Strokes Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 genuinely wouldn't care if we finished 17th on gd next year if we gave europe & the cups a good go. Agreed, we've completed the league thing now. Let's play a new game.
Webbo Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 As long as we do better than Chelsea last season I'll be happy.
halfpipe Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 Top half is fine with me. Champions League should be the priority IMO, we get a shot at the league and domestic competitions every year, playing Champions League football is special.
Bluetintedspecs Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 I understand the sentiment and reasoning behind the thread Manwell, however, it terrifies me due to the mentality of some of our fans. I hope for another big season but as others have stated keeping N'golo and Riyad is massive.
EverybodyDannsNow Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 Top 8 and progression from the Champions League group stage would be a good season. However, if we keep Kante and Mahrez then I see no reason why we can't finish in the top 4 again.
Sharpe's Fox Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 Top half is great. Just hope we have a fist at the cups.
Guest Col city fan Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 genuinely wouldn't care if we finished 17th on gd next year if we gave europe & the cups a good go. I'd be bothered, personally. To go from top to 17th would be disappointing. Off the cuff, id take a good cup run (in any of them) and about 10th ish. I'd be disappointed if we just avoided relegation. That would show we'd gone backwards when we need to consolidate our massive gains.

I'd be disappointed if we just avoided relegation. That would show we'd gone backwards when we need to consolidate our massive gains. Not necessarily. Leeds, who were the last "surprise" team to win the league back in '91, only just escaped relegation the following season, but after that established themselves as a consistent top 4 or 5 side. The overbearing expectations of their fans having become champions from nowhere undoubtedly played a big part in that and in many ways the struggling season which followed it up did a hell of a lot of good in the long-term in getting it out their system and I'm not sure they would've become a consistent top 4 or 5 side over the subsequent decade of the 90s/early 00s had they not had that struggling season and got all those over-the-top expectations out their system. I think it's a bit myopic to blanketly say it'll have shown we've gone backwards. It's an entirely different experience this season, we'll have expectations on us like we've never had before and likely never will again. We all know our fans - as I said, would it really surprise any of us at all if we started seeing some of our fans give a lot of backlash to some of our players if we're 14th or so in October? We've all seen how big expectations can turn into a toxic atmosphere at clubs like Newcastle and Blackburn and Villa who thought they were better than their mid-table or even 6th place finishes. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if we really struggled this season, but then had an excellent 2017-18, not because we'll have gone backwards this season, but because the expectations people set themselves were too high and a small spell of poor form quickly became a backlash and a toxic atmosphere.
murphy Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 Those saying we are established top four are deluded. Promotion followed by rock bottom followed by the great escape followed by the premiership title. We're not 'established' anywhere. Literally anything could happen next year but we won't get near the title again. That's why this season passed was so important, it was our one and only chance. Miracles don't happen every day, that's why they're called miracles.
Guest CityFan 06 Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 Good OP and also read through some very good replies there. I'm sure I read somewhere, Ranieri stated that a top ten finish is the club's aim. In my estimations, I'd consider a top ten finish to be another good step in the right direction as a club. Also, to be in or around European places would be even more excellent. As a result, if we establish ourselves with another positive campaign in the top flight next season, we can then look forward in anticipation of the near future. Hopefully in the coming years we will see a bigger stadium, a bigger fanbase and even more bigger ambitions for the club to progress as a whole. It's not the fact we're not a top/big club now, but being a 'top club' consistently will give us a reputation amongst football and in ourselves of being a real class club at the top level of English football. I'd like to see us winners of the FA Community Shield, and to be winners of the FA Cup/League Cup or a competition similar of that kind. Even being in the final or advanced stages of such competitions is a success IMO. To also see us do well in the Champions League, our first time in the tournament, would be pleasing. I wouldn't and couldn't write us of winning the PL again though.
biggs Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 I expect to be in tge battle for top spot. We definately have the team quality to defend our title.....champions League - final 8 or better
StriderHiryu Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 The head says normality returns to the league with Man City, Man Utd and Chelsea all returning to form. We have a good season but finish in the top 10 as Kante, Mahrez and maybe even Vardy move on at the end of the season. No one lets us down and we are a very respectable force. The heart says the confidence from the title win makes the players raise their game again! The back 5 mean machine complimented with strength in depth in attacking options adds an extra dimension. We conquer Europe with a clinical counter-attacking display to ensure Jamie Vardy's movie gets a sequel and the league looks back at our 2015/2016 win as the start of a new era!
filbertstreet Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 I'd sort of like us to do a bit shit so it's easier to get tickets again
Trav Le Bleu Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 Whatever our expectations, and for the record, I'd be happy withstanding up, but believe we can challenge at the top again, one thing is sure. Claudio is the master of managing expectations. So I'm not worried.

