Who can replace the irreplaceable?

Firstly, its great to see that the club have announced that the Birch is doing well in hospital, but it got me thinking, He cant go on forever.

So who could possibly replace him on matchdays once he decides enough is enough? - Although i think he will never retire.

Would you want another Ex player taking control of his matchday duties? I know Ian Marshall has been doing a lot of PR stuff in the corporate areas on matchdays but i can't see him having the same appeal (or charisma) as Birchenall.

EDIT: I hope this doesn't come across as disrespectful, given what's just happened to him. But eventually the club (and fans) will have to make arrangements when the inevitable happens.

It's more than just match days though.  Yes he's been paid well to do it over the years, and I've been quite open about not being his biggest fan. But he does a lot behind the scenes as well for fans and relatives of fans, the charity work, the tours and other things.

If he ever decided to call it a day (it's entirely his decision), then it would be difficult for someone to replace all of that, even if they are being paid to do so. Yes you can get someone to stand there and represent the club, but it wouldn't be the same for people. It would take a long time to build up that sort of good will many people have towards him.

Oh i know. I think Emile Heskey and Muzzy Izzet are club ambassadors too aren't they?

But as you said, for the matchday stuff it will need someone who already has a good rapport with the fans.

I'm not sure there could be a replacement for my generation. He's been a part of my life ever since I started following Leicester. Anyone else would just be a hollow facsimile. It might be that my children (when I have them) could have another Birch figure...I never could.

I would imagine that the club would go with someone milquetoast and 'safe'.

The Birch was brilliant during the O'Neill years. The half time stuff used to be something to look forward to, until he got one too many wraps on the knuckles from the FA. :D

He's got the knack for entertainment. A good comedian is someone who can take the piss without the recipient having a clue and Birch is a world expert at it.

Steve Walsh is the natural choice he is a bona fide leicester legend and a god to those who used to watch him on the terraces. He also lives local and has lots of contacts in the media etc.

Shame he is a bit unlikable in the flesh with limited charm and charaisma.

Shame he is a bit of an unlikable nob in the flesh with limited charm and charisma.

The natural choice is an unlikable nob with no charm or charisma...?

He's meant to talk at half time, no go off queuing for a pie.
