how much injuries played their part.

Im trying to let my wife know about the best team we had.....I was trying to explain to her about three center backs and wing backs in what I feel is our strongest formation but she just looked at me blankly so Im gonna simplify it to a 442 to save time.

Please fill in the gaps for me mate.

First best defender Wes

Second best defender Upson

After a great start to the season it seems silly to start doubting our strength already, however i can't help but question one thing in particular that has happened over this turbulent summer.

Is it just me, or does anybody else think that the release of Matthew Upson was premature? I know he didn't have a storming season, but i don't think anybody can claim that he wasn't a useful asset. As i look through our squad I can't help but feel that Matthew Upson would add some real steel to it. If you analyse each and every one of our central defenders their weaknesses become extremely apparent: Robert Huth demonstrated his ill discipline on Saturday, Wes Morgan scored so many own goals last year, Liam Moore is certainly not ready for premier league football (even if he is one of our own!), Wasilewski lacks discipline also, and Benalouane is untested.

When the wheels start to come off our season and the lads lose confidence, I think we could really do with a proven, experienced, reliable player like Matthew Upson to steady the ship. His dedication and experience is unquestionable; he's always been highly regarded and has been capped at the top level for England. I think last year he seemed to assert himself quite well alongside Wes Morgan and Wasilewski in the back 5- providing stability to counter Wasilewski's exuberance and composure to counter Morgan's erraticism. He may lack pace, but more than makes up for it through awareness and a unique understanding of the game. He reminds me very much of Jamie Carragher.

Would be very interested to know what other people think.

We've all released prematurely at some point, i try to think of Anne Robinson to prolong matters.

You might have something there.

Best defender 14/15: Huth

2nd best defender: Was

Wes: Wes

Best defender after Wes: Moore

2nd best defender after Wes: Upson

I mean, it's important we clarify that it's just centre backs, but otherwise (unless I've missed someone) I think you're bang on the money.

Does it matter now?

He's gone, and he accepted that injury unfortunately affected his time here. No grudges.

Can't this place be positive for once about something?

As a Stoke fan, who was able to experience the pleasure of Upson 4 years earlier, 4 years younger.... I can assure you that no, he is not seriously underrated. He's massively ****ing overrated, especially after his England stint. He was signed around the same time we signed Jon Woodgate and escaped much of the criticism because Tony Pulis felt playing Woodgate at right back was a clever idea..... which it wasn't. Woodgate struggled at right back which meant he was routinely criticized by supporters. However, take Woodgate out the team and Upson was the worst player in the team by some distance.

Average on the ball (he loved finding the Seddon stand with his wicked long range passing), average in the air, was regularly rinsed by players quicker than him and was another player made to look half decent by his partner (usually Ryan). The biggest joke about Upson was that he turned like the QE2 and that was genuinely no word of a lie. Many of us wondered if he was injured, because he found it that hard to turn and run.
