whoareyaaa Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 Not sure if this has been discussed yet but this does really irritate me and now we have a brought in Hernadez I'm sure we will be seeing a lot more of these long throws into the box. what I'm struggling to understand is 99% of the time last season Fusch longs throws lead to sweet **** all and almost instantly we give the opposition the ball back, again when Hernadez has featured pre season, long throw goes in and opposition have possession again. not only that but we don't have many big players with huth and Ulloa being the expection. now with so many attacking, techincal and flair players in our ranks surely the best option would be a quick throw to the feet and off we go instead of getting everyone forward launching one into the box and then the keeper collecting it. just really pisses me of its not ****ing rugby!! Discuss...
BrummieFOX Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 Guarantee they'll amount to more than our corners. But as soon as we play a short corner...GROAN!
indierich06 Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 Tbf, Hernandez looks a lot more effective at them than Fuchs. Actually looked like they might be dangerous with him.
Sol thewall Bamba Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 Trying to understand why we take long throw ins but short corners.
stevelcfc Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 Keep mixing it up a bit, if Ulloa, Huth, Morgan etc. are in the box then why not hurl it in? Extra string and all that.
whoareyaaa Posted 9 August 2016 Author Posted 9 August 2016 I understand if we had a load of big players but we are probably one of the smallest teams in the division in terms of height and not to mention physical strength.
Captain... Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 If defenders see it is a threat then they will look to combat it so when we have a long throw opportunity they will get everyone back in the box and we will have more space around the box. Against United we did throw Huth up there for the long throw, but defences are that well organised these days that set pieces are going to be tough to score from regardless if it is a long throw or corner. We get most of our joy when defences aren't set so I whilst don't mind the long throw as an option we should be looking to move the ball quickly when we are up the pitch and not slow it down waiting for Hernandez/Fuchs every time. If there is no quick throw opportunity then we can try and long throw, just needs one lucky bounce and we have a goal.
Webbo Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 What I like about the long throw is even if the defender heads the ball there's not enough pace on the ball to get any distance on the clearance. Shouldn't be used every time but it can be a useful weapon.
RedSoxUK Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 Yeah we don't and won't often win that first ball, but it's the second ball that counts from a long throw, especially as the ball is being driven in to an uncomfortable position. We would not want to be on the recieving end of it, it's an asset and we should use it.
Jimmy Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 we take short corners because virtually none of our players can beat the first man when taking a corner, I wonder if they actually work on the throws though as there doesn't really seem to be a plan
StanSP Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 If you're gonna do long throw-ins, you can't just hurl it in to the box and hope for the best. When Stoke did it and were notorious for it, it's cos they had people in the right positions and it was thrown with some strategy behind it. So whether it's Hernandez or Fuchs from the right or the left, they need to be accurate with their throws. If we want to get a flick on somewhere, we have Huth or Morgan at the front post. If we want to launch it very long, we have them both around penalty spot or towards the back of the 6-yard box to win the header to send it back across goal. Ideally we'd have Okazaki and Vardy collecting these flick-ons or knock-downs and at least threaten them and not get pulled up for obstructing/fouling the keeper (most of the time it's not a foul I know). Then you have King/Drinkwater/Mendy around the edge of the box to pick up any shit clearances/2nd balls. It won't work all the time. It might not work some of the time which is why we need to mix it up and not try it every time. Nothing wrong with variety but nothing wrong with trying it in a match. We need to have the awareness to realise if it's not working in a match, then we switch it up and try something different.
promised land Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 What pisses me off is when someone starts a thread, then types discuss at the end. If people want to reply they will, they don't need telling to do so.

I remember saying the exact same thing to my mate whilst watching the ICC (can't remember which game) but he put some good balls in.
Guest Sharpe's Fox Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 Yes we never scored from a long throw last season but they're better than a Danny Simpson short one to Okazaki or Mahrez where the ball is turned over immediately. I wouldn't turn your nose up at it.
ARM1968 Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 Long throw is just another weapon, blunt unless honed. All set pieces should be practised as teams good at it can get an extra 5-10 goals across a season from them. My concern is that we don't look as practised at any of them as we might.
Guest Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 Fuchs and hernandez either throw for Huth's head or to the striker standing near the goal line for him to play it in from a great angle. Even if the opposition head the ball the chances are it comes out to our midfielders on the edge of the box. It's much better than our short throw which is always passed back to the person who throws it in. Which in itself is better than before when we always used to give the ball away at throw ins.
Soar Fox Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 Stoke were effective from the long throw because Delap could throw it in flat with plenty of pace on it. Hernandez just throws it long & high which makes it easier for defenders to defend.
Len Finsbury Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 Surely it's better to have it than not to? The long throw is another option. Just because you have it, doesn't mean you have to employ it every time. Fuchs didn't all the time last year.

I'm not saying that we should abandon the long throw all together I just think we are wasting a lot of energy trying it on almost every occasion.
ScouseFox Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 it was well exciting in the last 5 mins on sunday. way better than throwing it back to morgan and letting him boot it or some shit
