HankMarvin Posted 17 June 2016 Posted 17 June 2016 Jamie Vardy has been warned he faces a return to the bench despite his supersub heroics against Wales. Boss Roy Hodgson will bring his Thursday match-winner Daniel Sturridge into the team for England 's final group match at Euro 2016 on Monday, but the says fellowstriker Vardy ’s place in the XI is not guaranteed. Hodgson is set to make changes for Monday’s clash with Slovakia after starting the same team in the first two matches. He admits centre-forward Harry Kane and wide-man Raheem Sterling are showing worrying signs of “wear and tear.” The manager is privately concerned that Vardy, who scored the equaliser after coming on as half-time substitute against Wales, can only play in a central role - a situation which could even open the door to the starting XI for teenager Marcus Rashford . But Sturridge, who capped an impressive showing as the other interval replacement by scoring the last-gasp winner , is set to be rewarded with a starting place against Slovakia on Monday. Hodgson also hinted that he is tempted to bring in Jack Wilshere to help “manipulate” the ball in midfield. he said: “I would like to believe that none of them are so arrogant that they sit there and think, ‘This lot can’t threaten me’ and their place is absolutely guaranteed in the team. "I would be very upset if that was the case because I see them in training every day. “There’s a lot of quality strikers, they do have qualities and even the young ones have qualities. The Rashfords, the Jamie Vardys with only four or five international caps, they have got qualities.” When asked about the Red Bull and nicotine, he said: “It’s just something I’ve always done and they’ve been checked with the medical team and there’s nothing wrong with them. “I wouldn’t call it a diet , the Red Bull was just to wake me up in the morning. “It’s just standard me. It’s a regular thing whereby I have a Red Bull every morning. It’s just something I felt I needed.” While a player with Vardy’s wiry frame and remarkably low body-fat – reckoned by Leicester ’s fitness team to be just six per cent – would not be expected to do a lot of heavy weights, he insists he has resisted all attempts to get him anywhere near a gym. The new Footballer of the Year, a former smoker, said: “No, I never go in the gym. If I go in the gym it will slow me down. I don’t go in for weights or anything like that. “Each and every person is different and this is my way, and I’m sure if someone else tried doing what I do then it probably wouldn’t work for them. “Yeah, they’ve tried (to drag me in to the gym) and not succeeded.” In pictures — Vardy scores as England come from behind to beat Wales: And asked to name the last time he lifted a weight, Vardy quipped: “Probably that can of Red Bull the other day.” Vardy says he has not been affected by the £20million bid Arsenal made for him a week before the tournament began. The striker is believed to be leaning towards staying with the Premier League champions, who have offered him a major pay-rise to more than £100,000 per week. And he said: “It’s been easy (to shut that out). I’m here to concentrate and focus on England and that’s all I’m going to be doing.”
AKCJ Posted 17 June 2016 Posted 17 June 2016 He hates the fact that he's an underdog. Can't stand the idea that the scrawny yob from Sheffield can't half ruffle the feathers of the big boys. In his world the poster boy from Man United/Arsenal/Liverpool will always be England's best player. Vardy could score a hatrick of bicycle kicks against the germans and Roy would still say "his place is under threat".
The Doctor Posted 17 June 2016 Posted 17 June 2016 The manager is privately concerned that Vardy, who scored the equaliser after coming on as half-time substitute against Wales, can only play in a central role Who the hell is such a bellend as to be concerned that a top striker can't play out wide? Just stick him down the middle you utter cockwomble.
apple987 Posted 17 June 2016 Posted 17 June 2016 Tbh I like vardy as an impact sub for England anyway. I would prefer kane to start again and vardy to come on as an impact sub.
Fox92 Posted 17 June 2016 Posted 17 June 2016 In his world the poster boy from Man United/Arsenal/Liverpool will always be England's best player. That's not just Hodgson. It's the FA, it's the Premier League too.
AKCJ Posted 17 June 2016 Posted 17 June 2016 That's not just Hodgson. It's the FA, it's the Premier League too. The Premier League have nothing to do with it. It stems from The F.A. SKY have a big say in it too. ****ing hate it.
Jimothy Posted 17 June 2016 Posted 17 June 2016 It's pretty clear that you can start Sturridge and Vardy as Sturridge can drop back to a deeper position and also enjoys pulling out wide. Vardy central, with Sturridge roaming, it's not rocket science.
apple987 Posted 17 June 2016 Posted 17 June 2016 And let's be honest here, what did vardy actually do when he came on the other day? Yes he scored the goal from a few yards out (stood well offside) and held the ball up for second goal. But other than that he didn't actually do anything. Not his fault though because the service wasn't there, as it isn't for kane either. I just think people are going too overboard with the actual impact vardy had. For me it was mainly down to sturridge and walker we won the game.
Rusko187 Posted 17 June 2016 Posted 17 June 2016 Do despair at times, Woy needs to go and I've been saying that now for a number of years.