NewEnglandFox Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 European qualification. Outside the top 7 with a trophy would be fine. Or inside the top 7 without. Inside the top 7 with a trophy would also be awesome. But I'd rather fate be in our hands on FA cup final day.
kingfox Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 The league will definitely be more difficult next season, Chelsea, Man Utd and maybe Liverpool could definitely be there or thereabouts, along with Man City, Arsenal & Spurs to. If we manage to keep our best players then top six is very possible, if we lose Kante then I can see us finishing top 10 but not top 6, almost impossible to replace him, if he does leave I think we'd need to get someone in who has played champions league football before and has more experience. Next season I think it will be Man City, Chelsea & Man Utd possibly being the top three then Arsenal, Liverpool & Spurs behind them, if we can compete with those three teams in particular then top six is highly likely, if not then I can see us competing with the likes of Everton, West Ham and maybe Southampton to finish between 7th and 10th.
potter3 Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 I want to get out of the Champs League group, 1st, 2nd or 3rd I don't care. I'd like to challenge for Europa League spots in the league but I can see us finishing bottom half just as easily.
Poznan34 Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 Top 8 and progression from the Champions League group stage would be a good season. However, if we keep Kante and Mahrez then I see no reason why we can't finish in the top 4 again. Pretty much this, and I think it's not unrealistic. We are pot 1 for the CL. Keeping Kante is key.
Guest CityFan 06 Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 FA Cup is one of the trophies I'd love to see us win. Finalists four times is impressive, but to see our name as the 'winners 2016' of the cup would be magnificent. League Cup win or something similar would be equally as good though.
Guest Col city fan Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 Don't be surprised to see Everton make big strides this year either. They HAVE got some very good players and a superb manager now. Can see them in the top ten.
FireFox Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 People expecting only top 10 when we won the league by 10 points...

I'd love to see us lift the FA cup. To us 'oldies' it still matters.
fazzyfox Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 I think there will be a clear top 8 develop of Us, Man City, Man Utd, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, Liverpool and West Ham with Everton and Southampton just behind. Really not sure which order those 8 will end up in but unlike the days of a top 4 or five all 8 could beat each other which potentially means a lower points total would be required and "just" avoiding any drops in confidence following a defeat or silly runs of form could see us right in the mix throughout the season. Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd and Chelsea will all be better than last season, West Ham and Tottenham could be slightly better too but at present we look like we'll also be significantly better. Even with a broader squad I wonder if we'll really go for the F.A. Cup and it could be that the clubs with the least European and domestic cup games will last the course better (shopkeeper I need to return my Tottenham, the wheels appear to have come off). So an unpredictable season with top clubs nicking points off each other, we don't have the London derbies where current form can give way to thud and blunder / blood and thunder outcomes but our matches will be that extra bit special with everyone respectful and wary of us. If they get their acts together five or six clubs could well finish above us but only if we lose a number of games so a steady neck and neck first three quarters of a season followed by a bonkers sprint for the line where anything could happen. First, second or sixth!
