Defending Corners (or lack thereof)

Recommended Posts

it's weird cos it's not even a recent problem. we've constantly been bad at defending them for as long as I can remember.

it's like we just don't care lol

It's schmeichel's only weakness. Probably the reason he hasn't been snapped up.

it's not just schmeichel. definite weakness of his not to come and claim crosses but defence and poor marking are also to blame.

You look just how small our starting 11 is and it's no real suprise we can't defend/attack set pieces, other than fuchs huth and Morgan we literally had no1 else who you would genuinely fancy in an arial duel, for me it's another reason why ulloa has to start over okazaki

One of the obvious reasons is a lack of height. If Ulloa doesn't start then in most games we are outnumbered by tall players on corners and you'll end up with Simpson or Fuchs marking a 6ft plus player. That doesn't excuse goals where there is just no one there (there was a massive gap in front of Kasper for the United goal) but I've almost just accepted thisas a consequence of the kind of player we have and the way we play: smaller, pacey players.

Goalkeeper rooted to the goalline is the problem. Sell on and get Buffon in in the summer.

I'm sure we're working on it - since Fuchs and Simpson have started playing we've not conceded a goal from open play in the last 7 matches - pretty chuffed at that improvement to be honest. Give them time and we'll improve on set piece defending too, hopefully

Might be his only weakness but it is quite a major one.

He is undoubtedly a great shot stopper.

However, does he command the box, sorry but no.

I'm not saying he's a bad keeper, but he is way down the list of players I would put on the team sheet first.

Yes I know it's not just up to the keeper to defend corners/crosses. I just feel this is his Achilles Heal.

Think back end of last season we looked better as someone said because we had Huth, Was, and Morgan in a three along with Ulloa. Just seemed to be better.

Is actually embarrassing. Kasper at times should do better but so should most our defenders, no one attacks the ball at all

????? So we still have our back 4 but more like a back 3 plus an extra and have mid 4/5 and the Strikers dont change? Like a 3-1-4-1-1 Or am i just playing to much fifa hahahaha

Not sure why we don't go zonal to allow those with height a free run at the ball instead of marking one man

I'd put money on huth or wes at least making it hard for anyone to score if you put one each front and rear of 6 yard box. I also wish we would put two munchkins on the halfway line to keep 3 defenders busy

I suspect CR has a top class keeper planned and a top class centre half lined up he knows we will need to strengthen that up but I suspect that will be in summer !

If we loose Vardy we will need to find another proper striker and quickly , and one with pace Bony might be one to go for ?

But a classy goalie and centre half is a must
