Defining Moments

For me I think I can just about pin it down to six particular games which best show how we have gradually blossomed into the role as title favorites.

 

Leicester City 3 Aston Villa 2

 

Yes, Villa are rubbish but at the time but this stunning comeback live on Sky showed how together the squad still was after the great escape.

 

Leicester City 2 Arsenal 5

 

Prompted the change to Simpson/Fuchs and away from our more cavalier style which is paying dividends now.

 

Leicester City 2 Chelsea 1

 

The first time we had beat 'top tier' opposition this season. Made people start to take notice.

 

Tottenham Hotspur 0 Leicester City 1

 

We didn't all know it at the time but this was a massive 6 pointer.

 

Manchester City 1 Leicester City 3

 

Absolutely dismantled the most expensive team in the country on their own ground. Stunning.

 

Leicester City 1 Norwich City 0

 

Ulloa's late winner was so important to bounce back after the second Arsenal defeat.

Contrast and perspective...Defining moments:-

1st ........the last seasons survival.

2nd and last....32 games this season.

Why? For survival or top half of the table expectations:-

Stress values and heights are not visible or felt, you simply

dont need to win every 2nd game or more.

Supporters dont need to sweat for every fought single point.

Title chasing, for fans every single point is a must, permatation thoughts

not easy to collect, forums like citys, experience unknown heights and

for 1st time fear of new unknown yet to be experienced lows.

Thats why Claudio has been top with his players and communicating

to fans, nice but not yet obligatory, that dreams could just be realised.

Not forgetting every single goal in a 1-goal difference win, has been and is

defining....

That said point 1, plus+++ signing Claudio Ranieri, not to be bettered.

I thought Danny missing that open goal was going to be a defining moment.

The Arsenal game for me, we had had a good run some good results, looked a little shaky at the back but were scoring plenty the we suffered our first defeat of the season and we conceded 5 goals. It was the first time in the PL we had been thrashed and, ignoring the Brighton game, the first time in a long time.

 

How did the fans react to this thrashing?

 

A standing fvcking ovation, it reminded me of Spurs last season when we lost at home, players were applauded off fans stayed behind chanting, I think that gave the players some belief,  likewise the Arsenal game. We could have capitulated, crumbled, first real test and we get thrashed, fans could have been streaming for the exit at 4-1. We could have all thought oh well, nice while it lasted, but nobody thought that. Everyone looked at the positives and just ignored the fact we had conceded 5 goals (except Claudio who tinkered with the defence). It wasn't the tinkering that made this a defining moment for me, it was the reaction from the fans, The positivity and support. How many other sides have lost 5-2 and been treated like heroes?

Has to be man city away .

Best home record(at the time) vs Best away record.

1st vs 2nd a proper 6 pointer .

Man city would have gone top with a win on goal difference. We went 6 clear!!

The whole world believed.

Palace at home...the first game where we saw a back 4 of Fuchs, Huth, Morgan and Simpson - they kept a clean sheet and earned their team a pizza. 

 

We dominated the midfield with Drinky and N'Golo.

 

There was a point towards the end of the game where Claudio urged the fans to get up and get behind the team  - the passion and fire in his belly was evident and from that point onwards, I believed that Claudio could do something special.

 

It was also clear to see that the likes of Vardy and Mahrez were enjoying their football more than ever, under Mr Ranieri.

 

Other games that spring to mind as belief builders were Swansea away, Spurs away and Man City away, all for different reasons.

 

December and February were always going to be the hardest months and we got through them both with flying colours.

Swansea away is a great mention. One of the best performances of the season, alongside many others of course.

was the 5-2 defeat, the most wonderful game, anyone not having seen the game would see the result and think Arsenal had won easy.

They would not  know that on another day we cou;d easily have led 3-0 before Arsenal scored

 I look back on that game, and in hindsight I think CR  used it has some kind of preseason trial, and then made the necessary adjustments, and,

here we are now, gonna win the premier

Leicester 2-5 Arsenal

In hindsight this trashing was a blessing in disguise because had we scraped another 3-2 win we'd have continued to play with Schlupp and de Laet for a bit longer. So thanks Arsenal for making Ranieri realise we couldn't continue with our cavalier style, a style that has been conveniently forgotten by opposition fans accusing of us being boring and anti football.

Swansea 0-3 Leicester

I know Swansea were rubbish but it was probably our best individual performance of the season. We tore them apart. Monk was sacked after this game.

Leicester 2-1 Chelsea

Chelsea were poor but we had to beat an elite team for people to take us serious and give us credit.

Tottenham 0-1 Leicester

Six pointer. That is all. We didn't know it at the time but, my god, how crucial was that win.

Palace 0-1 Leicester

This is this game where I couldn't enjoy watching us anymore. It became serious business. It gave me belief that we're pretty decent at this grinding out business stuff.

Also when Pearson finally played Albrighton at the end of last season.

The draw against West Brom was the most pivotal moment.

 

Had we won that i honestly reckon Arsenal & Tottenham would have won. Played on their minds i reckon.

Huth at Spurs and Ulloa v Norwich were both massive in the context of momentum. But most decisive has to be Vardy v Liverpool. The absolute confidence with which he struck that (in the first of a run of games that it was claimed would see us stumble) was world class and set up Man City later on that week.

Norwich away was a big result, plenty of questions about how we'd react to a defeat in a difficult away match and we responded with a very professional performance and deserved win.

With the benefit of hindsight, Tottenham away was an enormous win. We beat them at WHL just before they started to become title contenders, and I think a lot of us saw it as little more than a win against CL contenders than the absolutely massive six pointer we can now perceive. We defended brilliantly, kept it tight in midfield and Huth's header will live long in the memory - the power in that bloke's neck muscles must be immense.

 

However, the game that truly had me beginning to believe was THAT game at the Etihad. We visited free scoring Manchester City - the most expensively assembled side in English football history with the best home record to boot. This would surely be the game we got utterly tonked, the day our bubble burst. Not a bit of it - it wasn't a smash and grab, we went there and gave them an absolute lesson in football. That, for me, was the moment the world realised we were serious contenders for this title. Neither ourselves nor Manchester City have been quite the same since, as our belief and that of the public has sky rocketed, theirs has utterly slumped.

 

As for others - Norwich was the perfect recovery from what could have been a demoralising defeat to Arsenal. Last minute winner from an inspired substitution against dogged opposition showed two more attributes of potential champions - strength in depth and determination.

 

Regardless of what happens here on in, this has been the best season in my lifetime and we may be in for more. Champions League next season, huge global exposure, being the only truly world famous team in the East Midlands, a manager who is genuinely loved, great up and coming players in Gray, Dodoo and Chilwell and huge investment coming in.

 

The future's bright, it's fvcking blue and white.