Agreed, but it could be argued he produced more in that half - than the majority of players that played 135 mins pror to his substitution
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 17 June 2016 Posted 17 June 2016 Vardy can only play central.... Yes because he's a striker. Hate Hodgson. Why take Vardy then?! He wants to suddenly play the quicker strikers as wingers when it doesn't work. Stop trying to accommodate people Roy Yes Kane has been shit so change it and play with Vardy and Sturridge and let's get some pace up top. Hate the way we ruin better players by putting them in wrong positions just because of their pace or whatever. If we had a big midfielder like Yaya Toure would you play him at the back because he's tall?? No because he's a midfielder. So don't play a striker as a winger when their not or even worse...have them not play at all due to them playing shit their!! Just embarrassing from Woy

For me it was mainly down to sturridge and walker we won the game. His contribution as the main striker, taking the attention of at least one of Wales 3 central defenders was key throughout. You don't only contribute with the ball - what you do off it is equally as important - and by staying on the shoulder up top, pushing the Welsh defender deeper, this allowed others space to play in.

He didn't have the best game without the service but a goal and a flick on which was crucial to a goal (as you mentioned) were the difference between 1 0 and 2 1. Walker and Sturridge were great too, all three should be starting next game. Kane has had much longer and did much less, probably because he isn't as quick. Also as above the amount of space the pace up front freed was so noticeable, we had much more of a chance every time with the ball

As for Roy, what an absolute donkey.

Yes but comeon it was hardly a moment of genius for his goal was it its not as though he thought...hmmmm I will just stand yards offside in the hope a Wales player will head it straight to me and I will bang it in the net. If it was kane we would be saying can't believe kane is getting plaudits and love for scoring a tap in when in an offside position. I love vardy but it was lucky. No one can deny it.
Wymsey Posted 17 June 2016 Posted 17 June 2016 Roy doesn't use Vardy to his best as he doesn't know how to play around him. Would love him to score again in the last few minutes, making Hodgson a fool and doing a pulled-face reaction.
Larry_LCFC Posted 17 June 2016 Posted 17 June 2016 Sorry Rashford starting ahead of Vardy? Am I really reading this? Roy is deserves a mention in the Biggest Cvnts of our time thread. What an absolute cretin.
stevelcfc Posted 17 June 2016 Posted 17 June 2016 Really wish he hadn't have taken him now. Let him have the summer off to rest, plus we might have had a decision.

StanSP Posted 18 June 2016 Posted 18 June 2016 I think he'll start. At least 1 of Vardy and Sturridge should start. Oh and also, there is a Vardy Euro 2016 thread in the Leicester forum

Matt Posted 18 June 2016 Posted 18 June 2016 Everyone's turning against Woy, not just Leicester fans, the amount of fans of other clubs i've heard or read saying "If he doesn't start Vardy now then he's a ****ing idiot". He's gotta go, simple, your time is up Woy.

Van Nistelrooy was a master at it. Listen to Shearer when he talks about the Vardy goal, lucky that the ball fell to him yes, but having that preditory instinct... that's not luck.
