Should over 75's get free TV licenses?

Would it be too complicated to make stuff like this means tested?  I'm not sure people should be rewarded just for being alive.

Same goes for the winter fuel allowance.  I don't feel the same way about free travel - it seems a sensible way of making use of the public transport network outside of peak times and encourages people not to use their sodding cars

If anything the over 75s probably watch the most tv. I don't see why you should get it free just because you hit 75. But then I don't really understand the principle of child tickets being half the price of adult tickets at football matches etc when it's the same seat you take. I'd be a crap businessman.

I think it's harsh, it's not like people over 75s cost us an awful amount is it? The only reason we can't afford them is because we are feckless and spend all our cash way before payday. I think there are lots more unjust benefit claims going on in this country from people who have barely ever contributed to the system. Leave our OAPs alone Jon, you big bully!

They shouldn't be allowed TV's let alone licences, im sick of travelling 20 odd miles just to press the sky button on my mums remote because she can't change the channel.

Oh FFS sake, this 100%.  I've never said 'This' in such a way before, and I can see why it's so empowering.

I think trying to explain to a senior citizen how a Sky remote can operate both the box and the television is one of the hardest tasks I, or indeed anybody else, has ever undertaken.

The Manhattan Project scientists would be stumped by this, I reckon

I am not over 75 so not bothered ATM. I do get a bus pass and a Winter fuel payment so they can keep their hands off that.

Is that the right attitude I should have today?

TBH I am not sure. The free license is supposed to offset other bills which a pension may only just about cover. At 75 a person may be infirm and it is not their fault they cannot move very well. They have probably worked all their life too.

I think they are only suggestion a voluntary contribution. I have not read up on it yet. How would  that work?

Anyway there is less need for a  license for anyone. I noticed that on my Kodi addons I have a full range of the freeview channels plus I can access films and TV shows. Yet  I still pay the fee. I must be mad.

I  think the fee will be phrased  out eventually anyway.

Don't forget that a lot of older people never  grew up with modern technology. Some don't even know how to use a PC.  Something that would be unthinkable to a five year old.

Seeing as the BBC are considering asking over 75s to pay their TV licences, I am inclined to wonder why on earth the over 75's should get free TV?  Am I being harsh?

Would you still think the same if instead of over 75s it said people who have worked for over 35years?

Are you against the idea of a free TV licence or could old people with very little money have a free licence?

Personally I have no problem with it. 75 is old and near death - if TV gives them some pleasure let them have it.

I suppose the idea is that over 75's are more likely to be on their own and it helps reduce the chances of isolation etc - how much does it save the NHS etc though?

Having said that, most over 75's i know could easily afford it and wouldn't worry about paying it either.

Available to those on pension credit who may struggle to pay for it seems a good compromise rather than be available for all.

As for bus passes, let them all keep them, especially if it keeps them off the roads!

Pension credits are means tested. Not sure about the OAP which I will be going onto later this year. Will have to look into that. Think it will be the same  but don't know about extra earnings.

When I was out of work I still had to pay it and JSA is around half the pension. A lot of pensioners have paid off mortgages so no worry there. Although TBF I was hoping not to be on the JSA for long. The time being over 75 varies from person to person.

both sets of my grandparents have plenty of spare cash, how about giving free TV licences to the under 30's!

Why don't the under 30's go and get jobs?

Bloody hell you robbing tory bastards.

By the time I'm seventy five there'll be no perks left other than shitting in my pants and making other people deal with it.

Yes, license fee is effectively a tax, you'd be robbing it from people's pensions, if they couldn't afford it they would effectively have to give up their TV as they probably don't have the internet and if they did wouldn't know how to use it.

I'm not saying that old people  can't survive without TV, but it is a bit harsh to deny them in their old age.

The reason this has come up is the Government used to subsidise OAP TV Licenses, but have now stopped so it is on the BBC to decide whether to do it or not.

If OAPs get a free TV license, should old people that don't have a TV be able to claim back the money?

Im definitely of the stock that  think its usually the 75's and above who have ( mostly) worked hard all their life to make Britain Great. To me its a little respect to people who have dedicated their life to our country.

Its a pretty much well known fact that Pensions are not growing at the rate of inflation. Hardly anything is. But at least most of us are of an age where we can do something about it - work.

Actually state pensions are rising above inflation.
