I recall the ball being nudged slightly to the side by another player before he blasted them in, so won't count.

I did wonder whether it could have been that. Pretty useless and misleading stat in which case.

Leicester City currently top of the list in the Premier League for red cards this season on 5.

Leicester City 5

Everton 4

Huddersfield 4

BHA 3

Man Utd 3

Top of at least one league.

Not misleading is it, it literally says directly from a free kick.

Along similar lines to the earliest red card and win stat, but Wes Morgan's goal from the bench was apparently the longest amount of time after coming on as a sub that they've sccored in Premier League history.

I'd say that could even be a record in top flight history, cant realistically see there being a bigger gap barring a freak early injury to a striker.

Well it is, isn't it. Most people would class those goals as 'scoring from a free-kick', direct from the dead ball or not- Ferdinand scored 3, so it's a pointless stat.

But nodbody would call Ferdinand’s goals as scoring directly from a free kick though would they? That’s what the stat says.

My point is that nobody would specify 'direct from a free kick'. Surely most people would just say 'scored a free kick', regardless of whether someone had tapped the ball or not?

And you would have to have scored extremely late in the game. And subs have only existed since the 70s or something?

This scoring from a free kick debate reminds me of the time a member on here tried saying they Schmeichel didn't save a penalty because the rebound was scored lol. Even though Schmeichel literally did save the penalty.

Apparently they would though. That's what the tweet says.

Yeh. Scored one at Charlton too

I just find it strange that they would tweet it lol I suppose 'scored from a free kick without the ball being nudged to one side by a teammate first' doesn't have the same ring to it.

One could maybe find an easy way to say it... like ‘directly’.

The point of the stat is that lots of goals are scored indirectly from free-kicks/corners. But not many City players have had the skill to do a Beckham (or any other quality free kick specialist you’d care to name) from a set piece... not even Guppy!

It's the way it's written- it discounts Ferdinand's 3, despite there being very little difference in my eyes. I'm being pedantic, but it's a pedantic stat.

Theres not really anything pedantic about it. If you score direct from a corner, that's always stated. However, if a corner is swung in and headed in, it's not direct from a corner.

Same with a free kick. If its nudged, it's not direct from a free kick.

To demonstrate that, check the laws of the game, if you have an indirect free kick in the area, it has to be touched before someone can score. Therefore not directly scored from a free kick.

The ball is passed to him and he shoots. Doesn't matter how far the pass travels, it's a pass and therefore it's not a shot direct from the free-kick. With reference to the post above about corners, if you take a short corner, the player receives it, shoots and scores, it's not a goal direct from the corner.

I'd always just consider a goal from someone stood over the ball scoring from a free kick, whether someone has nudged it to him or not.

Excellently argued. :appl:

Actually, on second thoughts, and muddying the waters somewhat, a stat titled, "goals from corners", would be headers, volleys and maybe mad scrambles following a corner, rather than directly from a corner. :dunno:

It would, but the stat in reference to Maddison was "goals directly from free-kicks". If we got a free-kick in a wide area, crossed it in and scored, you could reasonably describe that as being a goal from a free-kick, but not a goal direct from a free-kick. I think. Similarly a header, volley, scramble etc. is a goal from a corner but not a goal direct from a corner. Direct to me implies it goes straight from the boot of the first player to touch the ball into the goal - allowing for deflections and so on. It is a pedantic way of looking at it but in my mind at least there's a clear distinction.

I think it's more mud than water at this point.

Yeah, as you notice, I went back and corrected myself having re-read the original stat.
