4everfox Posted 12 April 2016 Posted 12 April 2016 Pearson did nothing for us. He didn't bring us out of the third tier at the first attempt, didn't win the Championship in style, didn't pull off the greatest escape ever, didn't build a world class sports science and fitness team, didn't employ Steve Walsh as recruitment manager, didn't sign Simpson, Morgan, Huth, Fuchs, Drinkwater, Mahrez, Vardy or Albrighton. And as brilliant as he was for us Gillies and Bloomfield still surpass him.
m4DD0gg Posted 12 April 2016 Posted 12 April 2016 If CR wins the premier league it will be him without a doubt. NFP laid some good foundations but was fundamentally incapable of delivering on those in the premier league. MON a close second.
Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 12 April 2016 Posted 12 April 2016 Gillies is the best ever for me but if we win the league it has to be Reneri... We've never won the top flight before. Why do you always call him Renieri? Or Reneri?

Saying he isn't the best in our 130 year history isn't the same as thinking he's done nothing for us, is it?
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 12 April 2016 Posted 12 April 2016 Can you truly judge a manager before he's left the job? It's sometimes what follows afterwards that points to how good a manager was.
LanguedocFox Posted 12 April 2016 Posted 12 April 2016 And as brilliant as he was for us Gillies and Bloomfield still surpass him. . Saying he isn't the best in our 130 year history isn't the same as thinking he's done nothing for us, is it? Saying that he is behind Bloomfield is saying something similar: Bloomfield's teams were fun to watch, but it is no accident that we were relegated within a season of him being sacked. Same with Matt Gillies: three cup finals were great, and he brought in some marvellous players: but we were playing Second Division football within a couple of seasons of him being sacked. The point I am making is that Pearson should be judged on his legacy and my view is that no other manager in our history has left behind what Pearson did. I admire very much what Ranieri has done this season (and I'm happy to admit that I was expecting a mid-table finish at best). But the fact is that, without Pearson's work over the previous three or four years, Ranieri would almost certainly not have achieved what he has.

He never said NP has never done nothing for this club. He simply said he was not the best ever manager Are you an ostrich?
Arriba Los Zorros Posted 12 April 2016 Posted 12 April 2016 Going to do the top 5 of managers during my lifetime (1988 on) 1) Ranieri 2) Pearson 3) MON 4) Little 5) Adams

Alex Ferguson must have been a terrible manager by that criterion.Equally people may argue that O'Neill's success couldn't have happened without the Little years. Pearson did an excellent job but "legacy" is nebulous and difficult to measure. The only tangible metric is performance on the pitch translated into achievement through league position or cup success. Gillies, O'Neill, Bloomfield and Ranieri have all achieved more than Pearson. He's about level with Gordon Milne, towards the top of a second tier of previous City managers. That's no criticism given the elite group is so small. It's not really his fault that he didn't get to stick around for longer to prove (or not) that he belongs with our very best, but such is life.
Dan Posted 12 April 2016 Posted 12 April 2016 If we win the league Ranieri will go down as the best ever and given what was expected in pre-season it is highly unlikely that he'll ever be toppled in my lifetime too. Even though he didn't really build the core of the side, what he's done with it is absolutely incredible.

In terms of trophies won (pretisgious ones), Pearson is not quite up there with the names you mentioned, but his achievement in taking us from our lowest ebb ever to reestablishing us as a PL club is one of the greatest in our history
Corky Posted 12 April 2016 Posted 12 April 2016 If we win the league Ranieri will go down as the best ever and given what was expected in pre-season it is highly unlikely that he'll ever be toppled in my lifetime too. Even though he didn't really build the core of the side, what he's done with it is absolutely incredible. I think it makes it more impressive. How many managers do you hear given or giving excuses about it not being their squad? To take someone else's choice, win them over and improve them takes real skill.
Lloydwasmylife Posted 12 April 2016 Posted 12 April 2016 Certainly not NP. He did a brilliant job for us but is not the 'best ever'. Frank O'Farrell and Martin O'Neill did wonderful things. I would find it hard to compare them to somebody doing something amazing in just one season. Pearson and MoN are the equal for me. Claudio would eclipse them both if we win obviously.
foxes_rule1978 Posted 12 April 2016 Posted 12 April 2016 Winning the League title and Champions League qualification tops anything we have ever done at this club
Monsell1976 Posted 12 April 2016 Posted 12 April 2016 Going to do the top 5 of managers during my lifetime (1988 on) 1) Ranieri 2) Pearson 3) MON 4) Little 5) Adams For me1) MON (just, could drop to second) 2)Ranieri 3) little 4)Adams 5)Pearson
Hollism Posted 12 April 2016 Posted 12 April 2016 Our best finish finish under MON was 8th, the lowest we've been all this season is 6th. I know it could all go the other way next year and that, but the argument that CR isn't out best ever manager is a weak one.
fuchsntf Posted 12 April 2016 Posted 12 April 2016 And as brilliant as he was for us Gillies and Bloomfield still surpass him. I have always carried the flag, for Gillies and Bloomfield. Their era rightly goes down in the best moments and memories, we ever seen at Filbo.. and what players they gave us. O'neil he kindled that belief, but never took us to that next major step, but belongs to 1 of the top ??? Pearson, took us out of a darkness that could at the time still imploded. He made Adams work yrs before worthwile. NP breathed new life back, after that disastress drop . He gave us a truly great promotion, and gave us that 'great Escape'. No negatives from me over his lively press conferences, and escapades with journalists or players alike. Klopp, Capello, SAF, Jose, even Pep, oh yes and Gillies and Wenger have all had their entertaining, laughable, pathetic, crazy moments. This season beats them all, its the situation, the historonics within the PL, the STORY OF STORIES. Which NP did feed, but Claudio Ranieri understood and found that 'something' not just in his new squad but within his own character and capabilties. Best ever manager ??...Every bloody single one of them!!!!!!!!,.............. throwing in Milne as well. Because without that history you dont have or can enjoy this moment...
Fox92 Posted 12 April 2016 Posted 12 April 2016 Why do you always call him Renieri? Or Reneri? Didn't realise it was an a after the R. Tbf the latter is the first time I've ever spelt it like that but I was rushing with my reply. Not much of a big deal, mind, you all know who I'm talking about.
FNQ Posted 12 April 2016 Posted 12 April 2016 This season is incomparable, so let's not fall into the trap of belittling previous achievements and previous managers. Winning 'a couple of league cups' was an extraordinary achievement. This year surpasses it of course, but it doesn't make that achievement any less impressive!
Len Finsbury Posted 12 April 2016 Posted 12 April 2016 Ranieri for me too, should we win the title, it has to be used on greatest achievement in my opinion. Look at England national side. I think most people will agree that Sir Alf Ramsey has been the greatest manager but his win rate is lower than Capello. I can't imagine us having states of Fabio any time soon. I don't even care what happens next season. All of the previous contenders had blots in their copybooks, so to speak. What MON did was exceptional at the time, but is it any greater than plenty of other teams have done recently? Pearson's tenure was superb too but again, Adkins did something similar with Southampton. There's only a limited number of teams whose name is engraved on that trophy.
Monsell1976 Posted 12 April 2016 Posted 12 April 2016 Our best finish finish under MON was 8th, the lowest we've been all this season is 6th. I know it could all go the other way next year and that, but the argument that CR isn't out best ever manager is a weak one. MON won cups and had consistent top 10 finishes, not undermining Claudio, but to dismiss MON is harsh.Claudio will have a higher league finish, if we win it, even me as a harden oneil fan, if we win the league, Claudio will move into my favourite manager/ best city manager
