Liverpool vs Leicester: Foxes were the team that ended Reds’ incredible unbeaten run at Anfield

It has been 32 games since Jurgen Klopp's side last lost at home in the league, but their greatest ever unbeaten streak came to an end against Leicester in 1981

Liverpool host Leicester in the Premier League on Wednesday night on the back of an incredible home run.

Since being beaten by Crystal Palace in April 2017, Jurgen Klopp’s side have not lost a league game at Anfield. That’s 32 games (won 23, drawn nine), the longest such run in the division since Manchester City went 37 matches without defeat between December 2010 and December 2012.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 32 home league games

Although seemingly on course to match their greatest unbeaten run, there is still a lot of work to do to surpass Bob Paisley‘s great side.

Between February 1978 and January 1981, the Reds went an incredible 63 home league games without tasting defeat and included the 1978/79 and 1979/80 First Division title triumphs.

So who ended the run? It was Leicester, as goals from Pat Byrne and Jim Melrose gave them a 2-1 victory at Anfield.

Liverpool’s current players have turned Anfield into a fortress

Should they beat Claude Puel’s side – Leicester have lost six of their last seven away Premier League games against Liverpool – the club will move a step closer to equalling their next best unbeaten run, which came under Bill Shankly and lasted 34 games between March 1970 and December 1971.

In addition, Liverpool are looking to win eight consecutive Premier League home games for the first time since March 2010.

Perhaps not 'crazy' as such but a worthwhile stat nevertheless to realise how big a point that is last night... 

 

But Leicester were threatening throughout and are only the second team to leave Anfield without suffering defeat in the league this season, following Pep Guardiola's side on 7 October.

On a similar note, it was mentioned in commentary that Liverpool have only dropped 2 points from winning positions so far this season, and those were against Arsenal at the Emirates.

 

We doubled that yesterday, and the first side to do so at Anfield.

Also really highlights how bad James has been hit with injuries.

You say that, but let's not forget that Ndidi only just turned 22, Choudhury is 21 and Mendy has had a few injuries too. As you say, James has been injury hit and never really recovered/been out of favour.

 

Not knocking the amount of games Tielemans has had at 21 by any means though.

Are Man City aiming to score as many goals per month as there are days in the month in 2019? In January they scored 31 and by 11th February they'd scored 11 more. Already this season they've had wins of 1-0, 2-0, 3-0, 4-0, 5-0, 6-0, 7-0, and 9-0. All they need is an 8-0 win to complete the sequence.

Birmingham City scored 4 first-half away goals (against QPR) on Saturday for the first time since 1976/77. That season they whacked City 6-2 at Filbert Street in the old Division One. City's team included Frank Worthington and Keith Weller. The same season at Filbert Street, West Brom whacked City 5-0.
