If Sam comes in and drops those he doesn't believe are committed to the England team I would be delighted.  Unfortunately I think the sponsors mandate that core of players are selected regardless.

I'd be amazed if that's true.

Really?  I would be surprised if there wasn't a core of players who are expected by the England sponsors to be included.  Not Mandated maybe, but you know, disappointment gets expressed in other ways when their man in the shirt adverts isn't on the pitch.

Allardyce has been overlooked so many times but when Sven, Mclaren, Capello and Hodgson all failed, fat sam is finally top of the list despite doing next to fúck all in management.

The FA will always play it safe and prioritise money making opportunities over any chance of real success on the field.

I suppose they need all the money they can get so they can outrageously overpay the next yes man to oversee yet another failed tournament.

I say with absolute certainty Allardyce will deliver the World Cup.

On the basis Joachim Low walks and Germany offer him the job.

Am I the only one quite pleased by his appointment if it happens? He's not an outstanding choice but the best available.

We have to realise that our country is no where near a top football nation any more. In reality we're the next tier down with teams like Poland, Austria and Switzerland.

We might have arguably slightly better players than those teams but those teams are a team we are not.

I like the idea of a no nonsense manager who will say it as it is and not take any bull shit. At least I hope he'll be like this, certainly has been at his clubs.

No he's not won anything but he gets teams Commited and motivated and most of all organised. Everything England have lost in recent years.

I don't expect him to deliver a tournament but my expectation is to see a fighting hard to beat team at tournament level, not this soft, clueless one which we see every two years.

Lots of players say he creates a good atmosphere and a team spirit. Did we have any of that under the last months of Hodgson?

Think his football style is criticised far too heavily too. He plays football to suit a team. If that means going long... So be it.

Watching his last season at W.Ham and Sunderland I thought some decent stuff was played.

I'd rather play like Portugal and get to a semi or further playing organised, hard to beat football than play attacking football with a poor defence and finish no where.

No way we would have conceded a long throw goal like vs Iceland under Sam.

Just feel he is the right man for the job and maybe get people behind England again.

Hope the press give him a chance though too

I feel like there's a lot of sense in appointing Allardyce but I'm equally as scared that I'll be sat here in two years thinking I'm as guilty as anyone of learning nothing.

He's a step up from Hodgson. That is without a doubt in my eyes. A proper game-plan seems to be going further and further in football these days and he's no mug tactically.

Pretty much how I feel Dan. Then again, having seen so many England managers come and go and having hope each time, I'm just gonna wait and see. My initial feeling is that he's a step up from Woy.

What I want to know is who do people think we're going to get? People are deluded if they think this job is even close to being as prestigious as it once was. It's a high paid job relative to other international sides but not compared to top sides. It's a job where expectations are generally high (although even lowering them a bit seems to have lowered our performance in sync), the squad is full of players who are proven only in England, not in any other leagues and not even on the continental stage. I cannot remember the last manager to come out of the England job with a higher reputation than they went in with - that has got to be a put-off.

Allardyce strikes me as being back to basics, and it's what we need now. I think a lot has to fundamentally change in the English game so that we can produce quality players year in, year out. Germany, Spain and France churn out quality youngsters every season, and they actually stay around the top as well generally - we call Sterling our future and look at him now, the same could easily happen to Kane & Alli.

Considering the level we're now at, I'd take Allardyce, I don't expect him to win a trophy (and anyone who does is delusional) but I expect him to turn out a team that I feel like I can get behind, because by about the hour mark of that Iceland game I actually didn't want us to equalise because of how pathetic we were. Say what you want about me being the issue there but there is no way on earth I'd ever feel like that about Leicester. I want a manager who gets me feeling emotion in sync with the squad, not that heartless turgid nonsense we had under Hodgson and managers before him.

At the moment it's just talks they may do what they did last time snub him, there probably just interviewing him because at the moment he's the best English coach in the country. I think the FA have got other targets, I just think there looking to see what he has to offer.

Yeah, great post. Exactly I how look at it.

Allardyce is solid, he plays a style, don't take much shite, is actually more scientific than he's given credit for and generally has a plan b.

Let's hope it don't all go tits up if he becomes England manager.

Preki at this point appears to be a step up from woy.

I cant say allardyce excites my man tits nor do i think he can bring us glory but someone had to be part of the transition and big sam appears to fit the bill. I can't see any top manager wanting to touch the gig so its probably slim pickins. I dont see why we need to rush to find someone though. Possble he could get the gig part time so that he can still manage Sunderland?

Was having a chat earlier about this. Though I wouldn't mind seeing Fat Sam in the England job, what's the rush? The next game ain't for two months I think?

It makes sense, this time for the FA to take their time, get a think tank together and interview as many candidates as they can. I believe they did this with both the Rugby and the Cricket? And we've improved greatly ever since.

If there was ever a time for the FA to not rush and to fook it all up again it's now. Even if someone like Southgate took charge of the next game...it don't matter.

It makes sense to be cautious, to REALLY think about all the various permutations around what is wrong with the whole International set up and to ensure as much as possible that this time, we get it right.

I think fat sam would do a good job because England will play like clubs do in the premiership. Lots of energy and pace as opposed to the slow continental style that Woy played. Do I think the FA executives will choose him, no I don't. They are like Spurs fans obsessed with possession and passing stats. I think they'll wait a year and appoint Wenger if he really wants the job.

Will be interesting to know what the FA's expectations are.

Probably semis in upcoming tournaments.

Take the squad to Thailand - that'll do it.

I think the FA (who appoints the people at the FA? Can they get sacked) need to look at a long term plan and appoint appropriately.

They need to look at grass roots football, how we are going to develop the next generation of players and get them playing at the top level and not languishing in Premier League reserves. They need to address the lack of development at all ages. How does the England manager come into it, they need a manager that brings back some belief and pride in representing the country. Create a good team spirit, give players a chance regardless of which club they play for and play them in a way that suits their strengths and not exposes their flaws so they come back better players and not bereft of confidence.

It doesn't really matter about formations and even results, what matters is that when you watch the three lions you feel pride and that it is the pinnacle of your career not a distraction from your club football, Iceland, Wales, NI have all shown that you don't need to win trophies to inspire your nation, you just need to go out and play with pride and you will be cheered in defeat if fans feel you gave it everything.

In that respect it really should be an English man, whether it is Big Sam, Bruce or even Pards or Redknapp it doesn't matter they should have one remit and that is getting the players to play with pride and if they can't bring themselves to do that you drop them. I would rather see a Bournemouth player giving his all in an England shirt than a Man United player that can't be arsed.

You think Joe Hart kept his place in the team because Head and Shoulders demanded it? Is that why Vardy got in the squad because he'd had a bag of crisps named after him?

As a bloke, I like Steve Bruce. Honest, humble, genuine and fair. But Manager of England? I'm not so sure. He can't do any worse than Hodgson I suppose and I like what he says about keeping the players grounded and not pampering them. He's old skool and won't take any shit, so could be a decent appointment. Tactically I don't think he's up there, but I'm sure he'll work his nuts off. Good luck to him if he gets it.

As England have hit rock bottom, and clearly the FA's main concern is money, I don't see why they shouldn't sell the manager post to the highest bidder. I'm sure there's a couple dozen saudi sheikhs who would gladly pay 10m or more to let their son be England manager for a year as part of their Super Sweet Sixteen birthday party.

Results wouldn't be worse, and we'd be turning our biggest expense into our biggest earner.
