Best ever manager

All this Vardy crap, Vardy himself has said it took him time to adapt to the championship and learn what it was about, he's also said the exact same about the premier league. So, rather than beat your own agenda drums, why not take his sodding word for it. What we do know, is that come the end of the season he was ripping it up and got called up for England... the end.

At this point

1 O'Neill

2 Pearson

Ranieri has no rating yet as he still hasn't even had a full season and has so far only achieved the preliminary round of the Champions League. If we win the league, he'll go to the top of the pile. Whether he stays there, remains to be seen.

Only?

How is this even a debate? Ranieri.

O’Neill and Pearson achieved great things. But they only ever achieved what a club like Leicester should achieve when it is at its peak: Leicester, Norwich, Birmingham, QPR, Middlesbrough, Swansea. All these clubs have won the League Cup. All these clubs have won promotion and finished in the top 10… It’s a great achievement, but one that should expected of clubs of this size every now and again.

However, none of them have ever qualified for the Champions League. Not even close. Most of these clubs won’t qualify for the champions League if it runs for the next 1,000 years. Yet we have done this under Ranieri. How can this compare to winning the League Cup??!!

It’s funny how our CL qualification suddenly looks routine now that it’s been done… No doubt next season people will be moaning if we are outside the top 4!!

Fantastic post. Great credit is deserved for those managers who have taken us to the top end of our historical average. But what's happening now is miles beyond that. Ranieri is the answer.

Swap O'Neill with Ranieri purely because Ranieri has a lot more resources than what we use to have.

It's all relative though, we might not have spent so much back then... but the money others were spending was massively less as well. O'Neill spent a decent amount.

Exactly we didn't get lucky and buy World class players with Vardy and Mahrez, Pearson was patient with them and developed them into class players. If Mahrez was really that good when we bought him I think he would have at least been starting matches for Algeria

You don't think the opposition have too?

Top post.

Of course there is the individual memories, and achievements and successfull tactics realised, by all

of the top managers quoted, but even contradicting some of my own posted thoughts, I cant agree more.

As did the bigger clubs! It's far more of a "closed shop" now than it was in the 90s.

We have the 17th highest wage bill in the league! We have the 18th most expensive squad in the league re: transfer fees! And we're top of the league and have qualified for the Champions League ffs!

MON did excellently on the resources he's had, but our relative resources now to the rest of the league are pretty similar to what they were in the MON era.

I loved the MON era and have loads of great memories from it, but there's absolutely no debate that Ranieri isn't #1. Only blind nostalgia would argue against it.

Ranieri hasn't won anything yet, hasn't made a good signing of his own accord yet and hasn't completed a full season yet. Yes he probably will go down as the greatest manager we've ever had no doubt but lets not get ahead of ourselves and tear apart what Martin O Neill and Pearson did along with it.

No one is tearing apart what MON and Pearson did. I love them both, but this is the season that will live with us forever!

We have already qualified for the Champions League, so we have achieved the biggest thing in any of our lifetimes already. No one is getting ahead of themselves.

:o

Someone earlier said that some City fans seem to be becoming blasé about us getting into the Champs League...

Can I reiterate....we are going to be playing Champs League football next season, and that could well be as the Champions of England! Take that in for just a moment........

Ranieri is a miracle worker. It's a miracle.

For me it comes down to O'Neill or Ranieri.

Pearson, Little and Adams both did amazing to get promotion, but all struggled, 2 getting relegated immediately and Pearson needing the greatest of escapes to survive, compare that to O'Neill whose first season in the top flight never looked like relegation and we won a trophy. So in the only direct comparison you can make O'Neill was the best and consolidated that with 3 more successful seasons.

Whilst Ranieri didn't take over a newly promoted club, it was a club that was favourite for relegation, and in his first season at the club has blown all top flight records out the water, even if we don't win it this has been our most successful league season and winning it would just be ridiculous and yet so tantalisingly close.

The only reason there is any doubt about Ranieri is that what O'Neill did was over a longer period of time, he built a team and left us in great shape, we were in such good shape Taylor got that side to the top of the league and he was clueless. This is where I am reluctant to claim Ranieri as our greatest ever manager, because despite this amazing season we don't know how he will leave this club, we don't know whether his future actions will damage the club. I could cope with relegation after this season but it would probably put him below O'Neill. There is more a manager can do to damage a club though and I have no reason to think he will do any of these, but if he does do a Sven/Taylor, spends a ridiculous amount on players and jeopardises the future of the club, or behaves in such a way he drives a wedge between the club and the owners and they do a Lerner. Then he will not be our greatest ever.

