Whatever Happened To Freedom Of Speech In This Country?

Strange though that human rights seem to create consequences that impose on other people's rights. their wellbeing and the willingness of those in control to listen to their "free speech" in voicing their complaints.

The truth is we're all controlled by the flawed theory of consensus by people determined to impose their viewpoint over all others in whatever way is most effective...whether it's sensible or not.

Me, I detest being controlled for all that it seems unavoidable to a greater or lesser extent.

The saddest thing of all is that for all the centuries man has lived on Earth they cannot agree and effectively apply even the basis for a fair and just society or co-existence.

It really does emphasise the limits of the mind as it has evolved so far.

People mean well - its just that their thinking is so relentlessly influenced from birth and the moment that influence is flawed, so others are affected by those flaws rather like the spread of an insidious disease.

I'm always reminded that education should teach people how to think, not what to think.

Did you do Sociology in 6th form?

The middle-class, white, heterosexual, cis-gender, western male is the most oppressed demographic in the world. Orwell wrote 1984 as a warning not a blueprint. Better skilled Immigrants took my job. Chuck Palahniuk is my idol. Rabble rabble rabble.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

The problem I have with free speech is when people say something they know full well will be offensive to others, say it anyway then deny that its offensive.

Free speech is one of the most abused rights we have.

Is it really? How so?

He's joking isn't he?

Edit: Missed Bovril's post.

Tony Blair's fault innit.

By the way I think the post was taking the piss.

I always knew His Tonyness would ruin it for everyone.

He's joking isn't he?

Poes law - some people genuinely believe that.

Yes. I thought the "rabble rabble rabble" part made it pretty clear I was taking the piss and yes, I've heard people say that, or similar, unironically and genuinely thinking it.

Funny that the people who moan about lack of free speech will be the ones to label anyone with an opposing view to theirs as 'loony leftie'.

Equally anyone disagreeing with a 'leftie' might as well be Hitler in the 'lefties' opinion.

So this thread is a bunch of older gents with questionable views griping about the erosion of acceptance of said views, then?

Older gent with questionable views. Jeremy Corbyn?

It is generalising and sweeping statements such a this that has led to restrictions on freedom of speech.  :nigel:

With the occasional patronizing fool popping-in to try and raise his feelings of self-worth by adopting a superior attitude..

My self-worth doesn't need boosting. I'm very happy that the UK is becoming a more caring, accepting and tolerant place.

The rabble part made it confusing but as you say people actually believe it.

Freedom of speech is a fundamental human right! That is, the right to speak your mind freely, on important issues in society, with guaranteed freedom to express unpopular opinions, without fear of retribution.

This always has, and should still be a fundamental human right, which in recent years has been impinged upon, by puerile political correctness, and various anti British legislation.

Discuss.

It just had to be Dangerous Tiger putting up this thread!

Hilarious, I actually laughed out loud when I found this thread.

I just went outside and spat in the street a lot hoping he'd see and have a heart attack.

Freedom of speech is not the major problem it's people hearing what they want to hear rather than what is actually being said.
