Steven Gerrard in talks over MK Dons managerial role

Recommended Posts

Seems like a decent enough fit to me. If Gerrard has aspirations to go straight into management as a no. 1 then there's worse places than MK Dons for him to start his managerial career. MK Dons have good facilities, an excellent stadium and a big catchment area so there's plenty of potential if a big name like Gerrard took over. At least he'd be starting in the third tier to learn his trade rather than thinking he can walk straight into a big club and be a success like Gary Neville did.

Play/coach for the last 6 months at Liverpool. Win title. Leave as an absolute hero.

Join ANYONE but MK Dons as manager in the summer.

Sorted.

Leave Los Angeles to go live in Milton Keynes. Absolutely bonkers what is wrong with him

Plenty of pretty, rural, expensive and exclusive villages around MK you know. I doubt he'd live in the town centre. If his playing days are over and he wants to be a manager back in England, then I can see the attraction.

He's already a hero at Liverpool and wouldn't get in their side now I don't reckon.

Maybe he doesn't want to be a coach/assistant/number 2 and only wants to be a manager in his own right?

I hate everything about MK franchise as a set up, but it's probably one of the best options if he wants to start managing in the lower leagues. If he's successful, learns his trade and makes a name for himself over the next few years, he may even end up as Liverpool manager himself one day...

I've seen so many negative reactions to this, typical English reactions. We'll complain that there's no decent English managers but then turn our noses up when a person like Gerrard not only goes into managment, but goes to somewhere where he'll be given the chance to develop as a manager.

No way Klopp will want him anywhere near their first team at the moment, casts too much of a shadow and he'll be well off the pace they play at now.

He is bound to slip up

I'll be glad to be proved wrong, but I really can't see him making a good manager.

I can't imagine him having the patience or the personal or motivational skills.

A captain can get away without those qualities if he leads by example, but a manager can't do that.

He always comes across as a rather impatient, depressive character.

He obviously has a lot of knowledge but I can't imagine him motivating or relating to a range of personalities, inspiring them with positivity (or even scaring them to success).

It's all about the team he surrounds himself with, he'll need experienced coaches with lower league experience, Stevie G has no grasp of football at that level.

He'll probably do a Neville, think they can muster it easy no problem struggle at the task in hand then return to punditry.

Return to a job he's not done?

He had done some Champions League coverage during last season.

The arrogance of English footballers when it comes to managing and coaching is terrible, Lampard said this week that he shouldn't have to do a coaching course with people who only coach kids because he's got 50 caps. Being a good players has virtually nothing to do with being a good manager or coach, so for people like Giggs, Gerrard (less so) and Lampard to think they can waltz into top jobs without first completing all of their coaching badges and having experience in the lower leagues is annoying.

I think Jenas said similar too, he was bemoaning the lack of jobs for English managers after saying ex-pros should be fast-tracked whilst he's sat on the sofa being a pundit.

If this comes off, I'm gonna praise Gerrard for having the sense to start low with a view to building up. Opposite to Gary Neville of course.....

Gerrard has always come across as Mr Cool off the field.Though why he'd wanna leave LA to go to Milton Keynes is bewildering....

MK dons have proven to be a good place for young English managers to cut their teeth. Although few have succeeded long term, most have had good opportunities upon leaving.

Can anyone remember a big name player starting their managerial career at a smaller club and actually making it as a manager though? They either seem to start at big clubs and stay at big clubs, or start at small clubs and fizzle out.

Fair play to him for giving it a go, it's  not like he needs the money. He's quiet in front of the media but he may well be a lot more inspiring when he's on the training pitch.

Karl Robinson has done really well out of managing there despite being a shit manager and a fraud, gets linked to loads of jobs without having done very well in his career.

if he has done his coaching badges then fine, just because he was an international footballer does not mean he will be good at management. he has a lot of experience playing football and being captain which will help but he needs to be able to make the tough decisions and being able to upset people.

After that slip a couple of years ago, I imagine Gerrard knows exactly how to upset a hell of a lot of people lol

Yeah lets not act like Gerrard would turn down the opportunity to manage Valencia.