In O'Neill's first full season we secured safety on the same game as under Pearson. But, yeah, in general we were not in grave danger at all during the season.

I'm a big fan of Nigel Pearson, but in all fairness he is the one most likely to have done that rather than Ranieri. MON also did to an extent as he was a control freak - Ranieri's by far the most approachable of the 3, on the surface anyway.

Bloody tough one this ....   depends what factors you take into account and how much emphasis you put on them.   Could Ranieri have done what Pearson did and build a team without mega bucks ? Possibly not.  Could Pearson have polished the team into title contenders like Ranieri has done ?  Possibly not.  Where would we be right now if NP was still here ...   ????      O'Neill is now an international manager and yet Pearson was sacked ....   but does that mean anything ?    In terms of who has achieved the most Ranieri hasn't been here long enough but we all know what MIGHT happen ....   Pearson has brought us up as Champions twice yet MON has given us so many amazing trips to Wembley ....   perhaps our best ever season and our best ever manger are two different things ??

I need to give this more thought and will check with the pub pundits tonight ....     but initial thoughts ....   MON by a whisker,  Pearson second, and the Don TBC.

Gray?

And doesn't matter if he hasn't had a complete season, we've qualified for Champions League before the season is over!

If Ranieri wins the league this season and then gets back to back relegations with 0 points he will still be our greatest manager by a distance.

We're Leicester City and we're winning the Premier League ffs.

I'm not sure you can say little got us relegated, he left around November in his first prem season iirc.

Whether you look at it by best as in most talented manager, or by best as in judged by achievements, then winning the league would put Ranieri ahead either way. One premier league win is worth more than MON's top half finishes and league cup wins.

I'd probably put Pearson third during my time as a fan (since the late 80's) in terms of achievements, but in terms of managerial talent I'd have him 4th behind Little, possibly 5th behind Adams. The best thing Pearson ever did was employ Steve Walsh. Pearson could hardly fail with the players Walsh brought to the club. In fact if we were talking about most influential club employee instead of purely looking at managers, Walsh would top the lot.

Too harsh on Pearson. Look how Jose Mo failed with the players he had!

At present... Ranieri ties with Gillies, imo. If and when we win it, then it has to be Claudio.

How about a petition to replace the clock tower with a statue of the great man?

If we win the league surely Ranieri won't just be our best ever manager, he'll be the best manager ever full stop!

Yes Pearson laid the foundations and did a great job but come on....what's happening right now is ridiculous. It still doesn't make any sense at all. Claudio is a managerial genius.

There was absolutely no condensation intended towards MON in my post. I was just saying it is not in the same league as this season. It was still a great era and he was a great manager for us, I certainly didn't mean it to sound condescending, but Ranieri has overtaken it and I didn't understand people still saying Ranieri isn't our best ever or that he needs another season and another cup to prove that. He doesn't. Even if we get relegated next season, this will be the era we'll all remember.

If anything my condensation was meant towards people who always think things in the past were better when this is clearly an incomparable achievement in the club's history. and this is the one we'll all remember on our deathbeds, rather than a condensation at the MON era itself.

I've read your two posts and your spot on. Nobody can deny what Pearson done for us. He brought a level of professionalism to the job that we haven't seen before.

However we all know he wasn't the best Coach and Ranieri has taken us to a level none of us thought possible. His Knowledge of the game both as a Coach and a Manager has very few equals. So if we do win the league he'll have to go down as our greatest. But none of it possible without Pearson's input. So it's equally a little unfair to say it's not Pearson.

We all have our favourites but the one I have a soft spot for was Mike Kelly. He was dealt a lousy hand with poor players no money and no support from the Chairman. Yet he managed to keep us in the Championship.

Yep. How good was Paisley or Shankly before they left Liverpool? How about Fergie before he retired, or Clough before he was too pissed to stand up? You can judge them if they achieve outstanding things, and this is one such..

Not won anything you are right, but CL qualification and the first time we have ever qualified for a European competition by league position is a massive achievement especially in the modern game today... so it isn't silly for those to put Ranieri up there even now without any titles yet. Not one person is tearing apart what O'Neill and Pearson achieved they were both remarkable and part of some of the best years we have had... But what Ranieri has achieved is break into the elite something we could only ever dream of
