Loose link in the mirror but sounds a bit like us with 6 months left on his contract.

'Arsenal gossip round-up: Nordveit set for return?

Arsenal are interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach defensive midfielder Havard Nordtveit, according to Sky Germany.

Nordtveit is actually a former Arsenal youth team player, having featured in the youth ranks for three years until 2011.

The Gunners will have to compete with Everton, Leicester and Borussia Dortmund for his signature, after the Norwegian has continued to impress during this campaign.

Monchengladbach are keen for Nordtveit to sign a new deal to keep him with them, as his current contract expires at the end of the season.'

Not for me.

Comparing him to DD & Kante and Kante blows him out the water.

He has a similar tackles and interception stats to DD but DD is far more creative.

His pass completion stat is similar to both our players which isn't good enough as he appears to take less risks with the ball as his chances and key passes aren't as good.

The only benefit I can see is that he's tall so presumably would be beneficial at set pieces.

Relying on selective stats alone and trying to compare them against our current players is a short sighted approach and only tells you half the story.

For example, one interesting stat I saw was that this lad played a significantly higher amount of forward passes than our two guys, but then again that has surely got a lot to do with the players respective positions and role in the side - as a defensive midfielder collecting the ball from your back line you are hopefully going to look to move the ball forward rather than back to your defense.

Things I found interesting from reviewing this guy however was how highly rated he was at Arsenal - reserve team captain no less and they were reluctant to let him go, but accepted he needed to play which was something they couldn't offer. Previous to that he had made the break into professional football at a very tender age and has been involved in the Norweigan international setup throughout the age groups so the guy clearly has quality.

Personally, I would hope somethi comes of this - it's got the hallmarks of another excellent find from our scouting team.

Well i haven't seen him play so can only judge him by his stats. I only normally judge MF & FW's by their stats in the big five leagues otherwise the stats are too misleading.

Possibly the reason for him playing more forward passes is that he's a defensive MF in the true sense and usually there are 7 or 8 players in front of him and there still little risk passes? A bit like a GK will only ever make a forward pass. What we do know that he makes less offensively threatening passes as his key passes and chances created passes are below that of NG & DD.

It's still strange that his interception and tackles are only similar to DD. For me a central MF should excel in at least one of these areas and should score high in tackles/interceptions or chances created/key passes and Nordtveit does neither so I would still be dubious about him. Although the likes of Arsenal and Dortmund being interested does mean that there is more to this than meets the eye, he must have something about him.

Nordtveit would be adequate cover for the CB's too.

Bit of useless info for everyone. I used to buy him on a Footy manager when he was at Arsenal. He was always a good loan signing for the championship. Not followed him since.

So was Harry Kane, even we had him and didn't know how to play him. Who else did you follow?

Saw him a couple of times.
I'm not that imprssed. I won't say no, But he won't add something that we don't have in our  current squed right now.

So a possible reason for the less offensively threatening passes could also lie in his position - if you're a true holding midfield player, you're not going to be further forward to provide those threatening passes - yet the fact he's got a decent passing percentage (+80%) at an average range of 20 meters suggests he could provide the passes if employed differently - say in a 2 man midfield?

Secondly, as a defensive midfielder the positioning alone can be a reason that the ball is regained, albeit not directly by that player - it can just mean that a player looks up, sees the holding DM in the way of the attacker and has to check back - allowing a player further forward in the midfield to make the tackle / interception - it's not always the DM doing that job. In fact, if the DM is always doing that, it suggests a problem with the defensive shape in front of him because ideally, you want to win the ball back higher up the pitch.

But as you point out, stats are only part of it and what you're attempting to do is compare half a season of play in the German leagues to half a season in the English Premiership - as we well know, the two are very different so to draw any firm conclusions seems foolish - it would be more point to look at his stats soley and make a judgement on them alone or at least compare his stats to a similar player in the German league to try and establish his quality.

And even then, all you have is a basic idea of what he may be capable of - every player is playing under instruction, so there's no way to know whether a different coach could bring about new instructions that show the player in a better light. This is why nothing can replace the full scouting technique of looking at video footage, watching the player play live, speaking to coaches / managers / team mates that have played with him and why it would be unsafe to just say 'no' on such little incomparable evidence.

He Was really good on one version of football manager. I always used to sign him for city from arsenal and he always went on to win loads with city. That said, he used to moan a lot about my team talks and would always moan if you disciplined one of the other players so I'd steer well clear!

Lets get Kallstrom, Bakirciouglu, Selakovic and Cherno Samba in as well.

I agree with a lot of what you say but you put way too much emphasis on often in-definitive stats.

I've watched a handful of Borussia Mönchengladbach games this season and he's a mainstay under current coach Schubert: He's played at right-back, in central midfield and at centre-back.

Just like with Leicester, Gladbach's style is based on teamwork and I see a lot of similarities between us and them with regards to how the club is run.

I don't think he'd have a hard time fitting in.

He's also a very fair player as he's only picked up one yellow card in 14 league games (keep in mind he had to sit out the first two matches because of a red card at the end of last season).

And in the best case, he'll even chip in with a longshot goal:

According to my Borussia friend, he does not know his best position because he plays in so many.. Similar to James Milner. But he said he will always be a 7/8 out of 10 player, nothing more nothing less, just very reliabe
