Sheffield Utd Post Match Thread 4-1

Slimani was absolute top draw last night. Should've had a hat-trick after N'Didi was wrongly ruled offside. Did everything you'd expect from your centre forward and always found himself in the right positions. Gray was fantastic too, I just wish he could show that type of performance all the time. Was also impressed with Amartey. Didn't set the world alight but he was very solid, looked to support the attack when he could.

Lots of positives for me:

Musa- fantastic effort throughout and got his reward

Slimani- getting two good goals

Gray- goal and assist

Knight- fantastic block at 3-1, looks a natural defending chucking himself at that.

King- always seemed to be on the ball last night

Mendy- got 15 minutes in, looked slimmer and hopefully when fit another option for midfield, I still think there's a player in there

Overall- was impressed with how we killed the game with 3 relatively quick goals, glad we didn't sit back after getting the first

Negatives-

Ulloa- slows the play down far to much at times.

Maguire- had ice strapped to knee at end hope it's nothing to worry about.

Ahmed Musa needs to stop this desire he has to be a winger, he's not one. Certainly not in a conventional 4-4-2. I know he played wide left of a front 3 at CSKA but that's a different role to what a winger does in a 4-4-2 for us. He can't cross for a start, likely really can't cross. Even with no defenders there he'd struggle to put a decent delivery in to our attackers, they were a mixtures of shanks and snap hooks. Remarkable really.

What he is devastating at is running in behind defenders, which I think is what he will have done when he split the lines for CSKA. His finishing is erratic but you do that enough and you'll score goals.

Im not sure he has a future here as we've got Vardy, Iheanacho, Okazaki and hopefully Slimani all vying for a spot but I wish he'd be used as a striker if and when he does play.

I hope his goal doesn't convince anybody that Musa can actually play football.

Other than that not really anything worth saying.

Yes exactly, but a bit of confidence with the goal can't do any harm.

His running off the ball wasn't bad, the problems arise when the football gets involved in the equation which is a handicap when that's the name of the game.

Gray is a talent as some of us have said before.

Lets not forget it was Sheff Utd reserves, but a good win.

Think that's a great point about Slim not being an Okazaki replacement. Needs to be up top and in the box. Noticeably played in front of Vardy when he came on against Brighton but then we lose Vardy potency. For that reason suspect he'll be brought in when we play someone we'll struggle to break down.

Feed the Moose and he will (eventually) score!

Mods locking the match thread before the game ended was a bit trigger happy.

Great fun cup tie to watch though, very glad some of the fringe players got some mins and took their chance!

Slim was fantastic, Gray was good but still needs to work on his passing.  Papy coming back and having a little cameo was nice. King was very solid in the middle.  Harry showed his class, Chilly showed his promise.

Leo still lacking, sorry.  Hamer, how crap is Jakupovic?!

Just because they played Hamer, does not mean Jakupovic is crap, just giving Hamer a run.

Pleasing thing was the build up play quick and sharp and plenty of options for the player on the ball.

Chilwell looks good but may not be a goof full back

We should put in a decent bid for Brooks with an agreement to loan him back to Sheffield for the year/3 months. He looked good.

The thing which annoys me with Musa is that he's very, very quick yet has no confidence in his our ability to beat his defender with sheer pace. We saw glimpses when he first joined that he's rapid. In the first half, he continually looked to hit an early cross. Eventually he realised he's quicker that his opposite number and laid on a plate for Slim to hit wide.

Same with Gray at times. Don't over complicate it. Back yourself to be better than your opposite number, most of the time your natural pace will beat a defender again and again.

I think it is wrong that Slimani and Mendy have been put in the same category as Musa. Slimani has always impressed me and we haven't seen enough of Mendy to judge him. Musa, I've seen quite a bit of him and he just doesn't impress and can never see him doing it consistently in the Premier.

If Sky hadn't been blowing smoke up his arse I wouldn't have batted an eyelid.

He turned Chilwell, whom I rate very highly, inside out at least twice and he looked good going forward. I'd love to add him to our future young core of Maguire, Moore, Chilwell, Ndidi, Amartey, Gray, Lawrence, Iheanacho and whatever other u23s can make the step up - Choudhury, Barnes, Johnson and the lad from last night among the possibles.

Fair enough, to be honest I wasn't watching it that closely but none of their lot really stood out for me, especially going forward.

I also think we're being dismissive of Sheffield.

They are a champioonship team who had won their last 9 games at home - that's no easy feat for anyone. They were promoted easily as champs and are holding their own in the championship.

He created absolutely nothing - did he create a chance or have a decent shot saved? Beat a couple of players, once or twice but that was it. Baffling commentary

What I consider positive is that a lot of our fringe players have just a few, slight weaknesses that should be easy to improve.

Chilwell's defensive decision making, Musa's final ball, Amartey's aggression. They could be first teamers if they develop these areas. only concern is that they havent thus far.

They made seven changes.

Yes, and they were playing their reserves. They pretty much matched us in the first half. Not sure what people expect.

Slight weakness you say?

Aye - nine changes made with a combined price tag of at least £50 million whereas Sheffield United's combined paid transfer fees for that eleven would struggle to hit £3 million.

I'm sure that's why he scored against Mickey Mouse defences in Russia. He's bloody fast and probably ran between the lines, having lots of chances.

Law of averages dictates he's gotta score some of them.

His control was hopeless but his speed is great and when he hits a ball it stays hit which is why he misses look so bad. I've rarely seen a player who can generate so much power in the hit with so little back swing.

I'd still loan him out to Hull for a few months and let him find his footballing feet before I made a decision on whether to sell.

It was easy. We controlled the game. King bossed it from start to finish. They never really threatened us.

Think Ulloa should be offloaded, mind. Too slow. Dunno how/why he got a new contract.

Brilliant away day. Thought our end was superb. Enjoyed it.
