Guest CityFan 06 Posted 1 April 2017 Posted 1 April 2017 Yes, it keeps coming to me and I do wish we could've replicated this sort of form and performance levels earlier on in the season. This season was a big opportunity to push on with a top half/ten finish. We'd be around the positions of 12-8th I'd say, if we performed like this since the start of the season.

Considering 9th is only one win away from our position now I think your under selling it somewhat. Personally I think we'd of been good for another 15 points or so than we are on right now. My guess is we'd have been above West Brom and scrapping it out with Everton and Arsenal for 6th.
Guest Danny Clender Posted 1 April 2017 Posted 1 April 2017 My algorithm says, we're exactly as planned. Champions League quarter finalists and surviving in the Prem.
Harry - LCFC Posted 1 April 2017 Posted 1 April 2017 It's fair to say we're playing 'above the average' right now, with this manager and this team selection we wouldn't be able to replicate these sort of performances all the time. I'd still suggest we'd be the best of 'the rest' i.e. above West Brom at the least. In a way I'm not that bothered though. Being in the CL quarter finals is a unique opportunity and I'm delighted we're approaching it in such good form.

Id agree with this, in the sense that the form we are in now is the best form we could possibly be in, rather than the form we could show over an extended period. Theres no reason we couldnt be 7th i dont think. The top 6 are better than us id say but there are small margins between the mid table teams and no reason we couldnt be 7th.

Cos we have leap frogged West Ham and Burnley, and we're only 3 points behind Stoke. I think we are, six points is not insurmountable and we could still lose a couple on the bounce. We have dragged others into it with our run (and Palace's too). Burnley and West Ham looked comfortable before we played Liverpool, Southampton too and we are ahead of two and one point behind the other.
murphy Posted 1 April 2017 Posted 1 April 2017 Lets just be grateful that we have dragged ourselves out of the mire. I honestly thought we were down after Swansea.
Izzy Posted 1 April 2017 Posted 1 April 2017 At the start of the season, I predicted we'd finish 8th. Even when we were shit, I still thought we'd finish 8th. Now we're good again, I still think we'll finish 8th. I wonder what odds I'd have got on us finishing 8th? If we finish 8th, I'll be gutted I didn't have a bet on it. We'll finish 8th won't we..
smr Posted 1 April 2017 Posted 1 April 2017 Did you hear me and my old man when we walked out the ground today? I said the same question to him and he replied "top 6 maybe" heh
brucey Posted 2 April 2017 Posted 2 April 2017 We couldn't have possibly played with this 'form' since the beginning of the season though. - Inevitable post title hangover - No Ndidi/Gueye - Vardy's and Drinky's 3 match suspensions - Kasper breaking hand - CL distractions and rotations The current form alone, without those factors would have us top 4 I think. If the above factors were taken into account I would say 6th-7th

This is the more important question. Looking forward to what we can do next year rather than what could have been this one. I think with the new direction of going back to what we know and are good at and adding better talent to fit the team we should be challenging again for Europe.
worthosoriginals Posted 2 April 2017 Posted 2 April 2017 Just above Chelsea, with spurs doomed to a 3rd place once more.

Assuning we stay up, which looks likely now, this season will surely go down as a memorable one due to the Champions League. The way we have been playing gives me a lot of confidence that next season could be a banger.
lestajigs Posted 2 April 2017 Posted 2 April 2017 Tbf,other then Liverpool who were shocking, we have had an easy run of games, be interesting see were we are after 5 games after Sunderland
SheppyFox Posted 2 April 2017 Posted 2 April 2017 6th I think Europa League finish, we will finish 9th-12th I think now, hopefully

Being in the CL quarter finals is a unique opportunity and I'm delighted we're approaching it in such good form. Why couldn't it, after all it was this team that won the league at a canter last year. Claudio messed around with the winning formula. Shakey is just going back to basics and getting us to play to our strengths. We're never going to be a possesion based team, which Claudio tried to make us. We play at our best when we press high with a siege mentality. Shakey has reinstated the freedom and confidence. If that had been there all season, than I genuinely believe we would be challenging within the top 6 for sure. If we can keep our top players and have a manager who believes in our type of football, then next season will be another good one.
HighPeakFox Posted 2 April 2017 Posted 2 April 2017 I've felt for a while that next season will be one to enjoy. I'm still baffled as to what happened until the sacking - why change what worked?

I don't think he wanted us to continue to be the underdog with the siege mentality, he wanted us to be like an Arsenal with possesion based football. We don't have the correct players to play the style of football he wanted. But we do have the correct skill set, mentality and stamina to play 'our' way. Shakey has just reinstated that freedom to play. Possesion based football is old hat now, more and more teams are setting up to counter with pace and press high. It's the new trend. It will be interesting to see what happens if all teams go that way. Maybe possesion based will come back to counter the counter :)?

Sunderland is another home game. It's been a fairly favourable run of games. After Tuesday we have 4 consecutive away games to Everton, Palace, Arsenal and WBA. That's when we will see how good we actually are.

If the papers are to be believed then Vardy is off so is Mahrez and Kasper, but then again they said that last year and I'm hoping now for a decent top 10 finish but hell yeah we played all season like this we could have been in champions league place again !! But then we still could be if we continue our great run and go onto win the Champions League? Damn you @Mease for making me dream of what would have been we could have been !!

I guess evolving a team into that takes a very long time, and a long time no longer exists for a manager I think. I think the way our boys play is a thrilling watch, as well as effective. I do wonder how well the team would work without Vardy, because he is a very particular sort of player, with a very idiosyncratic set of skills and strengths.

We would have needed a completely different midfield and defence to play the Claudio way as well. It reminds me a lot of when Sousa took charge, tried to play a game our players weren't moulded to. I think there are plenty of Vardy esque players out there. The chap who plays for Athletico is pretty close. Will be interesting to see how we deal with that threat. I think Defoe in his younger days was also very similar. Like you say, it'll be interesting to see how we build on this squad in the future.
